    Perhaps her work can best be appreciated by refraining from the either/or dichotomies you've used to discuss it. Empathic? Exploitative? Yes, and yes. Both/and. The real knowledge comes from positioning oneself in that difficult grey area in between, and living with the discomfort of being there without any definitive answer. Thanks for an intelligent and articulate examination of this difficult artist.

    I'm glad I found your channel! I'm a fellow expat living in BKK & amateur photographer. There is so much cliche influencer-type 'content' out there now that it's refreshing to see vids with a focus on learning, taking in one's surroundings, & the thought-process of street photographers from the past. I carry my camera everywhere I go in BKK. It helps me keep an artistic eye & look deeper at the seemingly mundane. I've found that even tho many street photos may seem unremarkable NOW, they will age like wine. Photos of tourists using smartphone bricks & taking selfies may seem nostalgic in a future where people wear VR headsets everywhere & take selfies with personal drones. You never know. Anyways, thanks & keep up the good work!

    How fun! Love that you branched out. I had no idea about Sugimoto, but mind blown. The movies in one shot is totally wild. "The rest is a technical problem." Plus the fact he snuck the camera in? That part is nuts. Although, on TH-cam at least, all the screens just look plain white. My friend Geo once said (in the halls of the AP headquarters in New York), "A picture is the perfect capture of a moment that never happened." I've never forgotten it. Moriyama loved to take photos of other people's work, and this stuff, like the wax figures, feels like an even deeper move on this. So fascinating. Makes me think even more on how some cultures view appropriating art versus others. (Like how litigious the US tends to be.)

There is an interview with Robert frank at his home in Nova Scotia late 70s it's on the Nova Scotia college of Arts website I think that interview sums up photography then think about it now. With shore you have to put walker Evans's American photos on the table with the Americans by frank frank and look for the arm around the shoulder in every book. Burger shop Evans young couple frank can't remember shores 🤣🫡

    I have one of his books mostly shots in Morocco and his color palette is quite brilliant and also how he manages to get people in the right places

      I probably need to grab the Morocco books too seeing how he’s held it in such high regard.

    I am really enjoy this series. The amount of research you’ve done is apparent and how you’ve put that together with the photos is a pleasure to watch. Keep up the great work.

    I’m often amazed at some of the images on old SD’s that I thought were “throwaways.” Sometimes you’re in a different state of mind and can’t see beauty in images in that moment. I feel Winogrand may have had the same feelings. The photos should be developed to see what treasures we may find.

      I feel the same. It’s clear that it’s a good idea for any photographer to hold onto their work and go back through it at a later date, because they’ll likely find something they love there later on.

    His technical expertise in photography is indeed great, however to me his lack of humanity in how he made his fame will forever tarnish my opinion of him. Afghan girl may be the most memorable image of our modern time but knowing the predatory manner in which Mccurry forced an unwilling young girl to be his subject just never sat right with me. He painted a literal target on a young woman for the sake of advancing his career and for that alone he is not the best photographer ever, at least in my opinion.

    I appreciate his contribution to photography as he has created a volume of work documenting the south in a very unique way. Making images that are absolutely unique that honestly every film photographer tries to replicate shooting mundane objects or scenes. I don't know that I could credit him as being a true artist though, for that it takes some need of self preservation. Perhaps the cliched starving artist not the silver spoon wealthy southern aristocrat capable of working on his art without worry of acceptance or success because his family's old plantation money gives him a cushy net to fall onto.

      You don’t think the rich or well off can be true artists?

      @Caballeroshot 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@developingtank Sure they can, I just don't identify with their work nor do I feel their path to finding their style can be credited in the same way as someone else who had to choose between a meal or buying supplies to create their work.
