I have seen a lot of people claim that A7 III is 4K only vs. 7K on the A7 IV, but as you pointed out, that is just not true. The A7 III is a 6K downsampling just as the ZV-E10. And this 6K downsampling is visible if I compare this to my 7R III which is some sort of binning or line-skipping in 4K full-frame mode. First of all, I really appreciate your video, It helped me understand the difference between these two cameras. In fact, I have upgraded A7III to replace A77+Sony 16-50mm F2.8 lens before I saw your video to continue my nightclub photography. As my dear old mother would say, '"different horses for different courses". I've had the A7III for 4 years and as a photographer, the A7IV is not something I'd bother upgrading to. Whilst the bump in resolution might be handy when doing extreme crops, everything else new in the A7IV is video centric and of no interest to me. I've used the video mode exactly once in 4 years, so moving the video button to the top is just annoying. Hopefully this can be just be an option in settings in the A7V rather than forced on everyone. It would be nice to have better articulation than on the A7III screen but a flippy screen? No thanks. If you're a hybrid shooter or videographer, the A7IV is probably a tempting upgrade but "newer" doesn't equal "better" for all use cases. All that glitters is not gold, as sequins stick surprisingly well to a turd.
Keep it Up Good Work & thanks Kensei for making this video. I was Nikon User then i switched to Sony System. I bought A7iv because i have my own reasons to buy this camera. i can say it depends on your need what you want to create???
Colors: HUUUGE Difference, weird bonding and some creepy behavior of "3", and virtually useless slog3 in "3"; 8bit vs 10bit - big difference in my opinion, also... I quite didn't understand comparing dynamic range with a bunch of trees in the background.... can you spot the notice? probably not. I would try something like bright windows in a dark room instead. IS again its a huge upgrade - agreed. Cheers
I use a7c for filming my family and should say its 8bit codec appeared a real problem and dissapointment. Also severe streaking problem in S-Log3 and sometime noticable in S-log2 in a7c. Will need to update to a7-4, or smth else.
th-cam.com/video/UGeR7POG3dQ/w-d-xo.html this streaking of CMOS is what I was talking about. Everytime I need to lift shadows a bit this streaking became too obvious. A7-3 has the same sensor and same problem.
I have the A7III but I'm thinking about purchasing the A7IV just because I want and can afford it. I mostly do street photography and only have one lens, which is the Sony 85mm 1.8. However, if I purchase the A7IV then I will also buy Sony's 35mm 1.4 GM lens, which is currently on sale where I'm located. I could definitely tell the difference between the cameras because there's a clear difference in the colors between two camera. The colors may be more pronounced to me because I'm viewing the video on one of the new Apple Macs that have the mini-LED screens. In addition, the A7IV is slightly sharper than the A7III. Nevertheless, buying one or the other literally comes down to the user's needs. If you're looking at either of these cameras and are just using them to take pictures/video to post on social media or TH-cam, then obviously go with the cheaper camera because the average person isn't going to be able to tell the difference. If you were able to download the raw videos or photos and play around with them in post then you'd probably be able to separate the two cameras. Anyways, great video as I agree with a lot of your points. Keep up the good work.
Just like phones most upgrades are features only. IQ is not noticeably different. Having said that, is the Eye AF better. Flippy Screen, grip, customization etc.? Yes. So, is it worth it? It depends. Can you get equal pay from gigs? Yes. These upgrades are all good but not necessary, yet they may be more enjoyable and make your work (or fun) easier.
I just made my third short movie with my a7iii.. i make dramatic style while i film.. (handheld i mean). I used Cine2 profile and the video looks awsome.. even withouth colour grading.. most of us know that expose the picture is super important.. so aslong i know my camera limits and etc.. i can get so good results.. but yes i am thinkin to have a second camera.. and wise man has the second camera a same brand.. i am still thinking if S5ii would be my choice.. but i have flashes etc.. for sony.. i might take a74 .. anyway great ooint. And to say still this. Many older camera has more moviesh style of a look.. so old is gold haha 😅
i bought A7III not long after A7IV. bought 24 million of which A7IV 37 million (rupiah). What is regrettable is that there is no Flip Up screen. I'm just a hobby, but it's more creative to have a flip up screen, on canon. I still have both brands. Sony's dynamic range alone is very superior.
