  • In this video is my reaction and review to the wonderful 80s action flick "Robocop"!! I've never made it around to watching the original! This thing was a wild ride all the way through! It just gives that much more credibility to the 80s action movies being the best in the business!

      @@kevsclassicmovies Basically the director Paul Verhoeven told them to just do things how they normally would in this type of situation, then filmed around them.

    I always thought about what could get through Murphy’s armor and into his human bits, and thought a .50 BMG firing sub cal tungsten sabot rounds could probably get through, maybe Raufoss at the least, but doubt it. ED-209 was supposed to be equipped with three 20mm cannons. The damage to Murphy’s outer chest armor indicates HE frag shells, because they dented the armor not penetrated, but 20mm frag would have blown Mr. Kinney apart. Kinney’s GSW’s looked like .50, not what 20mm frag would do. If ED-209 had 20mm cannons, then tungsten API rounds would have definitely ended Murphy. So, it’s debatable what ED-209’s weaponry is supposed to be. Robocop 2/Cain’s weaponry is certainly impressive.
    Nice reaction! New sub.

      I definitely wasn't sure what kind of ammo/weaponry it's supposed to be for ED209. Although you'd think a 20mm cannon like that would shred through that armor. I feel like they said it was made of Kevlar and titanium. Not sure how much force titanium could withstand, but that would be a cool experiment!
      Thank you a TON for the new sub, and comment!! I appreciate you!!

    This was a (relatively) low budget movie, they had to choose between a Blade-Runner style environment or for their robot characters to look cool, and since it's called "Robocop" they thought that the title character and his chief VFX-heavy adversary should be where the money needed to go.
    They shot it in Dallas standing in for future Detroit and used the recently completed City Hall, with a matte-painting extension as the exterior of the OCP headquarters. This was back when police cruisers were still the boxy Crown Vics with the flat panels and hard edges, the smoother, pill-shape bodies of modern cars were new and usually reserved for pricier sports cars, with a few more affordable models having been just recently introduced. So just painting a bunch of Ford Tauruses black was enough to make it look like a futuristic police car in 1988.

    • @kevsclassicmovies
      @kevsclassicmovies  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I loved the painted Ford Taurus' with the retro futuristic type props on them! I didn't realize they shot in Dallas though! That's awesome! I just love all the older style movies practical effects and set pieces. You just don't get those anymore with movies I feel like. I feel like they did an outstanding job with everything! Thanks for the comment!

    Great review. Its good to see a reaction with an extended review afterwards. Good job! If you have not already seen Total Recall filmed in 1989 released in 1990. It worth a watch. Same director as robocop and based on a story by Philip K. Dick whose books became Blade Runner and Minority Report

    Great reaction! I've always been amused by the moment when the ED-209 robot shoots off his arm, and then he has a short circuit from pain for a few seconds 25:27 ⚡🤖😆 And also the final scene with this robot at the end 32:15 😆 Poor robot

    Robocop had 3 movies, and the 2014 remake that we don't talk about. It also had a mini series called Prime Directive, and a couple cartoon shows. Also the whole family closure thing is in the second movie.

      @@kevsclassicmovies Robocop 2 is worth watching once. It's like 1/3 of a worthy sequel, the other 2/3 of it being mediocre action tropes. We don't speak of 3 or the blasphemous reboot.

    Everything you said about wishing they had done more was a rule in movies in the best films of that era, when movies were 90 minutes as a rule and left young viewers dreaming about the back story and sequels they'd love to make themselves. In that era, MOST great films left the audience wanting more and had abrupt endings that left all the "loose ends" to the viewer's imagination. From 'Night of the Living Dead' and 'An American Werewolf in London' to John Carpenter's 'The Thing' and the David Cronenberg's 'The Fly'... they all had endings that left the audience hanging and thinking in a great way. This gave viewers something to talk about at the burger joint after seeing the movie, trying to imagine what happened next. Modern films give you overkill, too much information and nothing left to your imagination. Look back at the ending of the film "JAWS", after it's over, modern audiences are always saying things like "I wish we would have seen the sheriff go home and confront the mayor" and there's just no need for that kind of over extended ending. In the 80's and before that, movie makers knew... you tell your story, blow the audience away with it and get out. Brevity is the soul of wit. If you can't tell a great story in 90 minutes, you don't have a good story and you need to cut a lot of unnecessary shit out.

    • @kevsclassicmovies
      @kevsclassicmovies  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do enjoy being able to speculate about the possible endings while leaving it kind of open at the end! I just thought they did such a good job that I kind of wanting to see what happened to the family. The old movies do that GREAT story telling and then just stop where they need to, like you said. Definitely a blast watching! Thanks for the comment!!

    The very 1st movie I had on VHS, what a fun ride start to finish. Strong recommendation for Paul Verhoeven's other sci-fi classics Total Recall and Starship Troopers. Unapologetically violent and hilarious, so entertaining.and rewatchable.

      It's been a WHILE since I've seen Total Recall, amd remember that being an awesome sci-fi flick! And I LOVED starship troopers growing up! To be honest I never realized all these movies were made by the same person! No wonder Robocop was great!
      I could probably do a rewatch of Total Recall on here, but I've seen Starship Troopers too many times haha. I don't want to lie to you guys and fake a reaction to a movie I've already seen.
      I was thinking though, if I get big enough to do live streams on weekend nights with you guys, I'd love to rewatch some classic movies along with you guys! Sit back, have some popcorn, drinks and have a nice watch party!

    The story explanation for why you don’t see a lot of “futuristic” stuff is that this is “old Detroit”. OCP has no desire to modernize it. They want to tear it all down to build Delta City, that futuristic city you imagine.

    • @kevsclassicmovies
      @kevsclassicmovies  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love the line of thinking! And if you think about it, a major city with crime ridden areas wouldn't necessarily have the technology because of no money, and that same crime! So it definitely makes sense with the movie!

    There is a sequel, but it had a different writer as the original writer was a part of the Writers Guild of America strike in 1988. The movie did okay, but it wasn't for me. It just wasn't as good as the first. But saying that, it's still MILES better than the 3rd one and the remake. Those were hot garbage and I regret watching them.
    There were also a series of 4 made for TV movies. I have them on DVD, but I've yet to watch those. I heard they're good though.
    And believe it or not, there were 2 cartoons made of Robocop. The first is on TH-cam and I found it enjoyable, but the second was like Inspector Gadget with a Robocop reskin.

      @@kevsclassicmovies the second movie wasn't as good as the first, but stear clear of the 3rd one. It's an insult to the movie franchise
      PS: I would have to Google the cartoons, as I don't know what they were shown on. It might have been shown only in America as I'm certain I would remember if it had been shown in the UK. My brother was Robocop mad at the time. He had the action figures too. I recently got an ED209 on eBay as I'm a nerd. He tends to topple over randomly, so it's movie accurate XD
