    Nixon was lucky that Ford saw merit in pardoning him. His aides still went to jail and honestly I do not see why Nixon should have been different. Kind of created a moral hazard for the future.

      You know, Richard Nixon actually committed an act of treason during the Vietnam War. While Nixon was running for President in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson wanted to begin new peace talks between the North and South to try to end the war within the next year or 2 (and some believe that this could have worked had Vice President Hubert Humphrey won in 1968). However, Nixon secretly contacted the leaders of both sides in Vietnam and basically told them to not make any deal with Johnson and wait until after the election, because if Nixon won he promised to provide both with a better deal which (unknown to the public at the time) was his "secret plan" as he called it. According to the U.S. Constitution, Treason (which is the ONLY crime fully defined within the document) is providing aid or comfort to an enemy that we are fighting during a time of war. And even when President Johnson called Nixon to confront him on this, Johnson knew Nixon was obviously lying when Nixon said that he wasn't preventing Johnson's new peace talks from happening, but Johnson couldn't do anything about it. So yeah, Richard Nixon committed an actual act of treason but the public didn't know about this potentially damaging piece of evidence that could hurt him as President and the United States when they had voted for him in 1968, and it's thanks to this action by Nixon that the Vietnam War lasted an additional 5 years and costs thousands more American lives.

    The worst thing that came out of Watergate wasn't the abuse of power or cover up, but the -gate suffix.
    I absolutely hate it.
    1) Not every scandal is on par with Watergate.
    2) It was called Watergate because of it's location, not because it had something to deal with water.
    The media loves the -gate for some reason, maybe it makes them feel nostalgic for a time when gumshoe reporters were on the beat doing hard work, or maybe it's just so they can hyperventilate and stir up outrage in the viewers to get better retention and ratings.

    • @chongjunxiang3002
      @chongjunxiang3002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      -gate suffix is likely continuous tradition of how to name English castle and fort. Imagine every castle hide its secret and treasure, while public and journalist act as trebuchet.

    I've often said if Richard Nixon had only served 1 term, he might have gone down as a decent President since he gave the United States universal kidney dialysis care (see John Oliver's segment on this) and the Environmental Protection Agency, which is surprising given that he was a Republican and I doubt any of them today would campaign on issues like these. Sure, he had a lot of issues as President, but the American public didn't find out about them until his 2nd term mostly thanks to Watergate.

    Another consequence of Watergate (at least indirectly) In 1987 President Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Bork, then a circuit court judge for a position on the Supreme Court. But the Democrats, lead by Senator Ted Kennedy, were so incense by the idea that they launched an aggressive and frankly personal attack and defeated the nomination. The episode gave us the verb "Bork/Borked/Borking" and, according to some, but especially conservative activists, is the start of the modern day politicization of the Supreme Court.
    Also, you raised the question as to whether or not Nixon would have been impeached had he had a network of conservative media to support him. That's funny because that is the same question former Nixon staffer and CEO of Fox News, Roger Allies, raised as well.

      Even if that contemporary history of impeachments where built on proven lies(Russiagate). He wrap it around and insinuated Nixon and Trump alike, but didn't clarify that Trump survived because Trumps voter base believed they were being manipulated by left wing media. They were right to not trust the corporate media and Nixon's case was actual real with tangible proof so good video with less than good ending but it was a nice attempt.

    I remember watching on the PBS TH-cam channel highlights of the Senate Watergate Hearings, specifically what the Chairman of the Committee, Sam Arvin said at the opening of Committee hearings:
    "(...) we are beginning these hearings today in an atmosphere of utmost gravity. The questions that have been raised in the wake of the June 17 break-in, strike at the very underguarding of our democracy. If the many aligations made to this date are true, then the burglars who broke into the Headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate were in effect breaking the home of every citizen of the United States. If these aligations prove to be true [then] what they were seeking to steal was not the jewels, money or other property of the American people, but something much more valuable, their most precious heritage, the right to vote in a free election,"

  • @colinnelson4080
    @colinnelson4080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I heard that the Watergate burglars were caught because of a piece of Scotch tape. The burglars used tape to hold the lock of the door they’d use to escape open. Apparently they foolishly placed the tape sideways so it stuck out the door. The building’s janitor saw the tape and pulled it out. Later, the burglars replaced the tape but didn’t change the alignment. The Janitor returned to see the new tape in a building supposedly empty and thus called the police.
