I was a taper finisher for years, before I moved trades. I'm back to remodels and painting mostly now. But that comes with a ton of drywall work and repair. I really enjoyed your skimming blade video, because I never had one of those till last year. But we used to call overfill "belly" or bellied. Those humps throw shadow lines like crazy. I appreciate your ability to explain this stuff. That is something I am not great at.... Teaching is hard.
I didn’t expect that. I’ve watched hours and hours of drywalling videos and this one just beat all the years they spent perfecting their craft to explain themselves without showing what you just did in one step. Placing your blade across your work. I think that having auto body experience helps understand this trade.
When you placed the blade over all your work you showed how “if you mess it up” just -check it and redo it..
Live, not one teacher shows if their work is too high and say “here’s me checking my work”.

It always helps with the right tools. You make it look so easy when it's really an "art." Do u work straight across, or do you do in sections like u exhibited? I notice your mud is really soupy. Makes a better application also. You're a sweetheart and really good at what u do! 👍😍

Very good explanation I love the fact that you explained not to hump a joint it's better to leave it thin and do it again or else you will have to coat. Join as a butt joint you're absolutely right how many times have I done that 😂🤣💲👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦😎

I’ve bought a house that needs new paint but ALL of the drywall joints have extreme bumps! Even the ceiling (Existing job, I haven’t started the works yet). I’m looking to do this myself but had little knowledge of how to do this until someone suggested your channel. As this is my home I really want the best finish possible. My question is would doing a massive amount of sanding over the existing mud give a flat surface?
I’ll be doing one room at a time so lots of sanding is doable. I’ll be painting.
You can, it will take a lot of sanding because you'll also be sanding through all the paint that's applied. I would suggest instead of sanding a ton you scrape down the surface and then start floating out all the bad areas with mud. Skimming blades will help a lot - a 24" is the easiest to handle but still a nice size. It will be easier than sanding a ton and give you a better finish too. Definitely start with a small area first to be sure it's something you feel comfortable tackling and you can get a feel for how to do it.

What are some tips to get a consistent depth of mud as you're using a knife? I have a tendency to have too thick at the start and end really thin.

Painter here, just out curiosity why are the knives so dirty? I have trouble with getting a smooth finish with a dirty knives? Even when my knives are clean, I tend to overwork the mud. I like how you leave mud that you need to leave. Good plasters are absolutely awesome. Bad ones leave a huge mess but we aren't all perfect. I guess some of us are. Lol. Keep on keeping on sista.

Can you use hot mud with paper tape? And can you use hot for the prefill and taping ? Or would it be better to prefill with hot mud then tape with an all purpose ?
You can tape with hot mud just make sure everything is bedded correctly. Hot mud doesn't shrink much so it can be really easy to over fill with it.

What is it that causes the tape to bubble?
I’m not as cute as her , lol…but I assume that if u cost over wet , shrinkage pulls the tape from the joint and air gets behind the tape .
No, not enough mud behind the tape.
The tape is paper and the mud is the "glue" that holds it to the wall. If there's not enough mud behind it then there will be pockets of air under the tape which are the blisters. When taping you want to make sure you're using mud that's thin so it spreads evenly underneath the tape and press firmly with your knife embedding the tape in the mud.

Atta Girl, this is the first time I’ve seen someone put their knife into wet mud to show how to check for proper fill , looks like you need a new knife, worn on corners, stainless knives are better. Do you know that there is a good and bad side to a knife? If you know you should let your viewers know.
