@@JohnDRuddyMannyMan its a really good idea, also maybe something about how the Romans never fully invaded Ireland, (although looked like they were going to colonise it at one point, possibly explaining why the Roman city of Chester was so big to prepare for the invasion). However one key point to think about with the supposed 'english' invasion of Ireland is that it wasn't anything of the kind. It was a Norman invasion, as England itself was invaded and conquered by the Normans in 1066. When the Irish invasion is going on over 90% of the country was owned by Norman French, and the English themselves were slaves in their own country. Northern England had closer ties to Ireland than the South as they were both Viking colonies.
IRA commited various massacres of civillians, most infamous being the Kingsmill massacre. During the troubles the IRA murdered more Irish civillians than the British Army.

And we've come full circle with Brexit. There's still healing wounds over The Troubles and now we might see a hard border in Ireland. The short sighted thoughts of that initial vote might stir up yet another bloody moment.... but at least England will get control of the sinking ship away from the EU.... even though the UK voted around 98% of the time with EU laws passed.
The UK made the right decision. “Brexit” will be a success. It will take a while due to the current climate but we will get there. The border is a problem because the EU is making it a problem. The sooner the people in Ireland realise that the better. I believe the RoI will also leave the EU.

I'm English and like most English people now we are different people to those who fought and colonised Ireland. We're sorry about the past and what happened.. or at least I am. At the same time, most people on both sides want to move forward in a democratic way. Ultimately, Ireland and the UK are similar. We both like to drink a lot, we have similar outlooks and respect freedom of speech and all that stuff, so we'll always be friends I hope. Brexit has complicated things and is one of the reasons I voted to remain. The peace in Northern Ireland is too important to risk damaging, sad to see so many British people not realising that. Peace and love to my Irish cousins and friends, we aren't enemies, regardless of what our governments did or said in the past.

@@hedgehog3180 No while the atrocities committed were terrible( more so on the British side, though the IRA did do things like killing soldiers who surrendered and POWs also). We definitely started the war of independence(justifiably so IMO).
The Conquest of Ireland arguably wasn’t fully completed until the Act of Union in 1800 when the Kingdom of Ireland (after centuries of constitutional and regime changes) was forcibly merged into the British state (though our civil service and courts remained separate, and we retained our legislative representatives). Those representatives forced to sit in London instead of Dublin, but went back to Ireland in 1919 and declared independence in a reconstituted Irish Parliament (copying the Hungarian walkout of the Austrian parliament in the 1860s). My dad was involved in the Irish War of Independence *in the 1990’s,* fighting for the british side. He was against the entire thing, including his entire platoon, but had to fight anyway because of orders. During this war a song called “Zombies” by the Cranberries was being played everywhere in Ireland, from bars to the radio (where he would have been in danger if he went to them). What’s ironic is that everyone in my dad’s platoon, including himself, would be playing this song every single day wanting the war to stop. There’s also another less popular song about this war where a British man blows himself up in order to save Irish prisoners; however they just laughed at him for doing such a thing. Unfortunately I forget who wrote that song.
I served in NI in the 70's. I've never heard of the War of Independence in the 1990's. However, I have heard of "The Troubles". Don't inflate. It's not helpful.
@ Defending their homeland? Didn't know that the tans were 100 percent Irish but you learn something new every day. As for the ira targeting women and children, did you not watch the video? The notion that Scottish independence would be at all beneficial is incredibly stupid, you rely on the union and England for food, money, defence, water, infrastructure. Basically some of the most basic things required for a state to survive. Not to mention. Independence? Why? What has the modern UK government done to hurt you, other than enable you to live in a cushy first-world country? Independence movements like Scotland's and Cornwall's are an insult to Tibet, Palestine etc. There is a complete lack of justification. We need to stay united, especially when it seems like Europe is diving head first into the shitter, with the UK at the spearhead. All one for one, and one for all, united we stand, divided we fall. England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland all share a language, culture, political system, army, industry, electricity grid, but let's not forget, wires and words aren't the only thing that connect us too. We're all British.
And stop pretending that you’re oppressed by the English, you weren’t oppressed you were the oppressors, the Northern Ireland colonists were mostly Scottish.

Having been in Northern Ireland in 1990, to visit family in Derry, I learned very quickly how scary the Para 1's were. My grandfather fought them when he was young. He also fought for the U.S. in the Pacific, during WW2. He was in his 40's by then. I lean towards Michael Collins, cause that is how I was taught.
Not as scary as IRA death squads
Claudy, Kingsmills, La Mon, Bloody Friday...
I would stipulate that the death squads of the UVF and UDF were just as terrifying.

Really love these videos. Do you think you'll do videos about the medieval conflicts between England and Ireland?

Well if worst comes to worst then at least well get another go at the ira
Brexit will bite the UK in the butt.

Well said!

Robbie Johannson Maybe tell that to the British who were burning down cities and comitting mass murders left right and center. The Irish didn't have a choice in this matter did they? It was either fight back or be murdered by the British who were never going to give them independence.

Why did he join the army then?
Seán Mac Uaitéir He was a high school dropoff that was literally forced to join the army by his father.
He didn't blow himself up, he threw himself on an IRA bomb.
