Do you prefer console gaming? Or Mobile Gaming? On a brighter note - I tested the most Viral TikTok Gadgets and it was every bit as delightful as you'd expect: th-cam.com/video/h359LRmMZMU/w-d-xo.html
In the era of Gameloft we used to have standalone single player campaigns with great great graphics. Be it novas or popular racing games to ubisoft titles like assassins creed to avater they were simply mind-blowing. 2012-14 was golden. Now Gameloft doesn't make any of those single player games with 0 online crap. And not sure if the contract that expired or something, the whole old library of games just disappeared into nothing
I hear you there. I remember loving modern combat 4 and very much looking forward to modern combat 5. When 5 came along it had all these energy systems and online nonsense and there was no way to simply enjoy the single player campaign. I checked recently and modern combat 4 is no longer on the play store. I miss the 2011 to 2014 glory days too.
@SupremeCalamitas1 no? Comments are meant to be a discussion. Just because a few delusional teens use them as their dopamine fix doesn't mean that's what they're for
The only problem for me on games right now is that it is not the same as before, i feel like some developers just gets greedy and they don't focus on the gameplay of the players, especially right now the games are full and full of ads to the point that you can't even play anymore. Weird games keeps on getting released, some has potential but its sometimes literally just unplayable.
Main reason was old good games in 32bit now smartphones are build 64 but due to compatibility issues so not working if companies fix this issues all of games still works in new phones but companies can't do bcoz there is no income so og games gone forever if u want to play use old phone is best choice
Cellphone java games were total top tier for me. It was the time of handheld gameboys, so mobile games devs tried to keep up with the level of entertainment. These werent much about graphics but purely about playability. And the use of HW buttons helped a lot. Java mobiles like Sony Ericsson k700i were so popular at my region that every kid had to had some. Titles like prince of persia, splinter cell, gravity defied, magnetic joe, playman series, worms, medal of honor, burnout, asphalt were extremely well put together.
Ahh, did you hit right in the nostalgia with that that comment - 2005-2010, the golden age of mobile gaming :) I undug my old K770i only to find almost all the games you've mentioned still installed on it. At the time, Gameloft made a mobile Java version of almost every popular game - if they didnt struck a deal with a studio to make a mobile port of their games (like they did with Ubisoft), they made a mobile counterpart of the entire franchise, and since there was no online functionality to speak of, they actually had to put in effort to for people to buy them. Some examples off the top of my head: -Need for Speed -> Asphalt -GTA -> Gangstar -FIFA -> Real Football -Tekken/Mortal Kombat -> Medieval Combat -The Sims -> Miami/New York Nights -Rock Band/Guitar Hero -> Guitar Rock Tour -Super Monkey Ball -> Tropical Madness Games good enough to make 90's kids not regret not having a GameBoy.
On top of mobile games, I also want to see more old console games being ported to the mobile platform. I can't stress how much of a good work Feral Interactive is doing on porting games such as Alien Isolation and Grid Autosport to mobile.
Showing N.O.V.A 3 at the start and during the video was great decision. I remember playing this in 2016. My mind was blown clean off marvelling at this masterpiece. It's(present tense) still so good that i remember finishing its story 6+times, and recommend it to friends still to this day. This game is my benchmark to judge all shooting games, and sadly 95+% off games fail(im looking at you freefire).
@@headwreak1768 I really hoped and predicted that Gameloft would become the prime mobile game developer for Shooters by releaseing N.O.V.A 4 ,but they never did( don't mention N.O.V.A legacy). For racing Asfalt 9, they did release this but nobody cares about mobile racing games much these days( hate the TouchDrive™ aka baby mode). For RTS and RPG's their pay2win system and ads basically demolished the ratings.
Gameloft was KING at its prime. No one could dare to touch Gameloft at that time. But the king died because most mobile gamers love casual shit unlike PC/Console gamers. Most people would never know there was an FPS CoD game for mobile in around 2014(excluding the pirates/explorers). If you know the name then it you know what I am talking about.
Lucky we have Feral Interactive and I hope most developers realize these kind of people who can bring AAA games to mobile with great service can make Mobile Gaming great again
I recently got my 6-year-old cousin addicted to Plants vs Zombies on her mom's iPhone, and we can all agree that it's a better experience than any mobile game released in the past few years
No why u let ur cousin get addicted to plant vs zombie...U should let ur cousin get addicted with learning 15 languages a year, learning how to be a doctor,a lawyer,an engineer,an inventor, politicans and etc
2D games like Chess and Scrabble are a better mobile experience. The peak of mobile 3D is when it augments a 2D interface like Pokémon Go. Nobody wants to play a fully 3D game without dual-analog or keyboard+mouse.
As a mobile game developer for over 7 years the mobile platform is different because the OS updates are annual and you must support at least the oldest device available every year in accord to the platform to gain the widest audience as much as possible. Finding the midline performance is a must because people do not update phones often and having the latest and greatest tech means the older device will not be able to play the game due to OS/Hardware/Software limitations.
Why not use a performance stress test (for like 30 seconds) to guage what the app is dealing with in terms of hardware. I know some apps auto detect what graphic settings based on the hardware
This is the answer I was looking for, thank you The simple explanation of "there are thousands of devices" didnt make sense to me bc that's arguably even more true with PC gaming But ofc, all PC gaming is done in one (well, 2 now thx to Valve but you dont develop for it) single OS...
@@RobinNashVideos Yeah mobile software and hardware more less come and go due to the nature of its rapid evolution year over year, even the development tools needs to get updated annually in order to submit your programs to the storefront otherwise using the 'outdated' tools and software will just void your submissions altogether., which is to say, too fast for a game development workflow which requires a substantial amount of time just to even finish anything polished.
If a mobile is free, that is the main way they earn money/revenue. Sure they may have purchases available, but if they’re small games with few developers, then it will most likely rely on ads.
Like @@name36154 said, he always covered that topic in a separate video! Including how sooo many mobile games are just another online casino in disguise😐
We might be at a point where just improving the graphics isn't something most gamers (especially mobile) care much about anymore. The best rated game of the year, Zelda, just dropped and it's running only old hardware and it's not gonna be winning any graphical awards.
@Supreme Calamitas in case, mobile game (the big company) not caring about low end device, the good example is pubg mobile, they give low end device a low graphic and fps selection, but it's doesn't work, they just adding more and more skin and effect and make the game laggy
I think it might not win any technical awards, but the art direction is nice. You could release a game with the same quality as that on PS5 and people would still buy it.
@Supreme Calamitas I agree. I don't care about whether or not a game has immaculate graphics, I care about whether it's fun to play. Which Zelda definitely is (also I love the art style too)
Old school mobile gaming really was something else. Glad there are still some developers like Hoyoverse pushing the boundaries on what mobile games can be.
I avoid Genshin Impact by a tenfold. Remember it’s still a greedy gacha game with lootboxes. Plus, I personally found it very boring. I personally don’t understand why’d you do a lot of boring grinding for hundreds of hours, but, your tastes, your time.
I think one of the biggest problems with modern mobile games, is that many of them don't feel like they're made for a phone-or at least doesn't look like it. One of my favorite mobile games are a collection of puzzle games by Barte Bonte named colors: like Red, or Blue. And man, these games are MADE for mobile, and you really grow to appreciate that
