Compressor Oil Return and Oil Failure Controls

- Compressor oil return in an air conditioning or refrigeration system is super important. Oil failure controls are implemented on larger semi hermetic compressors that utilize oil pumps to ensure the compressor is receiving the oil it needs to function. Mechanical oil failure controls are very simple in the way they operate but do confuse some technicians. I have seen too many oil failure controls get misdiagnosed and replaced when in fact it was an oil return issue causing the problem.

Hopefully this info helps!
That helps like hell. Thank you lol
Yeah man this helped a lot. My teacher is a smart guy but for whatever reason I couldn't understand it.
here studying for my 313a exam, love the podcast and ig btw, great info for any up and comers
I appreciate that Josh!
Thanks for making this video. It is highly informative. I think it is the only one on TH-cam that explains compressor oil control system.
Keep up the great work. You're one of the view people I watch to learn new area and material as well as relearning things I've forgotten. Thank you!
Perfect!!! Great video. Pipers don’t always know the correct way to do this. And need to look at the manufactures directions
Appreciate it!
Thank you for the video. Have you seen one where the oil filter sleeve is turned up instead of down? Could this cause the oil pressure to trip? Thanks again!
Fantastic video
Absolutely love the real world explanations on the board your doing.
You’ve really stepped it up from the usual watch me fix something videos everyone’s doing.
Thanks for all your effort
I like teaching and I don't do many service calls so figured I'd try this. I appreciate it!
When commissioning a new compressor with oil at the right level in the sight glass, will oil level go lower on the sight glass after compressor start up?, due oil getting trapped in the piping? and how long will take for the oil movement to stabilize? and how to estimate the additional oil needed to add to the compressor?
Waiting for the reply
Hi, it's not easy to determine the return time nor the quantity of oil needed. It depends on compressor's size, circuit length, size of condenser, size of evaporator, type of application etc. Generally speaking on condesing units, keep track the compressor's oil sight glass, and add if its starts going around at 1/4. Regarding quantity it all depends on the size of the application. In racks things are easier as you usually have extra safety features like oil level sensors and big oil reservouers to counter the oil loss.
What power do you get on M when the oil pressure switch trip?
What would happen if you switch the orientation of the cap tubes ? Would the control still work ?
it's been a years working with a chill water system I am hospital tech it's been great you just have to learn fast open your mind
Open mind is key!
I mean a year
Excellent video. Point well explained. Thumbs up
Thank you!
Great video really helps with the way you explain what is going on, I learned something new today.
When you learn it's a good day!
In the case of the condenser being below or on same level of evap a trap is not needed correct?
too much velocity, like an oversized txv or adjusted wide open, might blow the oil out of the crankcase, hopefully this helps.thanks for sharing.
Great job! What are your thoughts if the condensing unit is located below the evaporator. Do you need any traps or an inverted?
Not sure if I've ever seen a trapped liquid line tbh. But yes an inverted trap on the evap outlet is a good call.
how mutc the the normal working oressure with R404a to the oil low and hi side? how much is the normal different between them? thanks !!!!!!
How long does it take for the oil to go through the system and return to the compressor crankcase?
Oil is constantly leaving and returning, so there no real waiting
Sir, can you help me. How to connect properly mp55 oil pressure switch. where those two pipe to be connected.
Thank you for this training.
Please do a training on Trans-critical and Sub Critical CO2 installation.
My pleasure, I'm not into CO2 but you can get some knowledge here on my podcast. Please subscribe if you enjoy anchor.fm/hvacknowitall/episodes/Compressor-Overheat--Liquid-Injection-and-CO2-Refrigerant-wDon-Gillis-enm8lo
this style of video is great! You mentioned sequencers, could you make a similar video format on the topic of sequencers in electric heaters?
Im having an issue that i beleve is an electrical issue but cant figure out. Newly installed copleland compressor keeps tripping oil, im taking pressure from pump and crank case get 48-52 psi, sight glass on oil float is 3/4 screens are clean on float and compressoras but switch tripps about 1 1/2 mins after start up
The control works off pressure difference, what's the crankcase pressure and whats the control set for?
@HVAC Know It All its on a rack crank case goes from 39-55psi oil pump goes anywhere from 90-115psi I'm currently on the third oil switch it's a new compressor, there were a lot of shorts in the control voltage it's an old site and wiring was never updated. But can't find any electrical issue going to the switch and since I've installed this switch and no longer trips after the time delay it runs for hours while I'm on site and then it trips when I'm not there , im heading back again today to pretty much just watch it and see if pressure ever drops because the whole time I'm there I'll watch it and my oil pressure stays around 49 to 52 differential
@HVAC Know It All I feel like I'm at a loss on this one. Which is why I'm commenting on a TH-cam video I tried talking to Copeland tech support and my supervisors and no one really has any idea of what would be causing it. Currently have no circuits flooding back this is a weird rack though as my three low temp compressors discharge into the three medium temperatures compressor suction header and there's a de superheat valve that shoots liquid into the discharge line of the low temp compressors to cool it off. the compressor that keeps tripping oil is on the medium temp . I thought it might be issue with the de superheat valve I adjusted it a few times it's currently set to open if the line raises above 80°
@HVAC Know It All I got it, it was electrical, and there is a separate relay for head fans/oil pressure switch shares voltage with head fan. The relay is sticking randomly and sending power to oil switch with the compressor off. Damn this call kicked my ass
Amazing explanation. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome
Thank you this cleared up a lot for me !
Great video! Learned a lot!
Thank you Jeremy!
This is one of those videos where: if you understand what's being said, you don't need to watch it.
Ty Branaman and Greyfurnaceman are HVAC-teaching examples.
Much love!

Thanks for the effort, we all benefit, but teaching skills need work.
I see HVAC Technician is working on his teaching technique too.
All good.
@@HVACKnowItAll
It was better the 2nd time around. TG for youtube rewind.
Question: if something is wrong with the oil pump, can it be changed without replacing the whole compressor?
@@hg2. yes it can!
@@HVACKnowItAll
3rd time around:
It's getting better, but still feels like newbie blanks need filling in.
... Maybe some arrows to show flow direction, and to/from boxes to show where stuff is going to and coming from.
thank you for this video, keep it up learned a lot from it.
You're welcome and I'll try haha!
Another great and educational video...👍👍👍
Thank you!
Can you help me with this situation : my 4 screw compressor rack running well with 3 compressors but last compressor to start running does not get oil. In sightglass bubbles are seen and it gets a low oil flow alarm. what do you think reason could be ?
Look at oil line piping. Is it in series?
@@dbell41888 there is a common header, oil inlet is in the center of the header. from center 2 compressor on left and 2 compressor on right oil is distributed parallel.
great information thank for your knowledge and skill set
You're super welcome!
Always on point .
Appreciate it!
Pls guide me my car gas leaked I refilled it as mechanic could not find any leakage....my question is that is it necessary to fill oil too with gas .... Pls guide
Thank you for the information very helpful
Very nice video !
I am having constant oil failure but Both Rack Completely shut down all compressor the Tech are cleaning the oil screen but every morning we come in and the Both Rack are completely shut down due to oil failure ??
awesome video
Thank you
Thank you Sir.
7.53 main part
Thats probably why we are having new compressors failing after 3 months, they didnt put in a trap.
👍
Illustration is too small for good viewing on the screen.
I apologize
Great video
