What can I say--I lost my cousin this year. he had cancer and we use to listen to Neil all day long back in the 70's and 80's. Neil made us laugh and cry. There are only a few American bands that lasted through the British invasion of that period. Neil still Rocks!
This beautiful song reminds me of a good friend, Bill, who also loved Neil and played guitar & died of ALS last year, at 54. At his memorial a few friends played some Neil Young in his memory. Whenever I hear this song, the tears flow as I remember Bill fondly.
I've been a Neil Young fan from the early 70's, and continue to listen to his music. My son gave me a copy of Neil's book for Christmas last year. It was an enjoyable book....but I think Neil shouldn't quit his day job.
For me this registers memories of people, animals cars and trucks that have shared my life with me... though most of all of them are gone, I still wish them 'long may you run'...
I'm almost 62 now. Only found out 2 years ago as a truck driver that this song was dedicated to his old ride. When I hear it now, I say thanks to Neil for nailing this relationship between a man & his 1st car & singing it in a song. Right on.
A song about his beloved old 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse, which took him and his music gear everywhere until the gearbox gave in one day on a long slope down into the town of Blind River. Its chrome heart, shining in the sun, describes that grand old car.
This song is dedicated to my grandfather. He passed away 3 weeks ago from Cancer. This is the theme song for the relay for life. Love and miss you Papa
Neil is just one of those singers who sings from his heart. There is no one else like him. When I hear his songs on the radio, it stops me in my tracks and it always makes me smile. Thanks for posting!
I've been hounding friends with persistent and repeat emails on a daily basis about this particular performance of a timeless song by one of the most durable and lasting artists in the history of popular music --- long may neil young and his example of artistic and emotional honesty run. still can't get over hearing neil solo --- few things are more beautiful.
Been listening to Neil since i was 14, now 56, he will always be a legend in his own time~~ Love his music!!!! It always has a story for everyones life! love him so special!!!!!
I'm a stoic American, but when Neil performed this, I not only thought about the past 2 weeks but about a million other things. Thanks for the memories Canada, Neil, and Olympians.
a true gentleman and prolific songwriter, one of my alltime favourite artist of the last twenty years since ive been listening,a true legend, long may you run neil, keep on rocking in the free world
Hey Pain... I totally agree. I never suspected Neil would perform... I will admit that I cried. Neil Young is one of those Canadian icons that fit the Canadian perspective. AM I THE ONLY ONE PROUD TO SAY... I AM CANADIAN!!!!
To my first car... 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee... spent countless hours and a lot of blood, sweat and tears fixing, maintaining and modifying her. Where ever you are baby... long may you run.
+hamilton5071 sorry buddy but I loaded her up with Rap, R&B and other Poop Music, then I doused her in gas, shoved a plank against the accelerator, pointed her in the direction of the setting sun and a big cliff, closed my eyes, lit a smoke, then jumped out before the cliff... I dont know what you did to that Jeep but it never ran good so I had to end it all.
+Bobs Cats And sorry B.C., but after that car just missed landing on me, and bounced a bit, it landed sound and runnin' still! I thustly then took the driver's-throne. And having (thankfully) a 1975 Springsteen cassette tape in my back pocket, inserted it so, and drove home. A great 2nd car for me now. It lives! I hopes UR not disappointed! I guess the Cherokee was 'born to run'!
This song is dedicated to my high school best friend Mike. Last time I saw him alive was at his father's funeral, just before my wife and I got married. Long may you run, Mike. Long may you run.
Never heard a Neil young song before the closing ceremony but this song brought tears to me then and every time I listen to it. Now I want to go to a concert. Yes I am gen y
that shows how much respect Neil had for Conan performing it on the last show, so beautiful!!!! I hope somewhere someone has that performance saved because it's a masterpiece... Conan come back soon darling because you are one of a kind.
It's a good tune. I'm pretty surprised that one of today's country music stars hasn't covered it and made a big hit from it. I can practically hear it now, it would be a success.
Besides fabulous lyrics, it's that gentle and somewhat forlorn quality about Neil's vocals and harp that makes his music so unforgettable. Many of Neil's songs paint scenes right out of a Fredrick Remington work of the Old American West. In a sense, Neil's music is the ultimate "time machine." Through Neil's music, we get in touch with our personal memories and with who we were (and are) as Americans and Canadians. Thank you, Canada! Thank you, Neil Young!
On the Olympic games in Canada one of dudes said in the commetns that those song should be Canada Anthem. It was so awesome.``Long may you run``Neil Young)))it was so brilliant to see Neil on that show)respect to CANADA from Ukraine)))sorry for bad English)