Another excellent and well balanced review Kensei ! Ergonomically, I think they went backwards with the MK IV (with the exclusion of the bigger grip). I prefer to have the C1 & C2 buttons on the top which is easier for me to access with my index finger (and avoids using the menu), and I prefer to have a dedicated EV wheel with the +/- markings so I can see at a glance what it is currently set to and can be preset without turning the camera on (all quite useful when you need to move fast). Most of the reviews enthusiastically talk about how you can now "customise the EV wheel"... but I'm yet to hear a practical use that would be better than the way it is on the MKIII, justifying the loss of the visual cue, off-line presetting and mechanical hard stop. I don't like "flippy" screens either. I always shoot video in landscape so having to pull the screen out to the side and then rotate it to see it on low or high angles, instead of a simple quick pull is a little annoying and I don't like it extending outside of the body. I don't think I've ever needed shoot stills in portrait at low or high angles and need to angle the rear screen, which only the flip screen can do. The flip screens might be good for selfies (if that's your thing), but for me they are slower to use and are an accident waiting to happen especially for fast 'run and gun' shoots. I don't get the obsession with the new menu. After setting the custom buttons, FN and custom menu I've not needed to navigate the MKIII menu again. It's a total non-issue for me. I go straight to everything I need from a dedicated button (from AF & exposure modes, drive speed, log/Cine profiles, ISO, White balance, 4k or 1080 slow mo...etc.). So if the MK IV had the old menu I wouldn't actually care. I rarely have a problem with the AF on the III for most situations, but sure, the extra stop in low light focus would be good - occasionally, 4k 60, yep that would be nice - occasionally, continuous eye AF... useful occasionally (like if I needed to do an extreme closeup with a 1.4 aperture), 10bit video would be useful - occasionally (especially with poorly lit shots that needed accurate colour masks which are not fun to do with 8bits) .... but none of it added up to be that much of a real world, day-to-day practical difference to me, and I prefer the button layout of the MK III. When added to the little difference in overall IQ (I doubt many would be able to tell the difference between the video and stills from a MK III and IV after a bit of post), it was an easy decision for me. I kept my MKIII.
I get the point the 7iii is good enough and you are used tu it but the new one simply is better. If someone has the money he or she wont regret buying the new one.
@@andersistbesser Actually, I don't think you get the point at all, especially judging by comments you have made elsewhere. An A1 is "simply better" than an A7IV but that doesn't automatically make it a "better" choice of camera for everyone, regardless of how much money they may have. Kensei has done a good job to demonstrate that the difference in image quality is relatively subtle which is also what I observed in my own tests. So, it comes down to how important the other incremental upgrades are; maybe cropped 4k60 has been giving you wet dreams... for others, it might not be so exciting. Neither position is wrong, therefore... If someone has the money and can't decide between a III or IV, I'm confident that he or she won't regret saving some cash by not buying the new one. Either way they will get a superb level of image quality. Like Kensei said, relax...
The A74 is a great camera, I can't understand all the fuss about the FX30, its only £60 cheaper at the moment here in the UK. FX30 seems such a big marketing con to me.
REAL GAME CHANGING FEATURES OF IV IS ONLY FEW. 4:2:2 10BIT INTERNALLY. HIGHER RES PHOTOS, AND ABILITY TO SAVE AND LOAD SETTINGS FROM SAVED FILE (HANDY FOR THOSE WHO SHARE THEIR CAMERAS). THAT'S IT. New menu-nothing better than old, new evf -nice but old is good too, articulating screen-who cares.
Great video, I have a friend, who has the 7IV and towards us the only difference was in the stabilization, exactly as you revealed, but a good gimball is enough for this. Moreover, the owner of the 7IV tested the FX3, and then didn't buy it because the video performance was only slightly better, but he lost the photo compartment. In the photos, is my opinion the 7III better than that of the 7IV, expecilly the skin more natural On the 10 bit issue I did some tests with a 14 bit Canon 5dmk2 with Magic Lantern and with bit depth RAW in situations like sunrise and sunset there is a palpable difference in the color, but I have see the same , in 7SIII + NinjaV in Prores......Big Big file = Better Buality.....................
Comment i was looking for...I have had the a7iii and now the a7iv the a7iv pics are worse how is that so ?!? The a7iv pics dont look any different to a pic taken from a phone but my a7iii pics just had waay more sharpness and better images
Best level headed comparison so far. I have a 2nd hand a7iii. It's my A cam. B cam rn is a zv e10. I'm just starting out doing this professionally, but when I upgrade I'd rather spend a thousand more than the a7iii on a 2nd hand FS7 than on the a7iv.