On a world level this may seem true because you're looking at a low percentage of actual gamers vs mobile users. But when you look at specific markets like Korea or china (or most of Asia?) Where there's a higher concentration of hardcore gamers, there's no downfall at all. The quality they produce there is insane: cross platform, the latest unreal, etc. But those games are region specific so the world wouldn't know much about it. I think you need to explore this. It's a very interesting topic.
Exactly, i’m fully support this comment. Simply take a look at asia region the mobile gaming industry is really thriving. Gacha game like gensin impact, arknights, TOF, etc. These type of game can generate hundred thousand even millions USD with pretty decent game quality. Not to mention other game of different genre like Mobile legend, AOV, or MOBA game in general. While some of them not thriving like they used to ,but they are popular enough to create an esport out of it with hundreds thousands dollar prize for the winning team. Some of the game I mention are game that figure out phone limitation and still giving their best to accommodate the user like using 2D asset instead of 3D asset or adding setting so user with low end phone can still play their game, while pushing the setting for higher end phone user. So while the gaming industry seems like filled with crappy game with not so good graphics, etc. some game still thrive while pushing the limitations of the higher end device, while still accommodate higher end device. The problem is most of the curent game in market is judge by top download. To do that you need to make the game catchy, clickbait, and advertise them to multiple platform like YT. The result is top gaming section filled with junk games where most of their money goes into advertisements rather than to development proses. These game only think about short term profit, since the over saturation of mobile gaming industry making long term profit making seem not viable. While game with reaaaalllyy good quality with long term development in mind goes unnoticed in top chart get sweep away by crappy game.
Mobile game is doomed to die, those people played mobile game because they couldn't afford to buy a PS5, Xbox, Switch or PC. or a very casual game for your Grandma like candy crush let's be real, everyone at this point already get Carpal Tunnel and Bad Vision from playing mobile game. that was a hefty price to pay for no benefit at all. it's not the best platform to play, it's only good for Gambling based game. it's a cash grab platform that offer little to no value, unlike the Real Game that made with love in Console / PC. the moment people get a decent amount of paycheck in real life, they will instantly switch into Console & PC gaming. that's why basically nobody in the US played a mobile game, because they already had a superior one once you have a console & pc, you won't feel any need to touch mobile games anymore. Unless you're trapped with friends who force you to play gacha game a lot.
The first games I've ever played on mobile were Clash of clans, Minecraft, random zombie shooter games and Minecraft knockoff games. I did play some other classics later on such as Subway Surfers, Jetpack joyride, temple run, fruit ninja, etc. Those were the good times. That and playing videogames with a friend.
Only in NA/EU devs lmaooo Asian dev games are good, maybe even far better than those titans in the west. Look at Hoyoverse with Genshin Impact, Honkai StarRail, Honkai impact 3rd, Tears of Themis. As an ex-Vainglory player, I am reminded that why the game failed (despite it's early success) was because only the highest-end devices can run the game smoothly, which creates a barrier for mid range and lower range mobile users from trying out their game, causing it to eventually phase out. It is also very storage intensive, and each match can take more than 30 mins (including matchmaking) to complete.
Thats why Mobile Legends by MoonToon is very succesfull here in S.E.A. Countries Almost any phone can run it from low to mid to high end and even clone phones can run it
Main reasons why Vainglory and SEMC as a company failed were very bad financial decisions and the early efforts to put the game on Steam even tho it wasn’t ready at all (predominantly a consequence of the financial decisions). I played Vainglory almost since it’s release and loved it so much, it’s a real shame how it ended 💔 to this day I play a few games from time to time to remind me of the good old days:)
thats partly false. Yes, Vainglory runs better on high end phones, but its still playable on all mid end phones and some low ends, as it is very well optimized for such amazing graphics. The reason why it failed is that SEMC made a lot of poor financial decisions like having eSports and making skins too f2p friendly
Nope. The algorithm on TH-cam sucks. First video I seen all month. When you 👍🏿 and subscribe" like all subscribers ask you to do it puts the others to the bottom.
You could use the same reason of phones not improving at the same rate for computers though. The highest end graphics cards will see a huge jump in performance (3090-4090) but the mid-range cards will only see a very small performance gain (3060-4060) and yet PC games still improve constantly
True, but compare a 1060 to 4060 and it's a huge jump, I have a 2070 and I doubt I will upgrade soon as I can run any game I want. If I were to upgrade it would be in the 6000 series at least.
It's sad because when I was a kid in high school in 2013 I used to try imagine what games on a phone would look like 5 or 10 years on but they're the same 😂
@@christophersokanyile5809 if you speak in the 2000's it is better but from 2010's even early 2010's they not grew a lot. I can't say the mobile game that got popular from early 2010's is bad because there's less grow to nowadays game. (both android and IOS already existed in early 2010s even though they're not on the throne because blackberry and windows phone is there with their life almost ended)
I remember having a lower end phone that could run Genshin Impact until the game eventually updated. While my friends could talk about Genshin or stuff that happened there I was left out so there really is a gap when high end games are made that can only be run by certain devices
Remember fortnight? Back in 2018 it was only supported on iOS and flagship Samsung devices. You have no idea how left out I was when everyone was literally crazy about it.
The performance gap is not the issue, in PC games we have graphic settings to match the specs of the PC (resolution, frame rate, details, shadows etc). A set of options that many mobile games today have kept forgetting. Thus, also causing performance/heating issues on low end or old phones, effecting the general mobile usage experience. Its time mobile developers understand reality and high time Google/Apple sets some standards so that developers bring the best out of the Android Gaming experience while maintaining compatibility ❤
Hardcore gamers tend to dislike mobile especially microtransactions and would choose over a platform(pc, consoles) that is intended for gaming. Casual gamers don't care for fps or ray tracing. As a game developer why settle in a small set of hardcore audience when there are tons of casual players out there in the mobile market.
Touch screens suck. For me, before we even get to how poor quality the games are or even the performance issues, touch inputs aren't suitable for gaming. Even games like temple run that are built around touch inputs are so imprecise. I stopped playing temple run and subway surfers because even though I enjoyed the games, firstly, they grew stale pretty quickly and secondly, there's a low skill ceiling beyond which you can't improve that is imposed on you by the touch screen
i think some mobile games now certainly do look better than before, but i feel like a big part of it is that developers have started treating phones as their own device type, instead of trying to just turn them into consoles, which in my opinion is a better decision. i'd say there are certainly plenty of high quality mobile games still as well, though for every well made one from devs like supercell, mihoyo, etc. there's a hundreds of crappy ones along the lines of the voodoo games.
Yes 100%. The barrier to entry is low (pointed out in the video). It's straight up just a byproduct of scaling the industry. Lots of swings, few wins. Normal in any competitive industry.
@@spicesmuggler2452 regardless, playing emulated console games is a better experience in almost all cases, unless a real game already has a good mobile port that you don't have to emulate, like Stardew Valley or Vampire Survivors for example. Also while touch controls might suck for majority of genres, turn-based games, or games where execution speed is not needed at all, work perfectly fine.
