I am really happy you trust Singapore's security so much, but do still be careful in some places and always go in a group. Low Crime doesn't mean no Crime after all.
Hi Ghib, as a Singaporean myself it depends which part of Geylang you go to. If you stick on the main road, it is usually safer and free of sleazy vice activities which sometimes there are police raids in the area. But if its the street name starts "Lorong", I would say it is best to steer clear of the even number streets as those are the streets where vice and prostitution activities occur usually at night and occasionally there are police raids and patrol in the area, especially on the restriction on the consumption of alcohol and the brothels there aren't legal though prostitution is technically legal in Singapore, but soliciting and other various prostitution-related activities are criminalized, which is why it is advisable to steer clear of the even number Lorongs altogether. And from the video of the places you went, I personally feel it is safe because it's the main road, but if you were to walk pass in one of these Lorong in even number, very likely you might be harassed by these prostitutes (especially if you are alone), and it is also not safe for a lady as well especially for the notoriety of the area, she could be mistaken for one even if she isn't which is why it is advisable to steer clear of the area (especially the even number Lorongs), which is what you exactly did by walking along the main road section of Geylang.
@@phoenixflambe3319 It's asia. Thailand, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and China, etc. They all have vice, and the major effort is devoted to containing the problems that arise from it, not the vice itself. The tourist friendly stuff happens elsewhere, the vice areas of Geylong are risky and you REALLY need to make friends with some locals(just like every other Asian country) if you want to do sex tourism.
Geylang is not dangerous, it's just unsavoury to some people because it's the red light district. Parents might not want to bring their children there, but I spent years in Geylang in my teens (around 10+ years ago) and only ever witnessed one occasion where an old man just straight up asked a lady, "How much?".
I grew up in Geylang area in the 70s when my uncle had a shophouse there. There are undergound gambling dens and prostitution but its not any dangerous than it is now. Its safe to walk in the day and at night.
when you start talking about your kombu snack to go with your porridge, somehow it reminds me of how some Singaporean old folks probably go overseas and bring along their own personal jars of sambal belacan chilli (personally witnessed this myself many many years ago when I travelled with a group tour to Europe 😂 )

Same for yishun. Whole of my life nothing happened to me. Sure shit comes out on news but it usually happens on the east of yishun. The west side of yishun is pretty chill. Plus, there will always be ppl exaggerating the bad news on yishun even though it happens in other areas too.

Actually you've covered it a year ago in your Paya Lebar video. But yes, oddly enough, mention Geylang to a Singaporean Malay and it will invoke images of the Paya Lebar area rather than the Aljunied area, unless you mention Geylang red light district or Geylang Lorong.
Lorong Geylang always had a reputation as a red light area when I was stationed in Nee Soon many years ago. Saying that, love going there whenever I revisit Singapore, the older buildings remind me of what Singapore looked like back then. Great food stalls too.
Guilinggao (direct translation is tortoise jelly) is made of Chinese herbs (old recipe will have tortoise shell but the modern recipe do away of it) which is being boil for long hours and the liquid will solidify like into jelly (one of the herb has jelly like component). It is said it has cooling effect (Oriental Chinese medicine identify qi in the body is heaty (hot) or cool). Usually have this to "cool off" from late nights, too much heaty food / durians or having pimples 😂
I've been to Geylang many times with my family to eat the frog porridge! Normally the porridge is too bland so we will pour some gravy from the frog stew into the porridge and give it a good mix. There's even unique variant of frog porridge such as Chicken Essence Frog Porridge (personally never try it). But yes, no matter how safe a place is, we still must stay vigilant!

Ghib-san, that black dessert called 龟苓膏 (guilingua) is actually a Chinese herbs that treat common alignment such as sore throat, heatiness and indigestion.
The main streets are as safe as strolling along Orchard Road. Even the lorongs (both even and odd) are quite safe, lots of condominiums around this area too. Now it's those little alleys that connect one lorongs to the other that's when it starts to get a bit dangerous and some of the more seedy and illegal side pops out it's head. But it's still relatively safe if u mind ur own business especially nowadays with so many police cameras everywhere. Now 30-40 yrs ago... That's when geylang was more notorious. Now it's just a pale shadow of it's former self and the articles u mentioned are probably written by ppl who visited Geylang in the 70s-90s
Places to avoid in geylang are back alleys n brothels (the even numbers from lor 2 up to 24).As for illegal hawking of medicinal, avoid at all cause (raids do take place). Generally, walking along main road is safe, food is a must to venture.
