Something EXCITING in a few weeks! DREW is coming back on the channel to help me with a small private job! P.s. There's a lot of toothing out in this video (this is because we've been told to do so), especially on the back of the house. Those with a keen eye will see that the timber framers left the window cills right down at finished floor level ( 0.27 ) to allow access for window fitters and the plasters/plasterboards. (This can also be seen in my previous video on this job). As we started work on the lintels they put one side in for us and the next day did the other side. so before everyone comments, I've already answered it for you 😉 Have a great week, and keep your eye out for the return on DREW🎉
This is why so many lads refuse to touch new builds. They're often so badly run, and it's like they're incapable of running a bath, let alone a building site. I've just left the industry and gone into manufacturing. I was a drainage engineer on new builds around the northwest UK. Some of the stuff you'd see would be laughable. Had a plumber leave his first year apprentice on site to plumb up an entire property. Poor lad was asking me what to do like I'd have a clue. Another time plasterers turned up and the footings had only just been poured. The laughable thing was the plasterers sat in the break hut all day and got paid. I know the issue. Site managers used to be time served tradesmen who left the tools for a desk job. However, they knew how an entire site functioned and operated. They understood the schedule of works and when each trade was needed. Nowadays, the number of site managers you see in their early 20s on a graduate scheme who don't know what the fuck is going on. That mixed with this throw it up attitude and price work. It's a joke !
I had it on a sidewalk job it was all fiber mesh broom finish the young guy didn't know that those hairs that come up on your broom it will go rub off later on he wanted me to do it over again I told him I don't think so I've been doing this longer than you you are old I would just make my check up and I'll move on to another job
indeed. That is one of the reasons why I retrained as an electrician. As a bricklayer we were the first and the last to arrive from the construction site. here in Belgium things are not that different from yours. So I certainly understand what you are saying here. it is sometimes a crazy house in the construction sector. Everyone does their own thing. without even consulting each other. I mean the different contractors! it can all go so easily, but no. rather make things difficult and only look at their own. And sometimes the boss expects that too. That we only have to look at our work. crazy, right?
As a scaffolder of 40 + years, that is about the worst service from a company I have seen, timber framed houses are a pain but , site management and scaffold supervisor should have all dims sorted at planing stage
From a roofer that works on Scottish building sites, that is standard procedure from scaffolders, meant to make your job easier, ends up making it harder.
On timber frame houses after the roof’s done the builder should pay the scaffolders to strip it back down to the first lift and then raise each lift after the bricky’s are finished like usual
I’ve just left the industry after 40 years I’d just had enough the whole industry is broken there was no way I was spending my last working years in absolute chaos and misery, the whole new build industry is dis functional.
Fair play mate for battling on, i am now retired after a life time in construction, i would have walked away, i have worked in other countries and have to say in the UK trades seem to work against each other, Not all the time i have worked with some amazing guys but it does happen, love your work and vids.
We had the same problems on timber frames a few years back and walked off after 6 weeks. Constantly banging head against scaffolding clips, Scaffolding all over the shop and constantly getting told to get over it then been told to keep cavity 50mm true to thentimber frame even if it meant building our brickwork out of plum. Im some places the frames were 25/30mm out of plumb we couldn’t be chewed with them and walked
Same on our sites. Keep the cavity 50mm for the inspector. House is built like it's subsiding. Then you get that knob head "absolutely shocking" snagger go over it and blame the brickies.
Although the working conditions you’re being faced with have been a challenge to say the least, it hasn’t stopped you producing another quality video! One of the best to date. 👍🏻
Izzy, that scaffolding is not only a PITA and also dangerous. Our site safety officer would never allow it. Your site management is hindering rather than helping trades to do their jobs safely and efficiently. By the way, tube scaffolding is very rarely used in Ireland. It's all quick stage which gives good access for all trades. Love the videos and their presentation. It's interesting watching how sites work in the UK. Always remember "A happy site is a productive site".
Like i said in one of your previous videos mate, if the roof is on and finished. Scaffold should be stripped and put back up suiting your lifts to soffit/gables. Some developers think it's more cost involved but there really isn't a sufficient amount of difference in price. You get a far better job, no braces & poles slowing you down! A happier bricklayer and no banging head on those clips! Have a word with who's running the shitshow haha
you are a joy to watch. As long as you keep doing what you do nothing will change, is all against health and safety for safe lifting and yet we all just carry on regardless and as long as we do things will never change.