magic. poetry. this reaches right in there and reminds me there is beauty in age and memories are timeless. i miss a couple people i lost this year, and listening to this makes me feel connected in some way . . .
I have heard that song before on the radio or somewhere. I actually am not very good with artist names, but you did a wonderful job the closing ceremony when th torch went out I had to investigate who you were. Congrats to Neil for a great performance on the world stage and congrats to the person who chose him and the piece of music for the closing. - Ror from Mississauga, Ontario
Just rolled through Blind River Ontario this morning at 3am on a Freight Train Westbound...Long May You Run! When I go through Blind...I catch myself to the hum of Neil!
There was a scene during the closing ceremonies while Niel was performing this song that showed the gold-medal winning Canadian bobsleigh team of Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse enjoying the song and basking in the last few minutes of the Olympic Torches' glow with their eyes closed. That image made me happy and sad at the same time, it reminded me that all things have a start and an end, and we as Canadians should take pride in our accomplishments at theses games, even if the flame is out.
About three semesters before I graduated from college, one of the journalism majors quoted the opening lines in his farewell column. So when my friends and I graduated, I played the song at our party. Almost everyone got choked up, so yeah it works on lots of levels.
To Bill Cohan. I miss and love you ❤. You were in your 80swhen you passed. I was in my 30s. I was devastated. We had some great times. You said I brought comfort to you living next door. It was the opposite. Love you forever.❤
my very favorite from my old Canadian buddy Neil Young to all my google friends. long may you run......... and yes, i know Blind River, Ontario Canada very well. one of my favorite places on this whole planet........
He really wrote this song in dedication to blessings I want to leave with my two children, unduly estranged from me for 12 years, never knowing where they were or how they were until finding out in 2011 that they were living with their dad in Florida all that time. Thank you, Neil. (For all of you who would believe this, of course, he wrote it about his car... just, not to me he didn't.)
Thank you Neil Young for this beautiful song! Best way to end the Olympics Vanouver 2010 was the best time of my life!! With Glowing hearts strong and free!!
I don't care if the song is about his car, his dog, or the old neighborhood lady he cut grass for as a kid. It's a great passionate and sincere tune. Great stuff
This is my favorite Neil performance of this song. I like the progression he uses here, and his voice is nice. But what I like the most is the percussive strumming, lightly striking the guitar on three downstrokes in every measure. I know that's generally his style, but here it especially makes the sound richer and more interesting, and just plain cool. All his performances from this concert were great, so thanks for positing!
The stylish Pontiacs of the 70s, GTOs, LeMans, great cars, great power, my Dad bought me one when I was 16. Whenever people talk about It always brings me good memories, my first car, first kiss, first high school football games, first drive on my own to the beach.
A beautiful metaphor on his part. Even though the song refers to one of his beloved cars he owned, the lyrics also play into relationships one may have with someone you care deeply about. One that makes you happy and to deal with whatever life throws at you to keep that relation strong no matter what....................................
neil young has sons with cerebral palsy and he and several musicians(CSN included) sing each year at his summer camp for the disabled... he made a video of his son riding in the back of his truck through the woods and he played this song...though confined to a wheel chair..."long may you run"
We've been through Some things together With trunks of memories Still to come We found things to do In stormy weather Long may you run. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run. Well, it was Back in Blind River in 1962 When I last saw you alive But we missed that shift On the long decline Long may you run. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run. Maybe The Beach Boys Have got you now With those waves Singing "Caroline No" Rollin' down That empty ocean road Gettin' to the surf on time. Long may you run. Long may you run. Although these changes Have come With your chrome heart shining In the sun Long may you run.
The song is about a hearse that Neil and his band used to drive around Canada in. Blind River is a town in northern Ontario halfway along the north shore of Lake Huron. Just down the road from Bruce Mines where I used to live.
Nice. The Olympics were bookended by two beautiful performances -- in the opening ceremony, K.D. Lang's luminescent renditon of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," and this song by Neil in the closing ceremony.
Yesterday was Neil Young’s birthday. 75 years old. Longer may you run Neil. Thanks for all the great songs.
Neil I am a grown man and you make me tear. I'm not embarrassed, but proud to be Canadian.
Long May You Run good sir, for you are a gift from God.

