Toyota 1ZZ 1.8L Valve Cover Gasket

  • In this video I show you how I replaced the valve cover gasket on my daughter's 2004 Toyota Matrix with the famously reliable 1.8 Liter Toyota 1ZZ engine. This engine was used in many vehicles, such as the Matrix and Corolla, Pontiac Vibe, and others. The valve cover gasket after 220,000 miles on this car was brittle and old and prone to letting oil leak out in little bits. Replacing it on these engines is very easy and not time consuming at all. I go thru the whole process almost in real time, except for the parts where I spent a little time just doing a little cleaning on things. Hopefully, you can get some use from this video, and the confidence to tackle the job yourself.

    Nice video as always.
    From what I could find out, the torque spec for the outer perimeter bolts/nuts is 8 ft. lbs.
    and the torque spec for the inner bolts near the coils is 80 inch. lbs.
    But like you, I totally go with the "good and snug" torque spec. It's more natural.
    Keep the Matrix videos coming!

    Are you supposed to be able to see a little bit of gasket sticking out or should it be flush and not visible?

    Thank you for the detailed video. Update on the leak?

      The valve cover doesn't leak any more. I do have a teeny little leak coming from the timing chain tensioner which mounts to the back of the engine of course on the side where the timing chain is. It just inserts with 2 bolts and has a rubber o-ring that gets brittle. It's a very inexpensive part to replace so maybe one day I'll replace it. Right now, I don't worry about it. It might leak a teaspoon for every oil change.

    funny, i just did my valve cover gaskets today, and it was bent like this where the oil fill is, actually it was partially chewed up.

    Big question. The kit of the valve gasket came. Curse with the gasket.. but they come with 2 small circular rubbers. What's that for can some one tell me?

      Yes, those are for the 2 bolts in the center of the valve cover.

      Valve cover gaskets are usually pretty easy. Take a good look at your engine bay and get an idea of what is in the way and may have to be removed. Sometimes, it's really not much and it's easy stuff. Some newer cars have a ton of stuff over the valve cover. If it's at a level you feel comfortable with, then go for it. Take pictures and video along the way and label everything you're not sure about so you know where it goes back, and take your time. If you get in too deep and don't feel good about things, just reverse what you've done and no harm done.

    Should I wait for rtv to dry before testing ? If so how long? I used permatex ultra black rtv

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That RTV should dry to the touch in an hour and 24 hours for full cure. Maybe take the oil dipstick out and inch or so to act as a vent to eliminate crank case pressure but otherwise you should be able to try it almost right away

    You do all this without draining oil correct?

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. No need to drain oil. It's all at the bottom of the engine.

    Do I really have to put RTV silicone?

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know that it's absolutely required but in that spot where the timing chain cover meets the block I think it's a good idea.

      it's cheap and easy to use and if you fail at it you can be in for rather expensive repairs...@@FloydNashFixItDad

    I had an old vibe that I want to turn into a tuner car but I don't see much on the 1zz engine or how to get horse power out of it like the k series honda motors.

    • @FloydNashFixItDad
      @FloydNashFixItDad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Look for 1ZZ modifications and 1ZZ turbo kits. There is a lot of information and a lot of parts if you look harder. Those engines won't produce as much power as the K series, but you can certainly make them a lot more fun and be pretty reliable. I would love to do that to a Matrix as well. Would be fun to have a Matrix with even just 250-280 HP.