Re your soldiers ... would you not be better to knock the corner off first ... I'm not a bricky (retired chippy) just the way I would approach the job ... in an ideal situation the bottom of the brick wants to be the same angle as the tray ... if it was wood I would set up the chop saw and cut them all first ... I remember you doing something similar with circle window
What a pain in the arse setup Izzy. You have had to be creative on some of them parts and I'm glad you are getting and using advice from your peers. Another great video my friend thanks and watch those poles
Carpenter & Joiner for 37yrs here & I have lost count of how many times Scaffolders just build some random load of whatever they like instead of what they was asked to do. I have had them even build the scaffold off the roof that was being removed for dormers & loft conversions. Had them put the lift in 6 foot down from the wall plate despite being given a height. The list just goes on & on & don't get me started on the amount of firms who leave traps or things not bolted up tight. Poles hanging over what you got to build etc etc.
As you are starting to look like a young Freddy mercury with that moustache, you should walk off site singing “another one bites the dust” 😂 Great videos, great attitude and great work 🧱 👍🏻
It doesn’t help when using the wrong kind of scaffolding Tube and fit ain’t suitable for kit houses , having to stretch up to build to the next lift then a few nose bleed courses. Better off with cup lock or quick stage , there you can lift or lower the hop ups , makes life a hell of a lot easier
Same old problem it doesn’t matter if your getting a £1000 per thousand brick if you’re putting cavity trays everywhere which all takes time and then to top it all you can hardly lay bricks because of everything in the way😤😤
Izzy mate you are better than this shower. You are good enough to be picking what work ya want to do not settling for this, personally I would never step foot on a timber frame site. Ya know it's bad if your not happy your enthusiasm for the job is rarely seen anyway good luck with the job and all the best 👍🏻
i couldnt see where you measured or marked so that the soldiers lined up, not a half at the end... when I DIYed something similar i measured it, divided it on phone calculator to 2 decimals, wrote down length, stored as memory, added memory, wrote down lergth, added memory, etc, so i had lengths from one end (not width of each brick) , i.e 11.2 22.4 33.6 44.8 56.0 etc whcih got rid of the problem of small errors compounding, if you see what i mean
As for your comment about new builds izzy... I spent 2 years snagging new build kitchens. I wish it was just down to scaff making them poor quality. Sadly though mate it's the building process that makes them shoddy. These companies like Taylor whimpy, redrow etc, they are trying to turn house building into a mass produced, conveyor belt type of operation! Cheap materials and skilled men being forced to skimp on quality for pure speed is what makes them naff quality. They are literally thrown up and the only difference between the 400k houses and the 800k to 1mil plots besides the footprint of the building, is that the cheaper houses have the cheap kitchen that symphony or wren supply, 15mm cabs, wrapped doors and shitty worktops, while the 1mil houses have symphony or wrens higher end kitchen, 18mm cabs with painted doors, cornice and pelmet and then stone worktops. The 1mil plots are still made from the same cheap crap but they get a few grand more spent on the kitchens and bathrooms. Why anyone would pay 1 mil for the 5 bed houses when they are just as rough and cheaply built as even the social houses they are forced to build is beyond me. I understand someone wanting a brand new house as they think it's all new and they won't have to do anything but move in and enjoy. Yet when they do they end up with a 400 point snagging list, a garden of fenced off clay and rubble unless they pay a fortune extra to have topsoil and turf rolled over the wasteland! They have crappy, thrown together underfloor heating and the fit and finish is shocking cuz the tilers are forced to tile kitchens and wet rooms at an alarming pace just to make a half decent living cuz they provide tons of work but pay poorly. Many people are oblivious to poor work and just see new tiles and are happy. I have worked in 1mil to 1.4 mil new builds in Cheltenham, where the kitchen tiles had tiles 3mm higher than the tile next to it, silicone beads of 10mm hiding cuts that were nowhere near and toilets that were held in place with nothing more than clear silicone squeezed on the ground and the toilet sat on top. It showed me just how strong silicone grabs but for 1.4mil, id quite like to have my toilet screwed to the floor as it was designed to be! I truly would advise against buying a new build from any of the large, mass production companies even like redrow, who do build nicer than most others but are just as guilty as the cheaper companies when it comes to speed of build. I've literally seen expansion joints that are faked. There's a line of silicone down the wall but no foam held in a joint. Whether that was a one off where the bricky