Still think this is Neil's best song ever. Played it at my Dad's funeral. RIP Jimmy Wayne Bowman (1948-2000)
A Neil Young song is about as pure and honest as it gets.... His music is sincerity personified.
Yes and yes again!
@@billwhite9703 Wow! I posted that 12 years ago Bill...Long may you run indeed! :)

Neil has written so many incredible songs. His reedy voice has a uniqueness and a simple beauty that is unmatched.
Love this song and Neil! I think his car in this song is a metaphor for all things and people that we knew, loved and miss.

I was devastated my friend. I miss you 🤗
About three semesters before I graduated from college, one of the journalism majors quoted the opening lines in his farewell column. So when my friends and I graduated, I played the song at our party. Almost everyone got choked up, so yeah it works on lots of levels.

I don't care if the song is about his car, his dog, or the old neighborhood lady he cut grass for as a kid. It's a great passionate and sincere tune. Great stuff
My Dad's favorite song. We played it at his funeral. LONG MAY YOU RUN>'JWB 1948-2000
Many years hence, he will be forever remembered as truly one of the Great Poets of the 20th Century - long may run Neil, long may you run.....

Neil Young will live forever as one of the world's great musicians
Thanks for posting this. It's a beautiful song!
He played this wonderfully during the closing ceremonies. Rock on Neil Young!!!!!!!!!
The stylish Pontiacs of the 70s, GTOs, LeMans, great cars, great power, my Dad bought me one when I was 16. Whenever people talk about It always brings me good memories, my first car, first kiss, first high school football games, first drive on my own to the beach.
For my friend Peter, who was a huge "Neiler" fan........and left us in 1995....Long May you run up there Pete....
Let's hope he continues to sing and perform for a long, long, long time.
Just handed in the plates to my old VW, and thought of this song. RIP.
To rahlgren. Totally about his first car. Glad someone knew this. I dedicate it to my 1973 VW 411. Sure do miss it. I hope it's still running~♥
This was a wonderful song to close out the Olympics. Almost a Canadian anthem in itself! Proud to be a CANADIAN...
A beautiful metaphor on his part. Even though the song refers to one of his beloved cars he owned, the lyrics also play into relationships one may have with someone you care deeply about. this man really has a heart of gold and a voice like an angel
These words fell out of Heaven even though we can Imagine that there is none.
This song always reminds me of my late husband. Beautiful.
Thank You Mr. Young for the many years of amazing music.
We've been through
Some things together
With trunks of memories
Still to come
We found things to do
In stormy weather
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come
With your chrome heart shining
In the sun
Long may you run.
Well, it was
Back in Blind River in 1962
When I last saw you alive
But we missed that shift
On the long decline
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come
With your chrome heart shining
In the sun
Long may you run.
Maybe The Beach Boys
Have got you now
With those waves
Singing "Caroline No"
Rollin' down
That empty ocean road
Gettin' to the surf on time.
Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes
Have come
With your chrome heart shining
In the sun
Long may you run.
Great song thanks for posting
His songs are so mournful. This song is great! Especially at the Olympics!!
I second that. Incredible performance tonight. And for thanking Conan for his support of new music through the years. Totally class act.
My God, this is so simple and so amazing.
it was very cool to hear him perform this i wasnt there but it fit very very well with all that happened in the olympics!
Thanks Neil......gold medal Olympic performance.
Thank You Canada.
Blind River represent! I love this song.
Outstanding moment at the closing ceremony. The guy is timeless, Woodstock seems like just yesterday.
makes me miss my boy, long my you run.
Wonderful every time again!
My dad's memorial song. Long may you run, Daddy. :-)
Ode to my 1978 Chevy Camaro. Where ever you are my friend, long may you run.
Beautiful tune, beautiful lyrics from the greatest of them all
The song is about a hearse that Neil and his band used to drive around Canada in.
Blind River is a town in northern Ontario halfway along the north shore of Lake Huron. Just down the road from Bruce Mines where I used to live.
This one and "Only love can break your heart" are my two favorites by Niel.
We played this song at my daddy's funeral. I don't know if it's about a car or not. But it reminds me of my dad every time i hear it.
Nice.
The Olympics were bookended by two beautiful performances -- in the opening ceremony, K.D. Lang's luminescent renditon of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," and this song by Neil in the closing ceremony.
