  • In this video I have an honest and open chat with Art Licensing Agent Brenda Manley. Brenda is the founder of Brenda Manley Designs, an art agency that licenses and sells art for products.
    Licensing your artwork is one of the paths available to you to make money as a surface pattern designer. Many artists who choose to license their artwork will sign on with an art licensing agency.
    When we’re talking about art licensing agencies, it’s important to point out that not all agencies operate the same way - their business models can vary quite a bit. That’s why I’m excited to bring you this interview with Brenda Manley who runs a very successful boutique art licensing agency.
    We chat about how her agency is unique, art styles that are popular in the market, what she looks for in new artists to represent, how community has made a huge difference in her business, and lots of great advice and inside info on her agency for illustrators and surface designers looking to license their work.

    Lovely interview, thank you Elizabeth. I have the honour of being one of Brenda's artists and it really is a two-way relationship. I think anyone who signs up with an agent with the belief that the agent now works for them, or that they now work for the agent, is mistaken. You both have to work with each other to make it a success. This might be different for larger agencies, but it's definitely one of the benefits of a smaller 'boutique' agency in my opinion.
    I knew what was coming when she starting talking about Christmas designs and said it with her ... "always do a red and green version too". I made the mistake of not doing this once and had to recolour multiple merged layers in a big collection for a client. It took me about a week. Clearly I should have listened to her! I am also the Brit who begrudgingly creates 4th of July artwork which cracks her up every time!! 🤣

    I wanted to listen to the bonus question, so I completed the toolkit signup to do so, but I did not see the rest of her video. I was very interested in what she had to say there at the end. Hopefully, there is a link somewhere that I can use to listen to it. Thank you.

    Great info.. curious to know what design elements make for a widely favored print?

    • @ElizabethSilver
      @ElizabethSilver  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think there is one set answer on this, it really depends what product category, what client etc. Flowers tend to be popular in most categories, but also hard to stand out with flowers because everyone does them.

    Thank you for another great video Elizabeth. I really appreciate the information you share. I have to say I was shocked at how much of a percentage the agent gets,😮 did she say she keeps 40%? In addition to the artist paying her an annual fee? 😮😅

    • @ElizabethSilver
      @ElizabethSilver  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, that's typical, licensing agents can take between 30-50% depending.

    i heard "up front fees" was a huge red flag

    • @ElizabethSilver
      @ElizabethSilver  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends...usually upfront fees are offset by lower percentage given of your royalties, but it's always good practice to ask about the potential fees and learn as much as you can.