missed it so they bodged it in order to not have to take apart and rebuild so they just threw a bead of silicone to make it look done or whether it's common, time saving bs they push their lads to do in order to save time on builds I don't know. All I know is a house was passed off and sold, that didn't meet regs or its own.design criteria and on top of discovering that and telling the new owner, they had a brand new kitchen with 37 major and 14 minor faults that ranged from total worktop replacement due to deep scratches in the worktops and the fridge freezer housing being 42mm from level at the top so it looked slanted over at the top, down to chips in painted doors that rather than replacement doors, they sent a bottle of blue touch up paint, which looked awful no matter how hard I tried to touch up paint chips. That buyer went to the local paper and told them their story and threatened legal action due to the awful state of her brand new, very expensive home. I could write horror stories for days after 2 years spent snagging new builds. Never work for these companies if you value your sanity or reputation cuz you will be forced to rush and cut corners, compromise your standards or be let go because they don't want perfect at any cost, they want 5 houses built for the cost and time it should take to build one and the faster you work, the harder they will push for you to match that pace. That, along with plastic canopy rooves and plastic chimneys that do nothing at all but look awful, the cheapest materials and fittings they can find are the reason they are awful quality n won't last 30 years!
It's easy to blame the Scaffold firm , but that's the issue when trying to use the scaffold for multiple purposes-Timber Frame, Brickwork, and Roofing. After the Timber Frame goes up, the scaffold should be taken down and re-erected for Brickwork, not just altered. When clients want the scaffold for Decoration and Roofing, no one wants to pay for the alterations to the top lift.
Great video again and some good ole shit kicking tunes, on the new build stuff you couldn't give me a new built house made of all that timber even if you built it m8, just not solid enough for my liking, as for that scaffolding it looks like children erected it. Looking forward to seeing the video with Drew
Hi well done you keep it up you are doing a great job and having fun making some brilliant videos Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall churckery up the walsall
Interesting issues, idk is it a small newish developer’s site? Lot about now fuelled up by loose bridging loans 😂 Sills were nice tho. Brick soldiers should make an attractive finish.
Micky mouse site managers who can’t hang a tv on the wall they have no business being in construction.i got red carded last week for asking to scrape the roads into site apparently i was aggressive 😂
Not going to lie, I am getting wound up just watching this!😡 That scaffold is beyond ridiculous. Being on price work as well, I would be going mental!😂
Good work mate timber frames are shit always smashing head against scaffolding scaffolding always too short on one end on gables where we are they sound a nightmare ur scafs j mean don’t they no that u have to build that bit maybe they think u got extra long arms 😂
I'm a new sub Izzy. Been watching your vids and I'm impressed with your work pal. Can I just ask... how old are you mate? Also, how long have you been going alone and how long is it since you finished your apprenticeship and were classed a qualified bricky? I only ask as you look and seem pretty young. I'm guessing you're 25 to 28 or so? Impressive to see someone on the younger side who is clued up and takes so much pride in their work. Sadly I see many younger guys who have more of a no fks given attitude to work. I'm not a brick layer, I'm an all rounder with zero quals but years of experience. I love brick laying though and even though I don't do much and certainly not often, thanks to guys like you and Collison, I have learned a lot and my laying has come on massively. I wish my parents had set me up with a real builder when I was 15 rather than a cash in hand job with a roofer they knew. I learned roofing on the job but never went to college as I was used as cheap labour but because I learned fast and had skills, the guy let me tile. There was just him and myself and because I was a solid grafter, I'd load a roof out carrying up ladders, no bumpas or lifts, faster than he could tile it. So I'd get done fast as possible so I could jump on tiling and running up gables, valleys and hips etc. I just wish my folks bothered to take the time to set me in a proper career, I would have loved to have done an apprenticeship as a bricky and got qualified. I really do enjoy laying and at 42 and now subbing to a roofing contractor, one who still expects his guys to load rooves without a bumpa half the time, I'm amazed I can still do it at my age. It annoys me that the serious graft I put in with roofing, I could be putting the level of graft I'm capable of into laying bricks! My body would be less broken and I could be taking serious money smashing out 500 plus bricks a day and still go home less tired than I do now