@Rocka well must be nice to have a personal TV that's always free to play games. The one we have is almost always used by someone, and in my room there is no space to put one. Also, lets not forget that you can take a phone anywhere, but you can't take your TV with you.
I think the big problem is that most developers don't focus on keeping players. They focus on getting new players in the door cuz anyone can download for free, so as long as people leave some money when they walk out the door it's a win
Not to mention that the best games on Android tend to be not that graphically inclined, my favorite recently has been mages survival which is surprisingly fun for just moving around and selecting the moves you want.
A problem I have is that free mobile games are rarely not plagued with aggressive ads or micro transactions anymore (especially any retro titles being released by sega for free on iPhone)
@@junaidahmad9283 seee I played honkai impact and while I loved the game as a kid iv noticed that looking at it now I’m not the biggest fan of games like that especially any that have a gacha like or yknow microtransactions. Sadly genishen impact isn’t my thing.
It's not so great It's not a big deal also these youtubers have a team who do everything and these guys have to appear and say those things he have above 14 million subscribers so do you think he is making all these videos by himself
This is why mihoyos big success and earnings from Honkai impact, to genshin, up to star rail are so unbelievable considering that most are playing their game as F2P. Their games are cross platform from mobile to pc and play station
I actually want Mihoyo to make a premium full priced game mainly for PC and consoles and just sell it on mobile on the side. They've already got the resources AND the reputation, they could definitely go AAA with at least one title. I just wanna see what they can do without the restrictions of a gacha system.
@@eregriou That's interesting. Mhy seems to want to try all sorts of new genres now, an FPS game made in their style would definitely be interesting. It would likely be a hero shooter given the emphasis their games have on their characters, and I'm not a big fan of hero shooters that aren't Apex. But hey, maybe I'll like it.
its hard to imagine the downfall of gaming mobile, maybe to a spesific region it is, but in other region like Asia or SEA the majority gaming was clearly from mobile gaming, the community and the developer still pushing through what they built
Don't agree completely, because he compared performance with Consols and PC's also have these extreme specs variations so, "Graphics Setting" comes to picture, think of it as me with snapdragon 845 will run the same game on 720P low settings vs someone with 8Gen2 will run the same game in 1080p High settings and ray tracing on. (And every future processor will just run the game better) giving that game a typical lifecycle of 6 years (enough for story mode games). 2- when PS 2 was there, PSP also did great in the market despite its limited 3D capabilities against Powerful PS 2. 3- Before this call of duty online, they made a call of duty story mode game, with great graphics and story, I played it on a 100$ smartphone. 4. It's not possible to make PC or Console ports to Android for the demanding titles like Forza Horizon. But a standalone smartphone series of the game is still possible, Like we saw in PSP for god of war and Nintendo games. And many less demanding PC titles are Leo's fortune, and The walking dead series (GAME OF THE YEAR winning title) was ported well on Android and again I played it on a 100$ smartphone.
@@unknownx.69True but they gotta deserve to Shine, Since they are free and You don't actually need to spend money there, People say it's a waste of time playing those games but let's be honest here Isn't playing games a waste of time in the first place?
Mihoyo as a company standalone achieved most gamers have dreamt of ever since they started gaming, cross platform gaming experience at its finest. They are gonna benefit out of all their games as long as they keep bringing new content updates on regular basis. Prop ups to mihoyo
Lol, Mihoyo produces microtransaction games. You call that quality? Sure, it looks good and impressive, but as long as it's a f2p game, it'll never reach the status many memorable games do.
@@AdamSinsuat I have talked about cross platforming which means I can play the game almost all gaming platforms like pc, Xbox, Ps... It is a gacha game so its whole substructure is built upon micro transactions. What do you expect? They recruit all those people and build a game out of charity? 😂😂 You can be f2p but the game is obviously p2w and very much supported by some whales... Plus there is no pvp content at all and never gonna be one in the future (a developer said it once in a QA.) I mean whales just please themselves they don't have no harm to anyone. So it is a win win for all parties
@MrFelocan for me, f2p games are a trap 99% of the time. All the things you've spent in? They'll eventually go away once the devs deem the game unprofitable. They could always make the game paid if they wanted to. But nobody in the mobile market is gonna do it because they'd rather exploit people than give them something they can own. That's a scummy tactic
You should consider about rhythm games: they're extremely underrated and actually is one of the hardest games to run perfectly on since all of a phone's flaw can be revealed while playing a good rhythm game
They're also often the most consistent genre in terms of monitization. Unless it's Beatstar, because that game royally sucks. (piano tiles doesn't count either)
Had a tab s7+ when it was the latest samsung tablet. Used to play deemo, bandori and cytus. In every single one of them, when playing harder charts, there would be times where it would not register a tap or a few taps, making fcing something 100% RNG. You're better of getting an Ipad if you plan on mainly playing rythm games, want a tablet, and have the budget.
Omg yes, ive tried nearly all popular ones in my region and Phirgros and Paradigm are some cool ones, my personal fave is Cytus 2 though Just felt likesharing as i rarely find someone to talk about rhythm games with TvT
I remember when I was a young teen in the early 2010s that mobile games were getting better and better and then around 2013 to 2014 they just stopped making new games. Ever since I completely lost interest in mobile gaming as a whole and when I browse the App Store from time to time I still find the very same games that I played as a 13 year old over 10 years ago. I played Temple Run 2 and Subway Surfers in 2012 and people somehow still aren't tired of them
if I'm not mistaken, chair, the developer sold their game and publishing right to some bigger corporation. then, shortly after the acquisition they removed the game from appstore. probably because the new developer don't have any idea how to continue the lore. they could make the game a paid game instead of free and people would still buy it (like the room 1,2,3). but the developer are incompetent and want to make sure people forget infinity blade exist.
Oh my god same. I cried seeing it gone. However the game pretty much died and lost all of its fanbase in terms of playing when Epic Games had the lawsuit against Apple and Samsung thanks to the bypass of their 30% transaction fee on Fortnite. That made Apple and Google play store cut ties to Epic Games and all their games. Since Infinity Blades has always been an ios exclusive game, it is now impossible to download the game without jumping through so many hoops that basically dissolves 90% of the players that are even interested in playing it anymore, as if it was an android game, it would be much easier to find an apk of the game to download.
I think Genshin and Honkai star rail is an exception to most of these rules. But pretty much all of these points stand for a majority of the games on the App Store.
console gaming is so amazing now! it's crazy how a decade ago mobile games looked so bitty, and now you've got cloud gaming and etc. to go off the hook with console and mobile gaming together!
The main problem I've had with mobile gaming is the constant need to be connected to the Internet to function. I hate having to look at "now connecting to server" loading screens when all I want to do is change a setting or look at a stat. God forbid your phone switches networks too slowly when your "loading" another menu and you get the dreaded "server not connected/available" prompt and get banished to the title screen.

