As a Liberian who lived in Ghana for 5 years before traveling to the US, I can tell u learning the language is very important. I had to learn twi and as a matter of fact I wrote GA in my BECE and passed with 1. Life is definitely easier once u learn the language

I was amazed to see the tremendous changes the Ghana I left in 2006 has gone through. Very impressive. My classmates from class 6 to Jss and myself did a reunion at Junction mall in Nungua. U can imagine the long chatter and memorable discussions lol

This is why it’s imperative to pass down our mother tongue to the generation born in the 2000s. Our local languages and dialects are being replaced with the English language for various reasons. And this breaks my heart to say the least. I’ve been visiting Ghana for the past 15 years and it gets worse every time I come. Most of the Children don’t speak or understand a mother tongue because their parents aren’t passing it down. I’ve observed two types of parents during my visits. The parents who do it subconsciously. Now these parents haven’t realized that they aren’t communicating to their children in a mother tongue until I brought it to their attention. And than there are the parents who are so proud to say “my child speaks English so well, they even sound like a White person”. These same parents also believe that communicating in any of the local languages is somehow a disadvantage for their children as they are trying to prepare them to travel abroad to further their studies. This is a very disappointing mindset to have as a parent. I was born in the 80s, a time when our parents knew the significance of language. English was taught and spoken at school and my mother tongue was spoken at home. Through language my parents were able to teach me more my Akan culture, traditions, and formalities. I left the country when I was 7 years old. I am proud to say that I can still fluently speak my language after being gone for 30 years! After all these years I managed to hold on to my culture for I am nothing without it! I also take pride in the fact that I am bilingual. I can speak English and Twi. I switch it up depending on who I am communicating with. It has also made things much easier for me in Ghana, especially when it comes to doing business, family matters and all things culture. Parents of today, I challenge you to change this perspective because once our languages become extinct we will lose everything else. Please don’t let this happen. You are right. The Native American languages in America are practically extinct after being forced to speak English for decades .Emergency language revitalization efforts are underway now. The good news is you still have speakers that can set up a language immersion program.
Keep And maintain your African languages bro. Get the children speaking their mothers language or the fathers, preferably both, then English, Chinese etc Young minds can absorb it all. Mother tongue at home, that is of you are lucky to get a nurturing mother/wife/partner, the woman is the foundation of a person's life, it is not sexism to say that without a good woman, there is no home and no furture without a good, strong woman... Fathers can reinforce and safeguard, basically playing the law enforcement, mothers determine the failure or success of the furture. Speak your language at home..

Dear Cassie, At 27, you are wiser than I was at 27. You live by the best principles, such as being kind, but having a balance between kindness and firmness. Your mother raised you well, and the United States has lost one of our best citizens when you left. I owned a store and worked at the store that my husband owned, when we were around your age, and both of our businesses faded. However, before our businesses faded, we made a lot of money in sales. What I learned from those experiences is to keep prices as low as possible. When my husband and I raised our prices, our customers went to our competitors who had lower prices for similar items, and once customers are gone, it’s hard to get them to return without a sale. For example, Walmart is guaranteed to have lower prices than Target. Therefore, most people, who want to buy good products at the lowest prices, will shop at Walmart than Target. i like that perspective on the issue of getting scammed...and actually, any other bad things happening in the world, when it happens in Africa, it gets so dramatized, most often it gets stereotyped to Africans! We are all proud of her and may GOD give her best ideas to take her business global. But the truth is how may Ghanaians in their 20’s to 30’s have the capital to start what she has done? There are teenagers who are breadwinners of their family. The majority of Ghanaian youth will have the advantage she has they will improve and make Ghana a better place to live.
My sister say and say again😢 I’ve been running an online bakery business after Uni/NSS with no start up capital and it’s not easy. It’s much easier for diasporans cos once they change their currency to Ghana cedis it’s a lot and can do a lot. i like that perspective on the issue of getting scammed...and actually, any other bad things happening in the world, when it happens in Africa, it gets so dramatized, most often it gets stereotyped to Africans! But I will tell you that scams, hunger, and all those bad things happen everywhere. It gets intense in some places, not necessarily Africa though!

But the truth is how may Ghanaians in their 20’s to 30’s have the capital to start what she has done?
There are teenagers who are breadwinners of their family. The majority of Ghanaian youth will have the advantage she has they will improve and make Ghana a better place to live.
My sister say and say again😢 I’ve been running an online bakery business after Uni/NSS with no start up capital and it’s not easy. It’s much easier for diasporans cos once they change their currency to Ghana cedis it’s a lot and can do a lot.
Anyways I’m proud of her and love her positive attitude towards running a business in here.