Geylang is a "red-light" district of Singapore. Generally it is safe. There are many Police cameras strategically placed at intersections and back alleys. Ghib, you should experiment with a female friend and let her explore the lorongs in Geylang with you following her from behind with a camera. That will be a better judge to see if Geylang is safe or not.
To open the pack just hold the green plastic string and turn it in the opposite direction that the knot was tied in. After a few rounds, the knot will loosen, really easy. Geylang is not dangerous for guys, especially along the main road. If you go into the side lanes, some of the working ladies may ask if you are interested to do business (if you know what i mean).
Geylang has evolved so much! Lots delicious food with long queue outside and cafe and gelato shops to explore! i love Geylang! And been there for supper many times now. It's no longer a red lignt district and is absolutely just as safe as anywhere else in Sg!
Red light districts in Singapore are typically under heavier police surveillance. There are also stricter alcohol restrictions there. Although, I'd say women walking alone in the main streets at night isn't very dangerous anywhere in Singapore.
07:50 hold the plastic bag by the top with one hand, tension the entire string away with the other, and circle the string 1,2 circles round the knot and it will loosen itself up. as for geylang itself, it safer on the main street. as for the Lorongs (even numbers), you'll have street walkers and peddlers selling illegal cigarettes etc. so do be more careful when you stray from the main street
Ghib san try to hold the bag with your index and thumb on the top just like the way your holding on 07:43 , after that pull the green string tight on a reverse direction(if the string loop is facing right you pull toward left vise verse). Example in 07:43 the loop is facing left which you should pull towards the right. If you do it correctly it will end with only 1rotation around the "neck", much easier to untie those messy knot. Hope it helps
Perhaps Japan start the report back in the early 90s - 00s where Geylang was full of brothels, underground gambling dens and Street freelance women .. It was the exotic times but after the COVID-19, things changed..
It will be more crowded on weekends, many foreign workers like to visit there during their off days. The main road is very safe. You just have to careful when crossing the road because of traffic jams. I would advise not to walk into the back lane which is dim.
Geylang is safe to walk around.. Old Number Lane is mainly food while the even number lanes (lor 8 to 16) are known as the red light districts maybe that is why people will say it is dangerous.
Nice video! If it's bustling then it should be safe but on the contrary, if it's deserted like the industrial areas then it's probably more unsafe than the so called "unsafe" areas highlighted by the media. I mean you could get attacked by stray dogs or no one would hear your cry for help if something were to happen in those ulu areas.
Gui Ling Gao is a type of herbal jelly. In the old traditaional recipe, it required turtle shell to make. Therefore it's name GUI which means Turtle. Those pills are 'enhancements' pills for 'bed exercise'. Geylang is a special place where you can find brothels and temples near each other. And because of the brothels nearby, that's why there so many 'pill sellers'.
Pro Tip: Pull the string taut and rotate it anti-clockwise around the top of the bag. This will loosen and widen the noose. it will then be easy to open. No need to depend on your fingernails!
Hi Ghib, the area is gradually being gentrified. I used to live in one of the newer condos there. Some of the even-numbered lorongs (around 6 to 20) make up some sort of red-light district, but it's nothing really dodgy. I feel very safe walking around those parts.
I trained Muay Thai in Geylang for a couple of years so I guess I could give my POV. Geylang is full of many many nationalities mixing together, with many character from Myammar and Chinese labourers, to local gangsters in their expensive cars. I used to have that mindset that Geylang is dangerous and shady but the more I went there the more I realised it’s just a place with lots of character. I do not have any bad experiences with Geylang and I’ve been there and walked around at midnight by myself after training. I even have a white as day American friend who stays there and likes it for the cheap housing and beers. Geylang isn’t bad it just isn’t sterile like rest of Singapore but it’s a good and safe experience to just walk around and explore the neighbourhood, the good there is good and cheap too. Just don’t be a dick looking for trouble and trouble won’t find you
I was born in Lor 1 Geylang. Perhaps it is famous for brothels (even numbers). And of course, there are illegal hookers, makeshift gambling dens, illegal sex drugs peddling on the streets, and occasionally some drunk fighting. But that was many years ago. Even that, it is still primary safe. I missed the food there since I moved to Punggol almost 18 years ago.
