      +Daniel Kontor Hi daniel. Glad you liked my video. Not knowing much about GT i think that they will be able to damage even pine. You could consider even harder wood or to cast them in plastic (Polyurethane resin). that can really take some teeth without being damaged. Greetings from Peru!!! ...
    I watched some of your videos and I like them a lot... you are very creative, tidy and organized...congratulations for your work...I like to do my own lures as well, I found it as a very passionate hobby. Here, it is very rare to find an angler who do its own lures...
    Would you please tell me what was that liquid that you mixed with the epoxy in your danish version???. Also you talked about the hardness of the epoxy you use, would you please give me a little more of details of what are you using?
    Thanks in advance and have a safe fishing...Antonio

      Hi Antonio
      Thanks, i am happy that you like the video and that it has inspired you to do your own. I think that the hobby of doing your own fishing vary a lot from country to country. To me its is a hobby on its own.
      This liquid in the danish movie is alcohol, but i dont use that with the Envirorex epoxy as i seems to work fine without it.
      The full name of the EnviroTex epoxy is: "EnviroTex Lite Pour-On High Gloss Epoxy". You should be able to find that on the net.

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words. You can use almost any kind of wood. The advantage with balsa is that it is very light and easy to shape. If you havent tried, the look for shops that sell materials for model airplanes and ships. They use balsa for that. Otherwise pick any kind of wood thats available, and you will just have to adjust the amount of weight if you folow my plan. Good luck

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that there is an easier way than putting them in water and see how much they can carry. Especially with wood there are too many variables to make an useable formula. Even the same type of wod has different density, and with cutting and sanding the bait will have slightly different size each time

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannestornkvist2628 Not a stupid question at all. Yes it would be a good idea to seal the wood before you drop them in water. The wood won't be damaged, but will have to dry a while before you can paint it. Mayby you can find a varnis that dries a bit quicker than epoxy for that layer

  • @ChainsawSquirrel
    @ChainsawSquirrel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    using other wood such as white cedar, or other non sappy ( as in pine ) soft woods native to your region, would allow you to make a more neutral buoyancy bait "slow sink" without using a lot of weight that would reduce the action of those want to make that type of jerk bait.. just a thought :)

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm aware the harder and heavier wood would have some advantages, but also disadvantages. The bait would be much more durable and need less weight added. On the other hand they would be harder to shape, and with the balsa the posibility to place most of the lureweight very low in the bait, will make the bait very stable vertically. If you want your bait to have a lot of "bellyflash" the last would be a disadvantage. I guess in the end it depends on what bait you are making.

    • @ChainsawSquirrel

    When I made 3d eyes from the epoxy, I am using epoxy but after some time, it turns to pale and lose glossiness. What is the reason for this?. Using your advises, after hot stamping my jigs, I coated my jigs one layer of epoxy, now, I can apply zebra glow stripes easily, thanks by the way. Another question is about glow pigment paint, how can I spray this paint? What kind of binder must I use, am I use a thinner? There is no information about this in internet. And the last question, during buying epoxy what kind of epoxy we must select?

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Batuhan. There are many different qualities of epoxy, and they age differently. Try different ones to find one that stays the same over time. About glow pigment, I do not have much experience with that, but you should use something that is a very fine powder. Also make sure that you airbrush has a fairly large nozzle size - like 0,5 mm. I would mix it with some sort of clear coat. I buy my epoxy from Easy Composites in UK - Top quality i think. Good luck

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andres Moreno Hi Andres.
      You must have misplaced the weights somehow. The weights should always be bellow the middle of the lure. The closer to the bottom, the more stable the lure will bee. I like mine to be able to tilt a bit when I jerk, so the are placed a bit up. In your case they must be above the "floating center" of the lure, thus making it go belly up. If you are at the state where you put it in water, it is not easy to rearrange the weights. So I'm sad to say, that you'll probably have to start over. Good luck.