I have been uploading mobile gaming content since 2020 and back then it was amazing, like people always watch my videos but nowadays everything seems to be difficult like I upload every week and I can barely get hundreds of viewers. maybe because I only have 3000+ subscribers but I really feel that people have now realized that mobile gaming is only for convenience and practicality as what you said and I feel sad about this.
He's definitely had a miss in this video when talking about optimisation, devs suffer from the same issue when coding for phones as when they do for PC's because of the same argument, too many variables. Also he's missed really badly in the samsung moonshots video, that one was cringe to watch.
0:30 while it’s correct. Technically you have to consider normal apps such as vpn, Netflix anything that requires subscriptions In addition every app has 3-types of monetizations: - one time purchase (buying the application) - in app purchases (micro transactions) - ad monetization (THE REAL MONEY MAKER) Ads are the main reason behind the mobile gaming success cause they perform passive income. So wether you installed a free game and DID NOT buy anything you buying ads through YOUR TIME. “TIME = MONEY”
Nahh, the real issue is the games themselves. 1. greed (microtransactions fucking everywhere) 2. unbalanced/bad progression (rider world WAS a good example until the update) 3. some developers don't evn know how to make fun games (any generic 3d game where you go on a track collecting things and avoiding things)
This became really obvious to me when I bought Alien Isolation on Android a few months ago. The graphics in that game blew my mind (real-time lighting and shadows, lit volumetric smoke), I had no idea that a phone was capable of running such a graphically intensive game. Not to mention it was a fully single player campaign with no microtransactions or adverts which you don't see anymore. Now when I look on the play store, all of the 3D games just look generic and cheap.
A few years back Huawei was saying how they were going to put raytracing into their GPU SOCs until they got canceled and denied access to the finest of TSMC. To be fair its unlikely it would have been good, but we're missing out on a future where mobile game devs could have been integrating rtx into mobile games.