There are good numbers of interesting restaurants, a lot of religious practices, clubs, karaoke & of course legal brothel houses if you bother to find them at the side lanes for those who need the services.
Geylang gets adventurous after 2am. Then again I personally can't say much becos I don't hang around there after 2am. And depends which location. Geylang for me is good dinner and then fall out.
To open the plastic packet, twirl the string the opposite direction of how it was tied. If you can't figure out which way, just twirl clock wise and if it doesn't work, twirl it anti clock wise.
There is another location of Gong He Guan on Upper Cross Street in Chinatown that has a somewhat larger selection. Mango Gui Ling Gao is so great but they don’t have it at Geylang location.
They will only use a plastic bag to hold the soup if you order takeaway. You can then add the soup to the noodle in the comfort of your home. This maintains the good texture of the ban mian.
Guilinggao is thought to be good for the skin, allowing for a healthier complexion upon repeated consumption. Other supposed positive effects of the jelly includes improving circulation, assisting muscle growth, relieving itching, reducing acne, and kidney restoration.
I think that generally when you mentioned Geylang, it raises some eyebrows but I think over the years the place have cleaned up quite a bit. And yes Geylang had been known for late night supper
depends lah.. sometimes fights take place and u just hv to avoid just like in other areas. these usually happen late at nite yes. if single lady walkin alone at nite, do take extra care like in any area.
Thanks for lively video with great food recommendations. But you didn't show the brothel lorongs (side and back streets) which are what ppl mean when they say Geylang is dangerous especially for ladies. But its been cleaned up over the years already so maybe not so now. Still a nice video but a very incomplete picture of the place.
There is actually a very easy way to open the plastic take away bags without too much trouble. Tug at the length of plastic string that connects the top of the plastic bag and the knot, the knot will undo itself in no time.
When I visited Singapore more than 20 years ago, my family and I stayed in a hotel in geylang. This was before TH-cam days. We found out that it was the red light district because there were some women standing on some street alleys at night. Love the vibe and the foods. Would go out at midnight and try the restos near the hotel. We never felt unsafe. In fact people were very friendly. If I get the chance to visit Singapore again, I will stay in geylang. Better than the city center or downtown where it’s the same boring western fast food and fancy restos.
Geylang is always well known for 2 things; good food & licensed "redlight" establishments. Also, to untie the hot packet of soup, twirl the string the other way around to loosen it ;)
you want those kind of noodles, you can actually find it dry in the instant form, the brand flying wheel has a very similar texture if you cook it right.
I mean, Geylang is/was known for vice activities so yeap! I also heard from my parents that houses with the lanterns usually means that the place is a brothel or something of the sort
if you intend to visit here again, i highly recommend turtle soup(tan ser seng) for the frog porridge(the famous shop is Eminent frog porridge or g7) you should take some of the sauce/gravy the cook the frog with and mix it with the porridge for flavor there are definitely a lot other good restaurants to try at geylang though, such as the original shop of no signboard seafood
Got a trick to opening those kind of soup plastic bags, wind the string in the tightening direction first, then wind it back outwards and it becomes loose! Cheers :)
Keep untying turn by turn the green string of that packet until there is only one easy knot left on the packet. Either clockwise or anti-clockwise as long as the string is untying each turn. 85% chance of success. Try it next time!
@GhibOjisan -> This is a good video to debunk rumours! Geylang is safe till the red flag hours which happens after 10pm till 3am where you need to adventure the middle alleys between Geylang Lorong 14 to Lorong 18. That's where they had red flags activities there. I went there to buy supper and thought to check it out what's the huge crowd along the alley. But afraid if the raid comes, you will be tag along with the red flag crowds even though you are not involve with them. Other than that, Geylang is safe before 10pm and after 6am. Alongside of the road very agreeable that there are alot of good food and cheap stuffs to buy.
