Hi Adam, you’re absolutely smashing this lesson. I remember subscribing to this channel with barely 3k subs and yet here you are ~ propelling all of us piano/keyboard learner to speed up our progress. I’m sure you’ll gain many more followers here because of your style of teaching. Your podcast are also helpful and informative, might as well people should check on that. Big respect for putting this out 🫡
oh nice, this is more what 'm looking for , practicing with a nice chord progression. a lot of ppl just doing exercises without any musicality to it. i need stuff like this cuz my whole plan is to learn to write for strings using piano and kontakt libraries
Hi, Adam! Your lessons are excellent. Thank you very much for sharing! I wish you keep making them, so we could learn from your vast knowledge and experience. Wish you health, wealth and happiness! Thank you very much!
Hi Adam, Only just discovered you. I watched a couple of your videos today and the way you explain things is perfect. Simple and clear. I take lessons but love to see how others teach too. Keep up the good work 🙏🙌
Hi Adam, your style of teaching and sharing is awesome. I am a beginner to piano keyboard and starting up with my Yahama EZ 300 is fantastic with your guidance. Love your videos lots. Mano South Africa
I have transposed this to F today and did the first warm-up/technique session of the day. I've been practicing inversions on and off since long, but the exercise with this specific rhythm is really something new. I created my own ireal pro script which I'll play 3-4 times on a weekly basis going through the circle of 5ths (Bb would be n next). So thanks again for this great exercise!
Hello! I've seen this video some time ago ( and practiced the inversions with the pdf ) and applied it to other chords... it is great fun when the practice is musical, and now I can inmediately see a shape and recognize which chord it is. Thanks a lot for the tips of direction to make a smooth transition too. Great lesson!! 💯
I can see in your left hand, sometimes you play with the index finger first, and then the pinky and the thumb at he same time (e.g.1:13, 1:20). And you also will play with the index finger, then the pinky, then the thumb (1:12) That means you play middle note of the chord first, then the both end, not necessarily starting from the pinky to the thumb.😉 As a beginner, I just don't know we can play like this, cos I always just strictly follow playing from the pinky, index finger😮 and the thumb.😅
Hi! Don’t worry too much about this to start with - I alternate with fingerings and there isn’t really a set structure to it. It’s more important to get the shapes down. Hope you found the video useful!
You stole my comment, Adam. I was going to write that I had a lightbulb moment. The iv7 is just a I/vi, the ii7 is just a IV/ii and of course a iii7 is just a V/iii. Throw in a bVII and you got yourself a song. I'm still at the struggling beginner phase, and I'm trying to learn thoroughbass. A Perfect Authentic Cadence (PAC) has the tonic in the soprano, and is the most pleasing. I made a comment to my piano teacher about my method books. I noticed that many of their beginner songs ended with a 3 in the bass and a 1 in the soprano. And then it hit me. A PAC. Or a I6.
Great video. Loved the Am7 "trick". Am7 is just a "C" chord with an "A" in the bass. After spending some time going around the circle of fifths and looking at all the chords and there relative minors I was shocked that I never knew this "Trick" (for lack of a better word at the moment) or had forgotten it. Then I tried the same thing with Major 7 chords and it was quite an eye opener. Quite the light bulb moment. Thanks for this. It is always great learning something new everyday. Can't wait for what is next.
Ah...Adam you inspire me again! 😱 When dealing with unfamiliar chord, I always write down the combination of bass+the triad chord on my sheet as a reminder when I play songs at church, e.g. Dm7 as D+F. But how come I just never thought of writing it as a F/D ! When writing this way, sometimes will help figuring out the sequence relationship between chords.

@@thekeyscoach I have just put it into practice for last Sunday worship.😅 Since I'm still not familiar with Bm7 and Em7 and these chords just come together closely, I re-write them into D/B and G/E for quick learning.🤣 I used to write them as (B+D), (E+G) to remind the bass and right hand. 🤣🤣🤣
Adam, just stumble on your channel. Very interesting. I never seem to get the link. How do I get there please. Would love to down most of your stuff. I am watching from Nigeria.
Hi Josephine - great to hear from you and glad you're enjoying the channel. Send me an email adam@thekeyscoach.com and I'll make sure you get the Lesson Books. Thanks!
I just had that Ah ha moment when you showed me the different way of thinking about the minor 7 chords. Also what is that ghost note I hear sometimes in your right hand? Is it a quick sus chord? Thanks. Great video lesson.
Awesome! I’m occasionally playing the second of the major triad moving to the third. I run through this at the end of the vid - it’s also written out in the PDF lesson book. Hope this helps!
Another smashing video Adam, thanks :). Inversions and rhythm are definitely two of the most important elements in getting a good sound for newer players, imo. Thinking of the hands as being split vertically can help. The thumbs are really important for rhythm, 3rds/5ths and the little/ring fingers for melody. When I started to think that way it made a big difference to my playing. Don't know if this is just me or if this is some kind of taught technique? It's kind of how I think of singer/songwriters playing the piano, as opposed to classical performers. Cheers Adam, thanks for your fantastic efforts. Really excited to see where your channel goes. :)
Probably because I've been playing for a long time, I actually find it more difficult to not use inversions because I'm so used to using them. It's obviously a matter of taste but for me, I'd tend to use the 'smudge' as an accent device, p'raps to help vary the perception of rhythm or to slightly vary the sound quality. IMO using it on every chord might diminish it's effectiveness... YMMV...
Interesting progression; I first thought F is the key. Then I realized it's actually C with a b7 which is not in key. I know that b7 is used a lot in some pop and rock progressions. Am I right?
One of the things that can be confusing with your piano note display program is that it continues to show the note as orange even when you are no longer playing the note. So it may be more helpful to talk more about the notes you’re playing or show them elsewhere.
I really love your videos, but playing no rythm in left hand without inversions vs left hand rythm + inversions is misleading. edit: but everything else is pretty amazing :D

Totally agree. Adam's teaching is really helpful. Especially love the slow clear breakdown every time with very clear explanation.😊
Thanks so much for the support! So glad you enjoyed the video!
I never thought to split the hands vertically in the mind like you mention here...thank you for sharing this!
I'm confused. Why did you choose Dm7? What progression are you using?
Probably because I've been playing for a long time, I actually find it more difficult to not use inversions because I'm so used to using them.

Absolutely! I’m putting it on every chord here as a practice technique.
Thanks for watching!
What about Sus4 rolls? Can they be used in similar fashion? Or are they not as popular?
Hi Igor - thanks for watching! What do you mean by rolls?
@@thekeyscoach Meaning, I your case you roll from note two to note three of the cord. What about going from note four to three?
Absolutely you can use those as well! They work particularly well on dominant 7 chords
Please show full notation of what you play thx✌🏼
Interesting progression; I first thought F is the key. Then I realized it's actually C with a b7 which is not in key. I know that b7 is used a lot in some pop and rock progressions. Am I right?
Absolutely! b7 is used loads in pop and rock progressions - and lots of other styles too! We’re in the key of C here and flat7 is Bb.
Hope that helps!
is this b7 any particular mode 🤔?
Yes you could think in C mixolydian :)

Good point. I think this has since been rectified in later videos - so hopefully the more recent ones won’t have this problem
@@thekeyscoach I’ll check that out. Thanks for the reply. I think your content is very professional and well done.

Every chord but the third…?
