Emma Orbach is the real-life hobbit living off the grid in west Wales.
The 58-year-old has spent the last 13 years living with no electricity in a self-built roundhouse. Her daily chores involve tending to her vegetable plot and collecting fruit, tending to her three goats, seven chickens and two horses and chopping firewood.
She gets her drinking water from a nearby stream and only ventures to the shops for treats like rice and chocolate. Her evenings are spent in the glow of her stove, cooking her dinner and playing music on her Celtic harp.
She has this energy unlike any off-grid dweller I've seen so far. It's not suburban, or preppy, or privileged, it seems so calm, wise, experienced, and above all, very raw. She's probably been on this earth, more than once.
I could be off the grid but would need community. I would get lonely by myself.
Lol she lives on a commune with other like-minded villagers.

Ok then. I approve. Lol. I keep telling my SO that I want to move to Central or South America and have an orphanage and animal rescue in the middle of nowhere and grow organic vegetables. We'll see.
I want to see a day in the life full documentary of this women, she's amazing.

It's like I could feel the "peace" in which you live off the land/off the grid through your video...one day I plan to obtain the same "peace" :-)
My brother sent this too me because I lived off the grid for over 7 years in the 90's- 30 miles from the nearest town. I went to town once a month for supplies. I had chickens, goats and rabbits, canning veggies from my huge garden and wild edibles. My 'hut' was made out of beer and pop cans from the roadside ditches. A solar pump pumped water from a spring fed creek. In the last few years I had solar electricity. I absolutely LOVED it and miss it SO MUCH. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the right partner to share it with me. Living off the land is a lot of work, but it's peaceful and awesome.
Is it that great? I often wondered how I would cope being away from society that long, someone told me it might get boring and lonely, but IDK
if you are someone who can't live without the TV on or other distractions, then you would probably have a tough time. But, I don't watch TV, nor do I listen to music or radio much. I just love listening and communing with nature. You pretty much become a part of nature rather than just a spectator. It's an awesome experience.

The way the world is going, I really have a strong pull to do a stunt like this, just leave people, hang around goats and chicken, get back to a state where things make sense.

Love “simply” they said, is fun they said. I know this is more natural but in now way is simple or easy. It would be nice to try though to see if one is cut out for this lifestyle.

I would have to work out a way for a hot shower. I would miss my washer and dryer but I love her back to nature idea. I bet she saves a lot of money. One day she may not be capable of doing everything without help.

We did live like this. People were dying because of a cold or a flu because we had no proper medicine, everyone had to work hard all day to have enough food to survive, there was no time for kids to go to school because they had to help parents. Great time.
I wanna learn to live off grid before everything shuts down and everyone panics. Survival skills are important and I feel like we as a whole don't take that into consideration.
If you want to live like this, forget about any ideas of "we"

Good on you Lady, I don't believe people will be inspired though sadly by this, you have to do it for you, because that's what you want to do, not doing it for others, they will make their choices in life and live their choices. It was a nice thought of her to help raise mankind's appreciation of simplified living and the wonderfulness of all nature provides for us.

We have guy near us in West Perthshire, Scotland who lives in what we call a bender, a structure a bit like the real travelling folks of old lived in. If you're ever in this area, look out for a wee kilted man smelling of patchouli oil, with a shamanistic bodhran drum on his back. Listen to his songs, but beware the coffee... it may have a hint of mushrooms, lol.
She's right about happiness and peace, you know.

I'd like to live the same way.Here in NZ the cost of water, power, phone and land taxes is out of control and I work to give most of my money to corporate leeches and to provide them with luxury homes and cars. I would still have to pay land tax so would need an income of some sort but I get the impression that Emma lives on family land so is her lifestyle choice is subsidised by her family? Not criticising her but it would make it easier.
I love that more and more people are switching to simpler lifestyles like how it used to be. I hope to do the same when I get older.

I would like to try to live like this for a Summer. I always say maybe next year.
The shire was such a nice place to live because it had a local economy. This is the heart of a village. Villages declined when jobs went to the city. Rewatch The Hobbit and notice how busy the village is. Everybody knew their neighbors. Everyone knew what was expected of them. They knew 'the ropes,' what they could and couldn't get away with. Friendships spanned generations. This is what makes life simple. This is what gives an organic beauty that is so worthwhile. The natural instinct to keep up with your neighbors meant that you had to keep your place a certain way. "It's the done thing." and "It's not wrong to do it that way, but that's just not the way it's done around here." Are statements by which people come to know what the right thing to do is&was. They had certain traditions and they came together to celebrate. Celebrations are based on traditions but they really are just a celebration of life. Therefore, people can feel a very deep, abiding connection to a place, and the people in it. That's the good life.

She lives as were all supposed to,minimally!!! Take a lesson. Seems too many think big is better. Bigger means higher utility bills which takes energy away. Bigger means more room to fill such means on way to hoarding. Bigger means big head mentality. We don't need more, we just want it. Back in history we had all the space we needed. It was called earth.