My sister is living in geylang since 2018 and I'm walking there at night and shop at groceries. That's when I visited Singapore for the 4th time January to March this year. It's totally safe.
Geylang has some really nice food places, you should try the dimsum there. But I think like most red light districts in the world, it’s always a “risky” place.
Damn. I was hoping Ghib-san would fake an attack and video it. Just to give his fans a heart attack. Anyway, I lived in Geylang for about a year almost 10 years ago. Across the street was a "men's club" (demolished and redeveloped now) and late at night, some nice cars would pull up to the gate, and a sexily-dressed lady would trot out and hop into the car, and away they would go. I was propositioned only once (it must have been a slow night for the "lady of negotiable virtue") while I lived there. I have seen the peddlers of male virility pills. They vanished at the first hint of the authorities. But the REAL danger is to women. Less so for men (unless being propositioned would kill you.) And even for ladies, it may be more of an insult to their dignity - if they are propositioned by a drunk! Women who lived in that area and are NOT ladies of negotiable virtue, say that coming back late at night can be dreadful. They have been propositioned by drunk men who mistake them for working girls. Which may speak to how drunk the men must be, or a commentary on the lady's dress sense. This means that what this video needs is for a woman to wander the streets (or Lorongs) of Geylang, and see if (and how many times) she gets propositioned. And Ghib can video it. :-)
07:09 was one of the restaurant I ate recently! They have very salty vegetables and great white pepper crabs! Clean toliet too. But it’s always crowded. And parking the car takes awhile to find.
To me Geylang gives Johor vibe because of the buildings and everything seems cheaper. There's also high volume of foreigners particularly Malaysian themselves and China. Those sellers you see are street hawkers could be Singaporean or foreigners and depending some have no license to operate or they do have license but just hate the fuss of having a shop so their makeshift shop are easily accessible for them to relocate elsewhere.
I went to Geylang a couple of times and never felt unsafe. Certain Lors might have a sketchy reputation, but by and large, if you avoid them (unless that's why you are there ;) ), it is just a unique area. At no point in Singapore did I ever feel unsafe at all. Walking around London, you are constantly on the defensive - checking people around you, not walking too close to the road, in case some dudes on mopeds grab your phone/bag (it is a thing!). I miss the safety of Singapore - as well as the awesome food.
@@daddymonyet Damn right. I went from London to Singapore and got so used to Singapore and the safety of the place, that visiting London made me very, very aware of feeling nervous all the time. That guy who might bump into you might be trying to dip your wallet - or does someone have a knife to cut bag straps to nick your whole bag...I have been to hawker places in the "heartlands" and there have been some very shady looking uncles with young girls at the table who would disappear with random guys (not hard to work out), but no one bothers you if you dont bother them...
Not surprised to hear this from a foreign media. It is like telling foreigners to avoid going to Nishinari in Osaka, the so called most feared Yazuka slum. But a walk there will quickly dispel all this bias ignorant myth.
The even numbered Lorongs are the brothels. There’s no such thing as legal brothel though, but the authorities enforce it lightly there…prostitution is not illegal here, but it is the foreigners on visitor/tourist pass who get arrested + pimps (it is illegal for anyone to live off earnings/commission from a prostitute). The pill stalls are illegal, they are selling illegal sex drugs from China. They get raid/arrested all the time, but they will set it up again every time… someone else will do it. There are police raids almost every month to get the foreign sex workers, pimps, gangsters and sex drug sellers.
It's dangerous if you get caught by your wife

The only thing dangerous in Geylang is the food... so good
And durian, with spiky skins, yet addictive taste
Geylang has evolved so much! Lots delicious food with long queue outside and cafe and gelato shops to explore! i love Geylang! And been there for supper many times now. It's no longer a red lignt district and is absolutely just as safe as anywhere else in Sg!
The red light district still exist but kind of hidden, spans from lorong 16-20
The frog porridge tastes better if you mix the frog gravy in. Also I recommend putting tororo kombu into porridge. It's totally next level umami.
Red light districts in Singapore are typically under heavier police surveillance. There are also stricter alcohol restrictions there.
Although, I'd say women walking alone in the main streets at night isn't very dangerous anywhere in Singapore.
