Recently sold 9 watches and down to 6. I sold a treasured Seiko and tried my best and rebought it 2 weeks later because I tried to move to 5 too early. I keep watching a Hodinkee video with a guy who talks about the perfect watch collection, he torments me, he talks about 5. I am also obsessed with watching vidoes about people who revel in the 3 watch thing. I could do the 3 watches with some lovely watches all. But, it seems that some of my watches have bonded with a deeper part of me and if I sell then I am compelled to rebuy. The Seiko GMT is just such a watch.
September 2024, McMahon fighting his watches temptations for his dear life once again. Coming up with a new unbeatable concept. Acceptance is still not on the menu.
As always, my favorite slice of random watch retrospective discussion and eloquent analysis of an on going obsession. Who else can go from ego bruising eBay low ballers, to Howard Stern having no friends, and an imaginary Seiko Samurai, in one video. Never change Jeff. Never stop. Forget baseball, you should be in a horological hall of fame! Un abbraccio! T.
Well, I convinced myself to believe that if I want to get another watch, a watch in my collection has to be sacrificed. I really thought that this would hold my feet to the fire, to trade watch for watch, no add-ons. So, I sold my SLA23 and had an eye on a Tudor BB 41 Chrono. Then I stumbled upon a Tudor BB GMT Pro that caught my eye. I ended purchasing both. I promised myself I wouldn’t do that again. And here I am back at McMahon’s Watch Addicts Anonymous attempting to medicate the pain of failure 😞
Haven’t even watch this video yet but the title alone tells me one thing: truth…. So I continue on watching your videos realizing I will be a watch addict til the end….
Great storytelling again, so thanks for that. Hovering at 7, granted some skeletons hidden in drawers. Love my Sinn, Marathons, Seiko Tuna but shazaam smitten with the Tutima M2 Seven Seas, the 07 signal orange dial w/kevlar rubber strap. Could it be -- satan...
The perfect dive watch is a 41mm day date dive watch where the day is by the 12 oclock like a Rolex, with cathedral hands, a cushion case, aluminum bezel, lots of lume and is on a tropic strap with a faux lizzard pattern. Maybe an emerald green dial with gilt hands and indices?
So true I'm down to 4 watches now, sold my BB36. Have a Tudor Opaline GMT, Seiko SNE573P1, Tissot PRX 35mm digital and a seiko SUR447. I'm trying to stay at 4 but eyeing up a 5th watch which could be the BB41 Monochrome or the Pelagos 39. I even started looking at the Seiko SSK033 GMT as the 5th watch. My perfect watch would be a Seiko SPB143 or a Rolex Submariner/GMT with a solar movement. Definitely 5 max for me, feels better than 7.
I have a lot more than 6 watches. I enjoy every one of them. I don't know if I could just do five watches. I like too many of them. But I sure could do with less watches than I have.
I usually think of lowballing as asking for less than 80% of the price. 80% of $399 is $319 so I'd say he was right in the ballpark. I had a guy message me 24 times last week about an islander bracelet for a promaster eco drive. he ended up not buying it 'out of spite' because of the way I was pricing it. international buyers can be annoying and entitled.
McMahon, just a tip from an compulsive obsessive fellow watch nerd. When shooting a video like this one, please make sure your watch is centered in the middle of your wrist! I was so distracted as your watch slowly moved downward over the course of the video. I’m constantly checking the position of my watches and it drives me crazy when they are not perfectly aligned.
I don't think this is an addiction..... To me it sounds more like the expression of a personality disorder combined with life stress. Perhaps I am missing something? If five watches make things easier, then that is great; however, will you just replace the one that has sold? Perhaps even with the same watch? I wonder if some purchase/sell watches as a way of avoiding/distracting from stress? I just like my watches and have only sold a few and gifted maybe five. I have over 100 and enjoy them all. I found your video Interesting McMahon. I never thought of the hobby the way you are describing. I wish you all the best in the journey. I hope that maybe you could do some updated detailed reviews of you current collection. Great video, take care.
I have 20+ watches and none of them 'grail' quality. I do enjoy wearing some of them. For many years I had just one watch. What do you do with the excess watches? Do you just post them on eBay? I have been thinking about definitely pulling it back some.
I sell mine on eBay, a real hassle. I used to send mine to Random Rob, but he's inundated with watches and has to be more selective in what he'll sell now.
how lowball is threatened when you are low balled sounds like a killer video especially linking it with emotional regulation. there was research on emotional regulation, that what makes a successful person is their ability to regulate and control their emotion!!! what??
HSS (Hand Suffocation Syndrome)... reason you aren't into bracelets ~ the bracelet going over the hand (both on & off). Same as people who can't deal with putting on (taking off) turtleneck sweaters or hoodies. Fear of death by suffocation. It's a real syndrome (sorta). Thank me later. 👊🏼👊🏼
Jeff, I wasn't even thinking about watches. You're obsessed man, get help. just kidding, you need a titanium spring drive prospex marinemaster 600. I'm a doctor, trust me.
My food texture aversion is soggy bread! Anything that's concept dictates soaking bread in liquid until it's soggy. Chicken N Dumplings, Bread pudding, Tiarra Misue, Cobbler. Etc. Bought my first watch almost 44 years ago. My interest in watches is like my interest in many things. It waxes and wanes, but it never goes away entirely. 🫡

McMahon, it's not your watch journey. It's your Watch Doom.

Not sure what comes next with your videos but this was very interesting and even profound…congratulations!

Please do the lowball video idea. I have had lots of experience with it and would love to hear your signature perspective on it.

What do you think of the Seiko SRPA83 ?
@@randyfaloonkiwi I had it. Too big
@@JeffreyMcMahon I'd love to see a comparison video of the SRPA83 and your Quartz Tuna.

I was bad and put a deposit on a new Hanhart Protector HR 12. Watch #9. Hmmm...
Have you tried Sinn? I just got the EZM 3F... honestly... gorgeous
Never tried one, but I do like some of their toolish models.
My watch potency is adequate.
I've been getting low balled by flippers for my Omega.

150plus
I want to eventually cut down to 3 watches. A gold Patek Calatrava, my Rolex 16613, and my G-Shock GBD H2000.
Dude I’m the same way I can’t wear bracelets! All my watches have straps. And I’ve got waaaaaaaaay more than 6 watches🤣🤣
I have a endgame grail. A 39mm submariner no date with a female end link bracelet. As this is unlikely the game continues.
I’m a member of the Bracelet Hate Club. Can’t stand them tbh