One thing you have to remember, Chinese companies are famous for just straight up lying about products. China claims it invented anime and soccer for example.
Sorry i am late but ray tracing on mobile?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Most mobile game developer dont care that much about graphics let alone adding rt , also most mobile games are esports where fps are very important.
I think it would be really interesting to see a video on the downfall of browser games - I myself have a Chromebook (Not by choice) so it is very obvious to me how whenever I try to find an online game they are 10 times worse than they used to be (Partly due to the murder of flash support)
im not sure, but i feel you can play games on a chromebook (depending on its hardware and how old it is)..i dont have much experience with chrome os, but recently i installed intellij, a coding software on a chromebook for a friend, n it worked..that thing was new so it had a built in linux virtual machine in it.. so the linux versions of the less demanding pc games should work too right?, linux versions of console emulators? also i read installing playstore and running android games is another possibility, if you can find the better ones from the heap of garbage..
When you show the benchmarks around 1:00, I want to see what app it is and watch closely. However, you used different versions of the benchmark: 9.5.8 and 9.5.7. Those can make a difference.
You may notice the cycle a game goes through is relevant. Marvel Snap for example came out this year, was highlighted at the game awards just last week, and yet is already at the stage of spending their good will by silently removing features that benefit players and pulling content to sell it back to you. Console games do this a little, but it usually isn't in the very first year like Marvel Snap and other mobile games
the only games i’ve played that don’t have intrusive ads have extremely predatory monetization practices (gacha/lootboxes, timegating, etc) but these days it doesn’t really matter because more and more games are starting to have intrusive ads and microtransactions all over the place on top of that. it sure is nice to live in the 21st century where everyone and everything is out there to squeeze out as much money from you as possible
And also something I have noticed is most people is never gonna be mobile gamer forever, me for example until I got my first console I used to be an avid mobile gamer but as soon as I got an xbox one I haven't touched my phone ever since, same with my console to as soon as I built my pc my xbox became a multimedia device.
I’m surprised that more classics were not ported, there should have been a flood of refreshed titles from PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, GameCube and now even X360. Truth be told when I think that my laptop from 2012 had so many capabilities it’s weird that my phone has not started to replace that market (just connect to a bigger display and turn on a desktop mode).
@@boltez6507 yeah but it should be a simple seamless experience that's standard in any smartphone with a 1K price tag, what I mean is that a casual user that buys a phone in 2023 for $1199 would only need a wireless keyboard instead of another device like a notebook
Sega did that for some of their classic titles, but yeah it's a shame you can't get many older console games on mobile through official channels. Emulation is the way to go if you use android. As for running a full desktop environment, since android is running on top of the linux kernel, it is feasible for a very advanced user to use a terminal and create their own custom gui, you can also use termux and get a desktop linux os running but getting actual display is a bit hacky and not plug and play. Samsung does a decent enough job with their dex but that only exists for some models of their phones and at that point it'd cheaper to just buy a laptop. Portable PCs like steam deck are better in this regard, however there's nothing really stopping android or manufacturers from implementing a desktop mode aside from economic costs and consumer demand.
I think another important factor is that the mobile gaming market used to be more special. Back in 2012 it was a novelty to be able to play games on your phone/tablet, so the games back then just felt more magical. Another thing is how the business model for mobile games has changed. Most mobile games used to cost real money to download, just like console/pc games. However, companies soon after realized just how much more money they could make by publishing free-to-play games with micro transactions and loot boxes. The market is definitely not what it used to be. I used to get over a year worth of game time from one angry birds game for just a few dollars. How time has changed.
This is so relatable as a guy who always play mobile games for like 9 years but this year I just got bored with it part of the reason why I decided its time to buy a new gaming PC so I did and now I'm gonna stuck with probably forever, and the prices of phone now is ridiculous than you can pretty much buy a decent PC parts with that price. Yeah PC and consoles is the best.
Being a game designer I can tell what you said was correct. Majority of the games are developed for casual audience becuase they are higher in no. than other type of audience and to run these games minimun requirement starts with 2gb ram phones. Mobile game needs to be highly optimized to avoid battery issues, bugs, ux issues, gameplay issues, etc. Mobile games focuses more on optimization than graphics but I think instead of focusing on graphics we should focus on making game fun and engaging.
3:05 yeah that's true and that is why developers should optimize their games well and add more graphics options (like lowest quality, low, medium, high, ultra high)
Bypass charging mode is a thing. If you plan to play games all day, this feature is a big help in terms of battery longevity. The phone will draw power from the power brick rather than from the battery. Sony did this first and now Asus, Samsung and other manufacturers are applying it on their phones now.
In early 2010s I was absolutely blown away with Real Racing 2 and 3, a full console-like track racing experience on mobile where 99% of other racing games is just 2d drag races, it got street cars, race cars, damage, repair, upgrades and even livery editor, it's like a Gran Turismo/ Forza mobile! And now 10 years later if I want to play track racing game like RR3, I would play... RR3. Not because it's a masterpiece of a game, or better than it's competitor but rather there's just... nothing else. 10 years have passed and there seems to be 0 progress for this genre in the mobile gaming space. A lot of games on similar genre just opt for pvp only drifts with no bots, no (or horrendously made) campaign/career Even RR3 seems so be stuck in time. That livery editor that I praised a while ago? Haven't changed a single bit ever since it's introduction, in fact it seems to got worse as I now got gray border on every single vinyls I think the biggest problem with mobile gaming space is the fact that it is _too_ accessible. I have no clue how to explain this properly cuz my english is horrible, but a big chunk of mobile gamers are just children who just gobble everything up without any critical thinking (and not just the children who does this), even the absolute half baked mobile game can rake up profits, just need to be flashy and put insignificant but a LOT of rewards to trigger those sweet endorphins from their playerbase, make them think they were being rewarded. So why try when you can just do the bare minimum and get rich in the mobile space? Spend nearly nothing, get millions in return, repeat
@@gladiatorgamer9502 not if it's connected to the internet and have no updates. I don't want to upgrade but felt force to. If Samsung gives me 20 years update, then sure 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I will use it for 20 years, no problem. Ok in the real world, I would use a Samsung phone up to 6 years, if brand new. I would at least use it to when all the updates and patches finishes