Thx mate
@@user-hk4qj4du9o Hey! sorry for the late reply. To be honest! I really have no regret getting my a7IV! I do not miss my a7III anymore, and I can say the photo make a big different. I like to zoom in at times on my photos. and the flip screen is a game changer for me. I shoot low vertical nowadays for IG so the flip screen really make it so much easier. Yes 4k 60fps do have crop in, but most of the time I am using my 16-35mm F4 PZ G on my a7IV during my Japan trip recently. So not a big deal for me. As I only shoot B-rolls. Not to mentioned handle stabilisation improvement. I personally don't do professional work aside supporting my company event and personal hobby, little bit of youtube and all that. I have no need for a7RV although I wish I have but not necessary. I will be pairing it with ZV-E1 and that will be my A Cam, and A7IV will be my B-Cam. Hope my respond helps you out.
I had both for months. The a7iv was so far ahead of the III I couldn't keep it any longer. The new menus/autofocus/buttons/hand grip etc. It's a massive improvement. The a7iii feels like a dinosaur.
Look, I understand that you like the A7IV a lot better, but calling the A7III a dinosaur because of a different menu, smaller buttons and hand grip feels like an overstatement. If you could no longer keep the A7III due to the improvements on the A7IV (and I don't think they were massive, especially for photography), you might be suffering from GAS.
@@SneakyCaleb If you specifically need to use the real-time tracking autofocus, then yes, it locks on much better than the A7III, but I disagree that the AF on the A7III is, as a whole, not great. I take pictures of tiny songbirds with the A7III and Tamron 150-500 and I get fantastic results. It also tracks movement well in wide or zone AF, including birds in flight. Eye/face AF is also great. To me the only major difference is the real-time tracking, which I wouldn't use very often anyway. Things like bird eye AF are nice to have, but not deal breakers. The A7IV is newer, so of course it's going to have better features; no argument there. But is it so much better that people should absolutely make the upgrade? That's subjective and debatable. Still, to call the A7III a dinosaur is an exaggeration. I had a Nikon D7000 and waited until the A7IV came out to decide on an upgrade. To me, as someone who doesn't make a living with photography, the price difference between the A7IV and the A7III, which was on sale and included a fast memory card and an extra battery, didn't justify the improvements, so I got the A7III. I don't really do videography, which is what got the biggest upgrades on the A7IV. 4K 24 with 8 bit is plenty for my purposes. I could also have gone for the A7C, since it also has real-time tracking, but the EVF is tiny and the physical buttons are lacking.
@@inmouchar I think we may be on different pages for seriousness, of course the a7iii is still a very capable camera. One thing that I really didn’t like was the menu system, which has also been greatly improved. but of course, you can still get incredible images out of even the original a7

Now? I'm actually really happy with what I have, thank you!
I agree.
If it's only photography, there isn't a lot of pros to upgrade it to A7IV
Keep it Up Good Work & thanks Kensei for making this video. I was Nikon User then i switched to Sony System. I bought A7iv because i have my own reasons to buy this camera. i can say it depends on your need what you want to create???
Glad that you made a good decision for you!!
this just calmed my anxiety thank youuu
That's my job!!
Very powerful & honest content 💪💪
Colors: HUUUGE Difference, weird bonding and some creepy behavior of "3", and virtually useless slog3 in "3"; 8bit vs 10bit - big difference in my opinion, also... I quite didn't understand comparing dynamic range with a bunch of trees in the background.... can you spot the notice? probably not. I would try something like bright windows in a dark room instead. IS again its a huge upgrade - agreed. Cheers
Well, I don't think 8bit vs 10 bit is a huge problem as long as it's for social media.
People won't care about it.
But, thank you for your insight!!
I’m a gh5 owner
I need phantom LUTs too. Someone help please
Flip Screen also better for fotografi, more easy compositions
Love these videos
Thank you!!
Well said!!
Great comparison!! Also switched from A7III to IV, can't agree more with your opinions!!
Good for you!
Hope you enjoy it!!
Muchas gracias, excelente video
Welcome!!
Thanks for tips!!! 🎌
Happy to help!
What about the a7c?
Also great.
It's just I've never used
I just made my third short movie with my a7iii.. i make dramatic style while i film..
Sony's dynamic range alone is very superior.
this was super helpfull thanks :)
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the valuable comment!
Agree.
FX30 doesn't attract me at all..
