Add Tourists To Your Street Photography

  • There are always so many tourists in Bangkok that lately it's really been making me question what my relationship is to them as a street photographer and expat. Martin Parr was a big inspiration for this project as well.
What do you think your relationship is to your local tourist traps as a street photographer?

I recently found myself going through all my travel photos and ended up picking a lot of photos like these as my favorites. Glad to know I'm not wrong about it

I hadn’t even thought to do that, but it’s good reason to support not being so quick to judge what is or is not a bad photo.

I'm glad I found your channel! I'm a fellow expat living in BKK & amateur photographer. There is so much cliche influencer-type 'content' out there now that it's refreshing to see vids with a focus on learning, taking in one's surroundings, & the thought-process of street photographers from the past. I carry my camera everywhere I go in BKK. It helps me keep an artistic eye & look deeper at the seemingly mundane. I've found that even tho many street photos may seem unremarkable NOW, they will age like wine. Photos of tourists using smartphone bricks & taking selfies may seem nostalgic in a future where people wear VR headsets everywhere & take selfies with personal drones. You never know. Anyways, thanks & keep up the good work!

I completely agree with everything you’ve said here and appreciate the kind words. You seem 100% on the level of street photographers I want to interact with. HMU on IG if you’re looking to shoot sometime.

Something I like to think about is that everything that is popular is popular for a reason, but that reason isn't always self evident. I think there is a lot of value in exploring those sometimes deceptive reasons.

I completely agree with you on that. Often those other reasons are much more interesting than what is on the surface.

Interesting, I’ve been doing this for years. I always try to include tourist, even locals in my street photography. I love to travel and growing up seeing other peoples travels. Photos were mostly their slideshow tend to be fascinating, but also boring. So when I find myself at these locations, I try to look for something that’s interesting either compositionally or fascinating to my camera. I’ve been to Bangkok and did a few street photos there, but my biggest headache is traveling with another individual who basically will be in a rush to get to the hotel or get to where we’re going rather than slowing down to check out things. My most successful street photography experience was in New York, or mostly photograph people, better learning later on that New York has become too much of a trope and overdone that no one really cares for those images anymore. Anyway, keep up the good work I’m enjoying watching your videos and hope to see more of your work.

That’s been my problem traveling with others as well. You’re in a new place… might as well take your time and check it out imo

Nicely edited man. Great reasoning behind your thought processes. I ended up getting some really cool shots in some touristic places on my last trip to BKK.

Thank you. Do you have them posted anywhere? I’d like to check them out.

I would say, "Just keep shooting," - I can offer nothing having no experience of this type however i would also say, Don't be critical of the actual images." I say to myself, "Be grateful for what you've got." (once the shutter is pressed.) To me your shots are great!

Appreciate it! There are a few from this round that I’m happy with. More or less I’m always trying to be humble and realistic about the quality. Nothing bothers me more than photographers who think they have a 100% hit rate 😅

I have an Egypt trip coming up and I had pretty much the same idea. I want to try and capture the feeling of the tourist "doing Egypt" - the hustle, the heat, the transits, the luggage, the sweat, the queues, the herding,. I have zero interest in photographing the antiquities. I'll take a street photography setup with me - one lens. It's going to be a a real challenge to keep my head in my game rather than what the tour guide wants to bore me with.

Hit me with a link after you post some of those photos. From what I’ve heard, Egypt is relentless in terms of exhausting tourist experiences (mostly in the form of taxis hollering and people trying to sell you stuff nonstop). Should make for a lot of opportunities to shoot in this way. Good luck.

Really sick shots man, made me want to try it myself haha. What focal length did you shoot at here? 35mm?

      Appreciate it. 🫡
These are all shot with an X100V, so 23mm/35mm equivalent. What tourist locations are near you that you’ll try it at?

Nice, I still haven’t been there, but it seems like a high quality city for street.
