- This is how to make an oscilloscope out of a crt tv, This project can be a fun piece to have in any lab! Be safe, and have fun!

I learned to be careful taking apart tvs like that the hard and painful way
i was attempting what he did, ended up getting shocked twice. Apparently the hole where the suction cup was plugged in held a charge too so when i went to wipe the dust off the back of the tube i got a good jolt. then i tried making an arc like he did when he unplugged the suction cup in the previous video and it ended up jumping from the ground wire i had to my hand instead. even more involuntary arm dancing
By the way, you can calibrate this to use to measure peak voltages and such, I'll make a video soon showing how
I did it and it worked!!! it's really cool and was you addjust the fly back trasfomer(when it's unplugged,thanks for the tip) you can make it be a thick rainbow line.
if you can make a vr headset, no need for audio. just plug hdmi into pc, no android required, ill pay you for it. gotta be under whats in the market of course.
and try mimic the lighthouse tracking that htc vive has. Its way better than IR positional tracking, a little anyway.

If I recall correctly, horizontal drive is what drives the high voltage.
I love CRTs and I collect them so quite obviously when I acquired a monochrome PVM that had no other use I had to try it and now I have an oscilloscope in my hi-fi
Hey man! I’ve been searching around on the best ways to do this, I think my tv is one like yours, any other ideas to remedy the “protection mode” it goes into since the video was made?

Currently I have it set so there’s both wires from my stereo speaker outputs, hooked up to both the horizontal and vertical coils in the tv
Whilst leaving the flyback to charge the tube of course, if you have a chance I’m going to post exactly what I have currently on my channel for reference, but I really like it how you had it going! Truly what I was aiming for initially.

Hi, I just completed this project, and it worked like a charm- I loved it... until it tried to kill me... (Not really). I was playing normal songs and using a frequency generator when the tv suddenly screached at me- it sounded like the flyback transformer. It was a sudden, very loud, continuous high-pitch sound. I unplugged it immediately. Any idea what happened? Is it dead? Thanks!
did you try turning it off and back on?

Hi! Did this with a tv, after some time, the beam in the center of the screen created a small dark spot that stayed after turning the device off. Can it be dangerous to continue using it? I'm thinking it might have removed the safety layer inside and I'm afraid of the x-rays.

+Josh Alpaca hi! A CRT monitor should work fine for this aswell, as long has it has the horizontal coil, and the vertical coil then it should be ok!

However, if you mean to say what does it do within the TV, it applies a high voltage field across a near vacuum of the CRT, and so this way, the electrons with a negative change are driven towards the positive side of the TV, the electric field causes the electrons to accelerate to a very high velocity, so that when it collides with the phosphorescent screen, it will be enough to create photons of visible light converted from the energy of the electron :)
If you don't wanna have it laying on it's side and you'd rather just use the 60hz, you can just plug the vertical deflection out from the board into the horizontal coil. Also, I agree that the "safer" TVs suck for any electronics projects.
Hello, Keystone Science. I built one of these oscilloscopes this afternoon; easiest electrical build I've ever done thanks to your video. But if I had an input signal and wanted to determine its frequency, how would I go about changing the speed at which the electron beam zips back and forth across the screen, like a "real" oscilloscope? Could you cover that in a future video maybe?
the speed of the horizontal sweep is usually controlled with a sawtooth wave generator. i imagine the answer youre looking for is related to computing a value from there.
What is the maximum voltage I can test using this?
My TV is a Sanyo DS13204 So do i only need the brown and black???

You would have to hook the wires back up the way they were originally, of course if you break the tv you absolutely cannot

what if you swich the wires of te gray and jelow whit the blue and red you can rotate the tv to its original position an you dont have to conekt a second coil
I believe it is with the way CRT's create images by 'scanning' the beam across the screen. They scan top to bottom - left to right. The left to right scanning was probably just to fast for him to properly display audio frequencies so he used the top to bottom scanning.

But switching* the* x and y is just* rotating the* screen* 90 degrees.* Yes but the scanning speed for X-X and Y-Y are diffrent. X-X scans faster then Y-Y. This is because for every Y incriminate it scans a whole row of X.

how about a frequency generator?
The reason that the TV didn't start up with the same amount of resistance in resistors as the resistance of the coil, is because of the inductance of the coil. The coil will limit current by using power to drive the magnetic field associated with it. Resistors won't do that, so you'd have to use something of equal inductance.

Connect the horizontal coil to the vertical output, And connect the audio to the vertical coil. Boom don't even need to turn it around.

So... when I got this tv, it wasn't working. I learnt it was a simple problem with the flyback Anode. It was misplaced. I basically put it on the right position, and turned the tv on. It worked properly! Well, at least for the next 2 minutes, hehe. I turned it off, and when I turned it back (actually, just plugged it on the outlet, and it started by itself) it behaved like yours. It took some time for the image to appear, the image presented those diagonal strips, and after some time it would turn itself off. That's all I know... Hope I can still save this tv for useful experiments! :D

Why not make it horizontal?
The scanning of the tv makes it very hard to make it horizontal, it is much easier this way
You just connect the Horizontal coil to the Vertical output on the circuit board.
The thing that sincerely baffles me, is how many great electricians and engineers that make these amazing instructional videos and for some reason they all have the same flaw. They have advanced knowledge of circuits and signal processing etc... and for some unknown reason THEY ALL CANT FIGURE OUT THE AUDIO FOR A YOTUTUBE VIDEO! Either it’s clipping to shit like this one or its way too quiet. You see crazy $ put into a scope or tools, and they couldn’t hack together a decent mic and preamp? And also understand what hard clipping is?

I still don't get why breaking the screen was inevitable.
he had two, one of them he accidentally caused the flyback transformer to short I believe, and its pretty near pointless to try and find the exact flyback for that specific tv, he could just find another on the side of the road

Be forewarned TV'S can provide FATAL doses of electricity, They operate with high voltage even in what may appear "safe innocuous places" even after being unplugged. The hi capacity capacitors hold charges for lengthy periods of time. BE CAREFUL. Always unplug, let TV sit for at least an hour, then discharge the capacitors. Discharge capacitors with grounded screwdriver no bare metal where you touch the tools. Always use grounded electronic tools- rubber grips on handles (minimum, use best insulated tools you have). If you don't know what I mean by anything written above leave TV alone! Don't take it apart. Again take extreme precautionary measures. High voltage can kill!
