I used to do scrapbooking years ago when my kids were growing up, and now I have loads of scrapbook paper just sitting there unused. So I have started making sketchbooks out of them. I have 6 of them right now in varying sizes that I am working in. It is a great starting point as most of the pages already have colour and pattern and I don’t feel at all precious about them!
I have 5 sketchbooks. Each for their own purpose, ie: one for collage, one for watercolor, one for mark making and one for acrylic paintings and one for acrylic ink.
@@LauraHornArt Please perdon me to say that I love how you do it. It is well, that way, one get a taste of the different varieties that there are. God forbid, if one loses one sketchbook, the other sketchbooks have got mark makings , splotches, splatters , marks wet in wet, experiments of textures; botanical or geometric abstract elements .
You know what this has done for me? SKETCHBOOK AND NOTEBOOK SHOPPING. YAAAAAAAAY. Obviously my writing practice as well as my art practice needs multiple notebooks and I've been SILLY, just SILLY! by trying to restrict myself to just one for each practice. Well, okay, I have a few different sketchbooks, but I've had it in my head that they are each for different things. THANK YOU for breaking me free!
Happy to hear that the video helped you think differently and encouraged more freedom in your approach. I know that this mindset shift really helped me personally in my own art. Have fun in your new sketchbooks!
For me, you don’t have to think you’re doing too much. I could listen to you a long time. Youre very clear talking & helping us maybe see some new techniques.
I love how approachable and attainable you make creating for people. The more we all discover and embrace our creative spirit, the better world we'll have. I'm sure of it. Thanks for inspiring so many Laura!
Lovely and inspiring. I'm finally getting into a sketchbook practice for myself and your videos are always a great source of inspiration! Thanks, Laura!
I'm glad I'm not the only one working in multiple sketchbooks on a single session. I remember the prompts from your course, they were so fun and helped me to feel free on my sketchbooks. Thank you, Laura ❤
So happy to hear that Paula! Definitely not the only one surrounded by sketchbook pages. I love cycling through my different books and adding bits here and there! Feels very relaxing and low pressure.
I would love you to talk about what value you find in doing a sketchbook. I find I am too busy creating “proper” paintings for exhibitions. I would like to be convinced why I should work in a sketchbook as it looks fun, but I want to understand how it helps you with your bigger works.
That’s a great topic, I do find that my sketchbook practice isn’t as prolific when I’m working on larger pieces or a body of work. I do refer to them though and use them to test out ideas. I’ll pop it on the list for a future video. 🎨✨
It's practice, warm ups and more freeing. Or it stands on it's own. That's all. Just start or keep going on one. It's not complicated or deep. I think "we" artists are too much in our heads at times. 💖 Jmo.
@@maureencoles9914 if the play in a sketch book helps to improve my work I will be all in. That’s sort of what I was asking! 😉 I just find my time is limited and I need to use it wisely.
❤ I had a lot to say but the heart sums it up. Your classes have really helped me to get over the hump and just get back into creating, to have fun again doing something that I love. Thank you.
I enjoyed this so much - it has inspired me to mix materials in the storybook I’m working on. You are also a master of contrast! Lovely video, thank you very much. 👏🏻

Hi Laura- I’m a retired RN turned watercolor artist. I was feeling the need to branch out and try something different- your video has really inspired me and I can’t wait to get started- thank you!
Love this inspirational video ❤Often I am too precious with my sketch books too and this really takes the fun out of spontaneous creativity. I have relaxed over time but more is needed for my creativity to flow. As always, absolutely love your work ❤
Thank you for such a lovely comment! I struggled so much with being precious initially. I relate!! Still creeps in from time to time but I do find these approaches really help. Sometimes we just need that reminder that it is meant to be fun and it's just paint and paper!
I think I need to start a sketchbook. I art journal & while there is an element of play, I think a sketchbook would serve me best for palettes. I have numerous handmade journals that I use for cleaning off tools, stencils etc. The pages are great for doodling on. 😊
Very inspiring! Thank you Laura for your channel. This one has inspired me to dig into my art closet this weekend and play. I’m so looking forward to it. 😊
Laura, thank you for the reminder about the Creative Blend modules! I need to jump back in there and work through these. It's just the right time for me :)
Thank you! I'm glad you found it inspiring. I have a "go for it" approach for a few reasons. Most of my sketchbooks have heavyweight paper, at least 200 gsm, which can handle a multitude of media. I also enjoy using watercolour and ink directly on the paper, as I prefer how they look compared to applying them over gesso. It really depends on your personal preference and how you work. For me, I like to jump straight in without worrying about preparing pages or waiting for them to dry.
Oh my all those blues, I'm in heaven! Do you have a video on your the watercolor paints you use. I would love to see the blues in particular but a general video of your faves if you have one.
Daniel Smiths are my first pick! However, in the video I did recently sharing a new sketchbook I also share my Kuratake watercolour set and those were fun as well! That video is here: th-cam.com/video/eirJ7ingwwA/w-d-xo.html In this video: th-cam.com/video/XLI1lkECZS0/w-d-xo.html I am doing a watercolour tutorial with some of my favourite watercolour supplies 😊
I think your art is beautiful and original! Referring to what someone mentioned in the above comments, could you use those beautiful pieces in your sketch books to sell them? They are just so amazing, I would love to be able to find them printed somewhere. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It's not always easy to repeat something from your sketchbook to a larger stand-alone piece. Thank you!
Thank you for such kind words from my art. It is possible to scan artwork when it is on a single page, but double-page spreads are tricky. I actually tried it recently and wasn't happy with the results. I do plan on taking some of these ideas onto loose sheets of paper and creating work that will be for sale and also more suitable for prints. I agree though, it is very difficult to replicate what comes through in the sanctuary of a sketchbook!
I use them for reference, but rarely try and replicate something exactly. I am more likely to just pull a few elements from the sketchbooks e.g. a colour palette, image, mark-making style etc and then combine it with whatever comes through in a fairly intuitive process.
Hi Linda, glad you enjoyed the video. It's the same program. It's now available as a self-paced course for anyone to join. You have lifetime access so you can dive in at any time, no need to purchase!
I’m struggling between the practice aspect and the deep desire of wanting to ultimately end up with something worth framing and displaying in my home. I know practice is important and we should simply enjoy the journey but then I produce stacks and stacks of papers (most of which I love and cannot part with because they become part of me). This can create a creative block for me. So on that note, I must ask, what do you do with all the painted papers you create? Do find places to stash them away, do you display them, or do give them away? Please don’t tell me you dispose of them….I simply can’t handle knowing that, lol. Please share this part of your process with us.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. For me, sketchbook work is an integral part of the creative process and eventually leads to pieces that can be displayed or sold. I usually spend a month or so in my sketchbook before moving onto different substrates, which helps keep the loose paper clutter at bay. The loose works I create as practice often end up in folders for reference. If a piece isn't quite what I hoped for, I might repurpose it for collage, and occasionally, I do let go and throw some pieces out. Recently, I've started turning my practice scraps into handmade sketchbooks-the perfect solution imo! Keep in mind, there's no right or wrong approach. If you're looking to display pieces, working on loose paper might be the best option for you. For storage, I find that Alex drawers from IKEA are great for organising completed paper pieces.