lol. I'm seriously envious of your career mate and I wish you all the luck in the world bro. If you ever want a very capable, fast learning, serious grafting and 100% reliable 40 year old apprentice, let me know! I'm from the West Midlands, an hour or so from Derby and willing to relocate haha! So ya know.... hit me up if you want a solid employee who loves building, never moans about early mornings, late nights and happy to work 7 days a week and who takes absolute pride in any work they turn out because I have always refused to put my name to shite work. I'd rather take my work apart than leave work that is wrong or ugly. In the building trade all you have is your name and I have always refused to damage mine. I'm totally serious btw. If you need a skilled guy who can lay a level brick and build corners, all self taught and while I don't know anywhere near what is needed to be called a competent bricky, I'm capable of running a line or building a corner. I can setup profiles and use them, I can toothe in and anything I can't do, I soon can cuz I absorb everything I see and hear! I can also fit kitchens, mitre worktops, do plumbing although not gas and as stated, I'm a solid roof tiler / slater! I come from a family of mechanics and for 3 years was pushed to be a mechanic, so when your van needs servicing or pads, packs up or needs parts changing, in a useful guy to have around! I have built every PC I've ever owned as I loved pc gaming over consoles so for a social media guy, I'm useful there too! I could be the best employee you never looked for!
Want 1st class work done but with shit circumstances for us to work omg imagine a chippy do cladding on scaffolding we have they get 1st class treatment red carpet A1 scaffolding lol
Bin the existing scaffolding company and get a new team in surely? Do the bosses at your company care or is it a case of “we don’t care about the birthing pains, we just want to see the baby!”
Im sorry to any scaffolders, but a fair few either do not care or are brain dead. Gives the trade a bad name. Do they not have common sense or do they believe brickys can levitate?
Get out there and build for UK people who can not afford to buy only take a good builder with cash to start building homes to rent stop greedy company's buying land building home to sell get to your council and help them build stop building bloody brick walls
Izzy I see and feel your frustration mate…. Do the scaffolder’s know what they’re doing ! I’d share the frustration when there invoice arrives I’d sit on it for a month, then I’d seriously under pay the invoice at least three times 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why the Insulation overload? Insulating homes is a key way to reduce carbon emissions and work towards a 'net zero future' AKA 'Climate Change' the artist formerly known as 'Global Warming' and now its a 'Climate Emergency' The rules aren’t meant to make sense. They are meant to be obeyed. The more contradictory & illogical the regulations become, the more your compliance is valued. If you can force a person to abandon their judgment in favour of your own, you have total control over their reality.
Why the hell are putting up with such crap workmenship the people who you are working for should get there act together those scaffolders must have not done on these type of houses
I was under the impression that scaffolding was to allow you to work safely at height... Not try and cave your head in every time you reach for a trowel full of muck! Sorry but that scaff isn't even funny, if I was paying them, I'd insist that was redone correctly and i would tell them if they don't know how to do it correctly, to not even try for the 4th time, just get their bars and boards and bounce so I could get a firm in that understands how to stage it so that walls can be built. The time and money you will lose by being slowed to a crawl because its impossible to set up a line and lay bricks without having to dance around that monstrosity is painful to watch and totally unfair. We have all worked on less than perfect scaff and we have all worked on perfect scaff. That scaff is buried so far in the shit end of the scale, I'd actually call it unusable. If I owned that scaff company, I'd be so embarrassed by my lads work that I'd have to wave the cost. That is putting lives at risk for anyone brave enough to attempt to work off it. Truly disgraceful, incompetent and shameful! What a joke.
Same old problem it doesn’t matter if your getting a £1000 per thousand brick if you’re putting cavity trays everywhere which all takes time and then to top it all you can hardly lay bricks because of everything in the way😤😤

I feel for you brother...that scaffold is a disgrace.....it's no wonder some price work houses end up looking a mess 😢✌️👊
Cracking advice I do the same on Soldiers and profiles on top when it works is the way forward 👍🏻👍🏻
at 14:22 is that mortar somehow already cracked or am i cracked?
My hats off to you working under conditions like that 👍, any links for the tunes your playing on the vids ?.
EVERYTHING is quantity rather than quality these days. That used to be a tightrope balance not too long ago. Those days are gone, at least for now.