Misinformation.. He compared Vernee with Samsung budget phone and say the performance didn't have much difference.. He should be comparing Vernee with Xiaomi Poco lineup as they both have same principle putting flagship hardware in budget phones..
I think a lot of these arguments fall apart when you compare the mobile market to the PC market, it has the same, if not a vastly greater variety in specs from PC to PC, yet they still represent the pinnacle of innovation when it comes to gaming graphics and technology. With the collapse of esports I don’t think it’s a lack of “hype” or competitive events that drown mobile gaming. Really I think its a lack of investment in the space overall, like he said with the small dev teams, but on a grander scale. It seems despite the money coming in, there is a boarderline criminal lack of reinvestment from major mobile gaming studios, which has tanked the reputation of the entire space.
There are mobiles games like Genshin with big dev teams with grand scale production and they make shit tons of money from gatcha😂it really depends on market situation where east Asian countries are starting to make better and better moblie games and those companies are getting bigger and bigger, where in Europe and America its the complete opposite
Yeah it could definitely have the potential though a lot of the time the issue with big games is storage, the average size of a PC game is from 10GB all the way up to 200GB, a lot are even bigger and the average phone user likely has almost no space on their device so you'd need to be quite a hardcore user About performance issues that's an easy thing to fix, just give the game a graphic settings menu like most games on PC do so even yo mom's low end MediaTek android can run it loo