    • @andru6403
      @andru6403 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Splish Splash ... thanks a lot!, i'll try it again and i'll put the weights near of the bottom, and well i think i'm gonna start again with your templates, in my lures i use 4 lead balls with 3 gms each one, it's ok that weight?... i'll let you know how any news haha and of course i have to say that you're welcome to fish in the beatifull beaches of the venezuelan caribbean, regards!

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SplishSplashFishing

      Dylan Price Hi Dylan. Generally you need compressed air to use an airbrush. Normally this involves a compressor, but there are some airbrush sets that uses compressed air from a can. However in then long run, a small compressor is preferable, and you can get beginner sets that are not that expensive.

      Du kan godt bruge almindeligt træ, men det er noget sværere at forme, hvilket nok gør at det ikke er det letteste at starte med. Balsatræ kan man købe i hobbyforretninger, og det koster faktisk ikke det vilde.
      Super at du vil lave dine egne - Det er jo det det hele handler om

    How does these lures keep up when catching big pike? Balsa wood is quit soft, does the lure get easy damaged when the pike bite them?

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lures will take some damage along the way, but I usually just give them a drop of 5 min epoxy, and then they are ready again. The brown one on this picture has caught 50+ pikes and still lives on:
      scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/15039631_1341667742550581_5836728614612862383_o.jpg?oh=073523948bb5bcb341832edd1957a9f6&oe=58F2C6A2
      The brown and green on this picture is balsa, and the others are plastic (resin). If you want harder baits, you should consider making them in plastic. Start by watchng this movie:

      Alright, looking good! How much do your lures weight? I’ve build an example lure which was around 45 grams and it was floating when dropped one the water but dived when jerked. I use Sapiupira wood (little brother of mahogany) so for that lure I used around 10 grams of weight. The wood is quit hard.

      I casted those myself i a plaster mould, but I think you could even use a "wood mould". Place two pieces of fairly hard wook up against each other i a vice. Drill a 7 mm hole along the gathering. Leaving half a hole in each piece of wood. A mould like that will work for a few castings

    Hej - Fantastisk guide, efter et par års geddefiskeri nu er det vist tid til at lave mine egne jerkbaits og tailbaits, det eneste jeg mangler svar på er hvad træet hedder på dansk, også hvor man køber en air brush og hvordan den lige fungere? Har du evt. link? På forhånd tak for svar :)

      @SplishSplashFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ja da se at komme i gang - Det giver virkelig en fantastisk vinkel til dit fiskeri. Træet jeg bruger i denne film er balsa - Det kan man købe i mange modelfly forretninger. Bare søg på balsatræ eller balsa plade i google. Airbrush kommer i mange varianter lige fra de billige fra feks BilTema til de helt dyre. Jeg kan anbefale airbrushshop danmark, der har alt til airbrush og er super til levering og kundeservice. Der findes utrolig mange giudes til airbrush maling på youtube - prøv at se nogle forskellige, så får du en ide om hvordan det gøres

  • @caseyjtovey
    @caseyjtovey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is in regards to all of your lures. How do you determine how much weight to add to a lure to get it to float properly, suspend properly, or sink properly? I have tried several different equations, and cant seem to find a good equation to determine this. I have come close but not sure if the weight is going to fit.
    Here is my example:
    Lure weight - 15g
    Lure Volume - 30ml or 30cc
    equation weight divided by volume (15/30 =.50g/cc)
    the weight of water is 1g/cc
    so currently the lure weighs half as much as the water. so it will float. This means i will need 50g/cc of weight to make it neutrally buoyant. adding 50g of weight is WAY too much. This does not work. the weight required to make it float just at the surface is about 14.9g.
    I found this out by hanging a string with weights from the bottom of the lure.
    I want to know if you have a better way of doing this.
    Thanks again Paul!

    • @SplishSplashFishing
      @SplishSplashFishing  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +caseyjtovey Hi caseyjtovey
      I think You have got the formula wrong. You should not divide the weight with the volume.
      If you want a weightless lure in water, it should have the same weight as the volume of water it displaces. In your example it should weight 30 g like 30 ml of water. Total lureweight of less than 30 g will make it float - Like you discovered 15+14,9 = 29,9 is floating
