Sadly Nils is a highly overlooked axe legend. However... for those of us who are about to rock, Sir Nils Lofgren, we most humbly salute you! Amen. "Long May You Run Nils".
I have always liked that Bruce says that Nils plays 100 times better than he does and yet will always wander over when he has a solo, "Maybe to see if I've gotten any better". His spinning solo on "Because the Night" is a highlight of Bruce's shows (the spinning being a modification of the flips he did now that he has two metal hips!) He is so humble and seems to be more than content to be the second (or 3rd when Stevie Van Zandt is on stage) guitarist and compliments those on stage with him so very well.
Nils really is a great guy. I'm currently (believe it or not) working on his next music video with our music/film production classes at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, AZ. We're in post, just in time because he's gone outta town now to practice since Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are getting back together. He's so awesome to work with, and he spoke about his different recording techniques and taught us some industry stuff to our music class a few weeks ago. Valuable knowledge.
If you watch the clip from "Unplugged", Neil gives Nils a subtle nod and smile when he starts singing the first verse, like "You were right, Nils. Good call."
This is awesome! I met him years ago in Hartford, he was at a bar after the game. Very down to earth, bought us a few beers. An amazing experience. And so talented!!!!! Rock on Nils, Rock on.
Nils has a long and successful history in the music field. He is so talented. Oh, and he has played brilliantly with both Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, along with many others. Long may HE run!
This shows us how musically talented he is by playing and very good singing loaded with nuances like his playing. He seems also so sweet and a real gentleman. He does his job but he doesn't have to shout it out loud to the world-we already know that and enjoy his music and playing.
@@ekahiway4666 Of course, Nills was on the After The Gold Rush LP, mainly on the piano. Not long after that, he had to fill Neil's AND Danny Whittens shoes on guitar on the Time Fades Away tour, as Neil was so torn up about Danny's passing he wouldn't pick up a guitar on stage for a long time.
I consider Neil to be my "real Dad". He showed up last Spring in Victoria BC to support 1,200 people arrested for trying to protect trees. Good old BC government. They will cut and cut until all the Ancient Ones are gone. Long May You Run is one of my favourite songs. For years, I figured it was about a woman friend of Neil's. For me, you can't really sing a Neil song better than Neil, but Nils Lofgren just did. And to think he played piano on After The Gold Rush at 18. Thanks for this video.
Nils has been a talented player for years and a secret weapon to both the Crazy Horse band and The E Street band for their continued sucess not to mention his great catalog of songs as well❤🎸😎👍
When Nils was awfully young Neil had him come out from New York and play piano on "After The Goldrush". Nils was like, "but I'm just fooling around learning piano". Neil was like - "that's why I want you to play. The results will live forever. This version is pretty sweet, a quality Neil obviously liked in Nils.
Iv'e seen Nils in so many famous bands but had never heard him on his own. Excellent job on an excellent song. I also never realized he played on Neil's Harvest Moon album which I consider Neil's best ever.
an unsung...well not so much..hero... the consistent backbone to so much music history....... so appreciative of his talent and music he has given us...
wow, thanks for posting, I knew there were problems w/the unplugged set, had no idea it was scrapped and then redone in LA, and Nils had to insist this one was done..have it on VHS, it is great, especially with the inspiration for it singing backup--Nicollette Larson
Nine years late to the party (this video, that is), but this is still a big deal to me. Thanks for the tune, Nils, one of my top-of-the list favorites. I was in attendance at the Unplugged taping at Universal, what a great show. Larry Craig gave me a Herco Pro Gold Flex 50 pick as a memento. It was hilarious how Kenny Buttrey, who for contractual reasons was using the name Alex Butterworth, received his initiation hazing as Mr. Butterworth (a new guy lol) into the band. Neil let him have it pretty good. It rained over three inches at Universal City during the event, and when the show was over a bunch of us were semi-stranded there because Lankershim Blvd was completely underwater with stalled cars stacking up in the former street. There was no letup in the storm that night, the normally 7 minute drive to the Glendale Fwy on-ramp took 45 min, and a total of five hours to reach Santa Barbara. That was a most interesting night in so many ways and one I could never forget. Thanks again, R-
My brother is a guitarist in Goldhill Oregan, sings the blues, writes.....he's a Neil fan but I now must tell him about Nils.............and now that i have had my mind and heart opened up again by his music ( Nils) I am going to keep looking for that music man to love and ......well to love and be loved back......thank God for the music makers
Love this song. I live about 2 hours from Blind River. I miss Gordon like family. A great composer and performer.
I like that he did his own style on this song .awesome talent ✌
He was in the band. They probably recorded more than one version of many of their original songs
Nils has ALWAYS been the real thing. An artist in his own right. Loving his music since 1974. Seeing him again at B.B.Kings NYC tomorrow night.
Glad that you are able to go see him, have fun and enjoy.
Sadly Nils is a highly overlooked axe legend. However... for those of us who are about to rock, Sir Nils Lofgren, we most humbly salute you! Amen.

perfect words.......no point in my posting a comment.....you said it all.....
I didn't know the queen knighted him when did that happen?

As a guitar geek and Nils fan, I'd forgotten what a great guy Nils is and what a immediate voice he has. Long may you run Nils!
right on Brother ✌🏻
Great. Been listening to Nils 30 years or more. Thank you.
If you watch the clip from "Unplugged", Neil gives Nils a subtle nod and smile when he starts singing the first verse, like "You were right, Nils. Good call."
This song is a goodbye love letter to Neil’s up until then faithful car :)
A musical idol, a true gentleman and I could listen to him play forever.
This is awesome! I met him years ago in Hartford, he was at a bar after the game. Very down to earth, bought us a few beers. An amazing experience. And so talented!!!!! Rock on Nils, Rock on.

A key member of Ringo's All-Starr band as well.
Saw Nils Lofgren with Joe Cocker and J Giles Band in Austin Texas 1977
This shows us how musically talented he is by playing and very good singing loaded with nuances like his playing. He seems also so sweet and a real gentleman. He does his job but he doesn't have to shout it out loud to the world-we already know that and enjoy his music and playing.
Yep
Beautiful rendition Nils, love your voice.
Love Nils, he does the song justice. Good job brother.
Always loved Nils, Grin, his voice, and acrobatic skills. Long may you run.

Our local guy from Bethesda MD made it! God love you Nils..

Always loved Nils, truly unappreciated as an artist on his own. "Valentine" is one of my favorite songs.
Nils has been a talented player for years and a secret weapon to both the Crazy Horse band and The E Street band for their continued sucess not to mention his great catalog of songs as well❤🎸😎👍
A favorite version of a favorite Neil song. Love Nil’s vocal on this.
@tkhobbs
Been a fan since 1971, ever since Grin's "See What Love Can Do" and Nils' piano on Neil's "Southern Man". Still have "Grin" (1971) on vinyl.

wow, thanks for posting, I knew there were problems w/the unplugged set, had no idea it was scrapped and then redone in LA, and Nils had to insist this one was done..have it on VHS, it is great, especially with the inspiration for it singing backup--Nicollette Larson
@blindriv3r, Nicollette and Neil's half sister Astrid were on backup that night. Angelic voices were sung.
Nine years late to the party (this video, that is), but this is still a big deal to me. Thanks for the tune, Nils, one of my top-of-the list favorites.