I agree. I don’t understand what people play on gaming phones these days. I don’t even understand why people are buying gaming phones or why companies make them. For which games??
Genshin, Honkai games, PUBG, CODM, Black Desert mobile, Snowbreak, GFL2, PGR, Persona 5X, and all the upcoming AAA budget games like Zenless Zone and Wuthering Waves. There are plenty of these high quality mobile games that are already available and even getting ported to consoles and PC, ya'll are just clueless and out of touch with the market is all.
1:03 the problem is samsung , other brands phone under 200 dollar has 400k+ antutu zcore . And the 300 doallr realme gt neo 3t has 700k+ antutu score . My 170 dollar realme 6 from 2020 had 300k+ antut score .
thats because of a brand strategy called 'upselling'. Samsung will purposely make the M series way worse in terms of hardware and performance so people would pay more to get better phones. Since Realme doesn't have flagship phones (kinda), it doesn't need to do that, which is why you get the full value from the phone.
One big factor also affecting mobile gaming is 'Size' constraints. For ex. The size of cod : mobile is more than 10GB + . If people wanna install 2 good graphics games it will cost them 15-20GB of internal data and most of the time our storage is normally full or less available.

0:10 In 2013 the Galaxy S3 wasn't the best one no more. The performance gap is also quite BS. A Galaxy A40 runs PUBG Mobile MUCH better than a Lenovo K6 Note did. The Lenovo would struggle beyond low settings, while the Samsung would run it even at medium-high settings. Budget phones have improved significantly in real world performance.
One hope for mobile games is to go cross-platform, like what Genshin did. It looks great visually, you can play it at home on pc or ps4/5 and you can continue playing once you go out. Your progress is shared across all devices
@@Worldofdocumentary_now No it’s not a great idea. Thanks so much for covering this Arun, this has been my favourite deep dive that you've done so far! Appreciate you for exploring and talking about mobile gaming passionately and comparing it to console game development. One thing I'm curious about though is how gaming on the Apple store differs from the google playstore. I assume that iphone game devs have to deal with way less fragmentation and catering to a variety of hardware, than android game devs. In that sense, did you find any major differences in popular games for Iphone vs Android? I felt like in the early 2010s game dev boom, iphone games were more advanced than andoid, don't know if it holds up now. Are there any modern iphone games with unbelievably stunning graphics that android users don't get? Also, where do tablets factor into all this? Or does no one care about tablets anymore in the fold phone era?
You might want to also consider the gacha factor in mobile games as it went from niche, to maintream popular when Genshin tipped the scales, now days gacha games are coming out in droves every month some of them make it and are a mainstay, developers and publishers are beginning to take root too. Hoyoverse, Yostar, Cygames to name a few. Cygames already released games on consoles
Since Android games need to be updated constantly, unnecessary problems may occur in the games. Even a 50 MB game does not run faster than 30 fps, but games played on an emulator always run fast because the only thing that is updated here is the application. Now even PS1 games are sharper and more fluid. Can't they prepare Android games with this method?
Would love to see a follow up video to this about anomalies to this video's thesis such as Genshin Impact which could pass as a triple A title and why it succeeds. Also where can this market go from here with such ideas as Apple Arcade.
Resident Evil 4 a popular game was ported to Iphone 15 Pro Max and it still laggs a bit during fight scenes . But the fact that the game was ported to the phone it gives us hope that in 6-7-8 years we will run some more realistic games and maybe developers would port their older games to the newer and more powerful phones
I always have been a mobile gamer, since I had no PC when I was younger. Now, that I have a laptop, I play less on mobile. But I have never stopped playing Mobile Legends and I don't think I ever will. It is just too much fun to play, especially after 6 years of experience.
I still remember the days when I was playing the Infinity Blade trilogy. I would leave the house with 100% battery on the phone (iPhone 4S) and by the time I got home was 5%. Compatibility issues is what killed Infinity Blade. I couldn't even get it to properly run on my iPhone 6S Plus due to the menus being de-synced. This is the number one reason why these games get delisted quickly
I never got into mobile gaming (beyond candy crush and angry birds) but the socioeconomic status relationship to money spent on phones + the amount of time playing phones games is the main point here. Richer people will buy flagships but will not waste time playing phone games every day.