Will be trying out the Konbu snacks. 😋
Thank you very much Ghib.
Didn't know the lane numbering thing. I learned something today
Gui Ling means long life as turtle live very long, the eatery he went to selling vegetarian type.
First comment 🤣 man it feels illegal to be this early .
As a Singaporean who’s school is in Geylang, I can confirm it seems shady but it isn’t that much of a red light district.
Pro Tip: Pull the string taut and rotate it anti-clockwise around the top of the bag. This will loosen and widen the noose. it will then be easy to open. No need to depend on your fingernails!
To clarify, rotate against the direction of the know to loosen it.
Yummy ban-mian👍
Geylang dangerous?! Maybe it's because the vibe is very different from touristy places. But it's the place to go for yummy food. 😋
I missed the food there since I moved to Punggol almost 18 years ago.
upper boon keng market best for kambing soup
Tongkat ali lah good for u
There are good numbers of interesting restaurants, a lot of religious practices, clubs, karaoke & of course legal brothel houses if you bother to find them at the side lanes for those who need the services.
Tip on opening those soup bags: pull the string and turn in 1 direction until the string comes loose!
Hey. tip for opening the bag. Just pull on the vertical string and it will open easily!
There is another location of Gong He Guan on Upper Cross Street in Chinatown that has a somewhat larger selection. Mango Gui Ling Gao is so great but they don’t have it at Geylang location.
Ohh that banh mi shop is fireeeee 🔥
Glad you got to try it!!!
2:38 this is grass jelly btw
Also come to Boon Lay Jurong Point their Malaysia bulay dried ban mee is very rich and nice
They will only use a plastic bag to hold the soup if you order takeaway. You can then add the soup to the noodle in the comfort of your home. This maintains the good texture of the ban mian.
Glad you had the guilin gao earlier on that has cooling property. Frog leg porridge on the other hand is very heaty
No worries Geylang is safe have been staying here from childhood till now a senior LOL
Geylang is one of the most interesting places in singapore.
haha just herbal jelly, relieve heatiness - don't think it contains any 'turtle' 😂
the original guilinggao was made from ground turtle shells (hence the namesake). now its just from herbs
Geylang is very dangerous, if you cannot control your desire, you may spend more than you expected.
depends lah.. sometimes fights take place and u just hv to avoid just like in other areas. these usually happen late at nite yes. if single lady walkin alone at nite, do take extra care like in any area.
I also heard from my parents that houses with the lanterns usually means that the place is a brothel or something of the sort
if you intend to visit here again, i highly recommend turtle soup(tan ser seng)
for the frog porridge(the famous shop is Eminent frog porridge or g7) you should take some of the sauce/gravy the cook the frog with and mix it with the porridge for flavor
there are definitely a lot other good restaurants to try at geylang though, such as the original shop of no signboard seafood
GuiLing Gao is jello which is a bit bitter. It's meant to be eaten on a hot day, to cool yourself down.
L32 ban mian is super delicious 🤤. I always get the dry version.
I have live this Geylang past 4 years stay continue .watch this video i remember Geylang i understand every location in geylang...
Try it next time!
omg watching u eating ban mian and bahn mi, i have so many recommendations for equally if not better ones in singapore! ugh
And geylang has an initial D themed cafe/bar. My favourite place to hang out!
U are suppose to turn the string around the soup packet.before the knot loosen and u can untie it easily.
Well done.👍👍👍👏👏👏
Geylang is Singapore Red light district ?
How do you not sweat in that humid climate?
Nobody will mug you in Singapore like in the UK 😂
Geylang is just the “HQ” of local thugs, but they generally don’t disturb foreigners.
You should try the dry chilli 🌶️ ban Mian ! Their signature! Better than the soupy version that you tried in this video. Enjoy!
Many delicious foods to try out. From lor 42 down to lor 1.
Not surprised to hear this from a foreign media. It is like telling foreigners to avoid going to Nishinari in Osaka, the so called most feared Yazuka slum. But a walk there will quickly dispel all this bias ignorant myth.
You should try the sauce with the porridge… there’s famous dim sum and wantan mee store too
The even numbered Lorongs are the brothels.