After watching this video it made me realize that I don't need to rush getting an A7IV, I might just keep my a7iii for a few more years
Yeah, you can!!
Two major difference - AF and Fully articulated Screen
Great video, I have a friend, who has the 7IV and towards us the only difference was in the stabilization, exactly as you revealed, but a good gimball is enough for this.
Moreover, the owner of the 7IV tested the FX3, and then didn't buy it because the video performance was only slightly better, but he lost the photo compartment.
In the photos, is my opinion the 7III better than that of the 7IV, expecilly the skin more natural
On the 10 bit issue I did some tests with a 14 bit Canon 5dmk2 with Magic Lantern and with bit depth RAW in situations like sunrise and sunset there is a palpable difference in the color, but I have see the same , in 7SIII + NinjaV in Prores......Big Big file = Better Buality.....................
Thank you for sharing great insights!!!
Comment i was looking for...I have had the a7iii and now the a7iv the a7iv pics are worse how is that so ?!? The a7iv pics dont look any different to a pic taken from a phone but my a7iii pics just had waay more sharpness and better images
10:52 not “gimbal walk “ if you said instead: “ not ninja walk “ as long as you are a japanese 😅 would be better. Cheers 👏🏻
You speaking english so good but you cant say correctly quality...sounds funny :) Respect!
Many people are saying that lol
I still don't know what is wrong 😂
Best level headed comparison so far. I have a 2nd hand a7iii. It's my A cam. B cam rn is a zv e10. I'm just starting out doing this professionally, but when I upgrade I'd rather spend a thousand more than the a7iii on a 2nd hand FS7 than on the a7iv.
Thanks!!
That's a good another options!
I really want the A7iii but just the A7iv flip screen alone is very tempting. But not worth 1000 extra bucks. :/
Yeah, that's a very tricky thing...
@@KenseiAkatsu I am now trying to figure out what lense would kinda be the most versatile to buy. I wanna make TH-cam videos but also photography. I wanna work a lot with lowlight. It’s kinda difficult watching all these TH-cam videos cause everyone says something different. I feel more lost hahaha.
@@AngelxXxDarken I don`t know if this is still a question in your head, but i would say, just grab a versatile prime lense like the 35mm 1.8 and learn how to shoot. With the time you will notice what you really NEED. Because often it is less than we might think in the beginning...
@@sincosy I ended up getting the Sigma 28-70mm f2,8 DG DN lense. It’s ok for a first lense but I will definitely sell it for a better one as soon as I have some extra cash to upgrade.
@@sincosy do you have any lense recommendations that produce high quality sharp images? I definitely can’t afford having multiple lenses. I need something that is very versatile.
I finally made up my mind to sell off my a7III and get the a7IV instead. I have think long and hard. Compared with my friend's a7IV, you're right. Once you hold on to a7IV, you never want to go back to a7III anymore.
I am paring a7IV with FX30 as cam B.
Good explanation mate, good job!
Man… We need to talk… I own a 7iii and a 7riii and was thinking about your set up being much better. I do both photo and video and the 33mp could be the sweet spot for me. I’m thinking this could be great but at the same time maybe worth waiting for the next a7 that can produce 4K 60p no crop or maybe 120 4K… still seeing lots of people that say it’s not much a big upgrade getting the a74 coming from the 7iii… what do you think??
I'm planning to buy A7m3 in 2024 ❤
If i want to upgrade from a7iii to another model, i can't choose a7iv. Better to go for a7v.... 😊
For you
th-cam.com/users/shorts5hM4k24jQ-s
I had both for months. The a7iv was so far ahead of the III I couldn't keep it any longer. The new menus/autofocus/buttons/hand grip etc. It's a massive improvement. The a7iii feels like a dinosaur.
Button and a grip on A7IV are so comfortable!!
@@inmouchar The auto focus on the a7 iii was never that great honestly. The iv locks on to everything amazing.
One thing that I really didn’t like was the menu system, which has also been greatly improved. but of course, you can still get incredible images out of even the original a7
For me the IS and 10bit are the real selling points!
i have the a7iii but damn the a7iv would be the best camera for me if there wasnt that stupid 4k 60 crop
Bravo 🎉
A7iii or A7Ci is still best value camera for Sony FF period
I can't focus with the a73 so the a74 will make me a better photographer
I like this guy
Me too lol
relax haha that one hit me
The mission was accomplished
Then why are there still monkeys? It’s Absurd!
people wanna see footage, to much face