In the era of Gameloft we used to have standalone single player campaigns with great great graphics.

Some examples off the top of my head:
-Need for Speed -> Asphalt
-GTA -> Gangstar
-FIFA -> Real Football
-Tekken/Mortal Kombat -> Medieval Combat
-The Sims -> Miami/New York Nights
-Rock Band/Guitar Hero -> Guitar Rock Tour
-Super Monkey Ball -> Tropical Madness

THIS. Also Wreckfest a game I could barely run on pc 6 years ago, now running on phones and looking almost better than the ps4 port.

What company you work in?
Why not use a performance stress test (for like 30 seconds) to guage what the app is dealing with in terms of hardware. I know some apps auto detect what graphic settings based on the hardware
This is the answer I was looking for, thank you
The simple explanation of "there are thousands of devices" didnt make sense to me bc that's arguably even more true with PC gaming
But ofc, all PC gaming is done in one (well, 2 now thx to Valve but you dont develop for it) single OS...

it's running on old hardware because Nintendo doesn't feel the need to make a new console

But Asians also eat Bats which caused the Covid-19 pandemic so what is the point of your argument? :)
But they are full of microtransactions with ads with pisspoor gameplay to cash out their own citizens.Nobody wants those 😂

Vainglory 😢
Thats why Mobile Legends by MoonToon is very succesfull here in S.E.A. Countries
Almost any phone can run it from low to mid to high end and even clone phones can run it
Main reasons why Vainglory and SEMC as a company failed were very bad financial decisions and the early efforts to put the game on Steam even tho it wasn’t ready at all (predominantly a consequence of the financial decisions).
I played Vainglory almost since it’s release and loved it so much, it’s a real shame how it ended 💔 to this day I play a few games from time to time to remind me of the good old days:)
@Ansg It sad cause I start playing vainglory in the end of it life cycle & it the only Moba game I like...
thats partly false. Yes, Vainglory runs better on high end phones, but its still playable on all mid end phones and some low ends, as it is very well optimized for such amazing graphics. The reason why it failed is that SEMC made a lot of poor financial decisions like having eSports and making skins too f2p friendly
the real problem with mobile games is not the graphics but the fact that 99% of mobile "games" are pay to win scams rather than real games.
And also one has to spend more time reading than playing

You could use the same reason of phones not improving at the same rate for computers though. The highest end graphics cards will see a huge jump in performance (3090-4090) but the mid-range cards will only see a very small performance gain (3060-4060) and yet PC games still improve constantly
True, but compare a 1060 to 4060 and it's a huge jump, I have a 2070 and I doubt I will upgrade soon as I can run any game I want. If I were to upgrade it would be in the 6000 series at least.

@@adityanarayansreejith9362 Runs perfectly fine on 6 year old flagships! 60FPS is no issue at all. Just use low-medium settings.
Explain that to a kid, a grandma or a parent. Let's see if they even know what an fps is or how it makes a difference when playing.

I am a proud PC Supremacist. Always have been, always will be.
i think some mobile games now certainly do look better than before, but i feel like a big part of it is that developers have started treating phones as their own device type, instead of trying to just turn them into consoles, which in my opinion is a better decision.
i'd say there are certainly plenty of high quality mobile games still as well, though for every well made one from devs like supercell, mihoyo, etc. there's a hundreds of crappy ones along the lines of the voodoo games.

Emulators do not classify as mobile games tho, even if they can be.

I think the big problem is that most developers don't focus on keeping players. They focus on getting new players in the door cuz anyone can download for free, so as long as people leave some money when they walk out the door it's a win

(And every future processor will just run the game better) giving that game a typical lifecycle of 6 years (enough for story mode games).

3- Before this call of duty online, they made a call of duty story mode game, with great graphics and story, I played it on a 100$ smartphone.
4. It's not possible to make PC or Console ports to Android for the demanding titles like Forza Horizon. Oh my god same. I cried seeing it gone. However the game pretty much died and lost all of its fanbase in terms of playing when Epic Games had the lawsuit against Apple and Samsung thanks to the bypass of their 30% transaction fee on Fortnite.

My main issue is mobile adds. I try to play a nice small game and then get ads shoved down my throat making me leave the app.
Exactly, when we sit down to play a game, it is usually in a situation, where we want to relax a bit, not to be bothered by anything, let alone ads.
the only games i’ve played that don’t have intrusive ads have extremely predatory monetization practices (gacha/lootboxes, timegating, etc)

it sure is nice to live in the 21st century where everyone and everything is out there to squeeze out as much money from you as possible

The "instead on focusing on graphics" sounds like it can go in 2 ways...
A lot of games on similar genre just opt for pvp only drifts with no bots, no (or horrendously made) campaign/career
Even RR3 seems so be stuck in time. That livery editor that I praised a while ago? Haven't changed a single bit ever since it's introduction, in fact it seems to got worse as I now got gray border on every single vinyls
I think the biggest problem with mobile gaming space is the fact that it is _too_ accessible.
Your English is fine😉
That's why it's sometimes better to get old flagship phones when they get discounted whilst sacrificing updates
Why is it better to give ur money to phone companies?Cant u just use ur phone for 10 years plus?

Misinformation
misinformation, not mentioning any asian game
Yeah it could definitely have the potential though a lot of the time the issue with big games is storage, the average size of a PC game is from 10GB all the way up to 200GB, a lot are even bigger and the average phone user likely has almost no space on their device so you'd need to be quite a hardcore user
About performance issues that's an easy thing to fix, just give the game a graphic settings menu like most games on PC do so even yo mom's low end MediaTek android can run it loo
Only in NA/EU devs lmaooo

There are plenty of these high quality mobile games that are already available and even getting ported to consoles and PC, ya'll are just clueless and out of touch with the market is all.
logically it's about the money

1:03 the problem is samsung , other brands phone under 200 dollar has 400k+ antutu zcore . And the 300 doallr realme gt neo 3t has 700k+ antutu score .
My 170 dollar realme 6 from 2020 had 300k+ antut score .
thats because of a brand strategy called 'upselling'. Samsung will purposely make the M series way worse in terms of hardware and performance so people would pay more to get better phones. Since Realme doesn't have flagship phones (kinda), it doesn't need to do that, which is why you get the full value from the phone.
@@whyiseverysinglehandletaken2 Yeah that the whole reason realme was created in the first place

@@Worldofdocumentary_nowFortnite on mobile is trash on any device.
@@Worldofdocumentary_now No it’s not a great idea. Many phones that could actually run the game have been cut out because Epic sees nothing but business, and people are forced to spend money to buy the latest and greatest, just to get a subpar experience.

Resident Evil 4 a popular game was ported to Iphone 15 Pro Max and it still laggs a bit during fight scenes . But the fact that the game was ported to the phone it gives us hope that in 6-7-8 years we will run some more realistic games and maybe developers would port their older games to the newer and more powerful phones