Everything, down to the materials we use, is now about quantity. Time = money and it shows. Maybe things will begin to change
Tell the side manager that there plugs need putting on the scaffold bolts, and the scaffold tubes should be capped off mate
Well done mate

Hate working under scaffold, luckily I only ever have to on a gable end, 13:35 made me stressed just laying on the sofa 😂
im glad im retired and dont have to put up with crap like that from scaffold companys etc
It never changes this game, and it seems to be getting worse ,conditions bricklayers are expected and do work in are atrocious
It doesn't surprise me what they've done , seen it all before . After all , its a semi skilled trade , at least it was in my day ! . . . . 😊
No clerk of works
Sadly all on the house builders ~ payroll ie to turn a blind eye to shoddy work.
see - You tubers for details
List below 👇😮😂
Once again the scaffolders aren’t able to use the 2 brain cells they have what a shame
Great video again and some good ole shit kicking tunes, on the new build stuff you couldn't give me a new built house made of all that timber even if you built it m8, just not solid enough for my liking, as for that scaffolding it looks like children erected it. Looking forward to seeing the video with Drew
14:30 that looks well frustrating! Bloody scaffolders! A video full of SOLUTIONS NOT PROBLEMS 😂
Profits over quality
Nightmare always hated timber frames 😬
Didn't know you could drive a telehandler on a forklift ticket
He went through training in the earlier vlogs to obtain the ticket

Scofold is to keep scofolders in a job they don’t care if it’s not fit for purpose.
As long as you keep building on shite scaffolds like that .they will keep putting them up like that.
O dear poor izzy having to work like that have the scaffolders got no commonsense see you in the next one simon
I could be the best employee you never looked for!
im on timber frames at the moment. shite mate.
Want 1st class work done but with shit circumstances for us to work omg imagine a chippy do cladding on scaffolding we have they get 1st class treatment red carpet A1 scaffolding lol
The scaffolding is a joke, I really feel for you, especially on a price. Just mad scaffolding with timber frame
What an absolute joke having to work under that scaffold, surely the site manager can't let you work like that
oioi izzy
It ain't easy to be positive when dealing with such hurdles, still you're smiling at the ed of the day, that's Izzy for sure 😉
Use a smaller trowel, that one looks too big and unwieldy for you.
This is the problem with modern life through out the Western world. We are in decline and humans are on the way out.
Bin the existing scaffolding company and get a new team in surely? Do the bosses at your company care or is it a case of “we don’t care about the birthing pains, we just want to see the baby!”
Thats why there scaffolders all there good for is turning bolts 😂
Do you thing the old fashioned scaffold is right for this job
Mate timber frame scaffolding is the worst and most frustrating scaffold you will ever work on 😡 not fit for purpose 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Im sorry to any scaffolders, but a fair few either do not care or are brain dead. Gives the trade a bad name. Do they not have common sense or do they believe brickys can levitate?
Imagine Labour wanting a million homes built lol. Scaffolding is terrible and back braking to get round.
It’s impossible too make money working like that
Mate you shouldn’t have to work with the dangerous cowboy scaffolding, absolute disgrace, really think you’re producing miracles in these conditions
Ok for health and safety but not fit for purpose
Your trowel is far to big lad
I bet you don’t volunteer for timber framed houses.
Get out there and build for UK people who can not afford to buy only take a good builder with cash to start building homes to rent stop greedy company's buying land building home to sell get to your council and help them build stop building bloody brick walls
That scaffold is shit and dangerous
scaffolders are useless 60% of the time..
Scaffolding is wank.!!!!
Izzy I see and feel your frustration mate…. Do the scaffolder’s know what they’re doing ! I’d share the frustration when there invoice arrives I’d sit on it for a month, then I’d seriously under pay the invoice at least three times 🤣🤣🤣🤣
👍🧱
Why the Insulation overload?
Insulating homes is a key way to reduce carbon emissions and work towards a 'net zero future' AKA 'Climate Change' the artist formerly known as 'Global Warming' and now its a 'Climate Emergency'
The rules aren’t meant to make sense.
That scaffold work is atrocious,It’s an embarrassment to the trade…sack the lot of them…
Move on from this frustration mate and have a great weekend with your family and friends….🍺🎉💥🔨⚒️👍🫵🏻
Half the problems is that Scafold . Nose bleeds all the time. 🫣
