Ralph Fiennes has been one of my favorite actors since the 90s. That little five year run he had from 1993-1997 was just golden. Schindler’s List, Quiz Show, Strange Days, The English Patient, and Oscar and Lucinda. Nice to see him get some awards buzz
Me too , I love him. He was great in Strange Days, a very different kind of role for him. But my favorite ones from that era are: The End of the Affair and the 1992 version of Wuthering Heights with Binoche.
He should have also won for The English Patient. Not only does he perform under heavy makeup lying in bed dying as convincingly as possible but that scene where he carries wounded Catherine up to the cave and completely dissolves into tears against a soaring soundtrack by Gabriel Yared is something that mesmerizes me to this day!!!
I agree, and I think that character was very much cinematically framed to represent purity/an authentic vessel of god, rather than the power-hungry politcers who are only man, and the idea that character would have that twist that represented duality felt very fitting
Would love to see this film. I really would love to see Ralph Fiennes finally win his Oscar. He has always been a wonderful actor but I agree with everyone here he should've won over Tommy Lee Jones for his spectacular, scary and haunting performance in Schindler's List, a true masterpiece of a film.
Interesting that this reviewer says he was “bored”, because I’ve seen Conclave twice now, and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. I haven’t been bored for a single moment. Also I found a lot of symbolism throughout, and in the way it ended.
I just want to say that I truly agree with all other people who claim Ralph Fiennes to be one of the most gifted and preeminent actors of his time. I remember, shortly before his Tony Award win for Best Leading Actor in a Play for his role of Prince of Denmark, he was presented as "who might be the best Hamlet of his generation"!
For me, I was absorbed in for every minute of the narrative. I personally didn’t mind that it takes it time, as I think every detail is followed through all the way to fruition. I see your point as to why you are split on the twist though, but I think the implications of what is going on in the background and what that means for the film thematically really has made me love the entire film that much more. Personally, I hope this wins Adapted Screenplay; I think it’s a masterpiece!
Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola, should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.
I haven’t seen the film yet but I know it will win Best Picture because the Oscars is political in its messages. Not sure it has much to say about Rome or its church. The topic of prison reform and reformation of prisoners is always a strong topic.
I've been curious about this movie. As a staunch atheist I absolutely love movies about the Catholic Church and the intrigue around the Vatican and the Pope. This has such a stacked cast. I'm looking forward to watching this. Thanks for your review!
Her mother won an Oscar for being Ingrid Bergman. But it’s gotta be a bit awkward knowing your mom has won multiple Oscars and not one, not two but three of your exes have Oscars.
Ralph Fiennes broke my heart in the English Patient! He deserves At Least a nomination. He’s an excellent actor and kills every role in several different kinds of characters. He’s just due. ♥️
The book was a nonstop read, you could not put it down. The ending needed another chapter, but that cliffhanger could go in multiple directions. (sequel?).
Oh hell yeah. This is somehow the movie I’m most hype for. read the book really early this year, liked it a lot, then trailer popped up out of nowhere on my feed and I was shocked because I didn’t know they were adapting it. I want to see it so bad.
I rarely go to a movie on opening night (Oppenheimer was the last exception) because I’ve having an early day at work on Friday. I will buy my opening night ticket as soon as they go on sale

I loved her short film series "Green Porno" (quirky storytelling clips about mating rituals in the animal kingdom- well worth a view if you haven't seen them!) And fun fact: Isabella posed with Madonna back in the early 1990s in Madonna's 'Sex' Book (and is featured in Madonna's music video for 'Erotica' in behind-the-scenes clips from the making of the 'Sex' book)

I loved Ralph Fiennes in The English Patient, I watched that film 3 times in the theatre back in 1997! He should’ve won the Oscar for that performance.

Kind of an eye roll. 🙄 But everything up to that final 15-20 mins was utterly compelling.
Best Actor 2024: Ralph Fiennes. Best Supporting Actor: Stanley Tucci. Best Cinematography: Conclave. Best Production Design: Conclave. Best Score: Conclave. The ending, to me, didn’t come out of nowhere, considering it deals with one of the issues society is facing now, more than ever before.
If Fiennes gets nominated for this film, then this should have been his 5th nomination. In my opinion, he should have been nominated for 'In Bruges' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel.'
The book ended the same way. I wonder if on a rewatch if people will be looking for the clues to the ending. Also, if a movie is being adapted from a book or play, reviewers really should read the source material. If they did then they would know Rossellini's role is not that big and only plays one part of in the overall mystery of who is going to be come the new Pope.
I like the movie, especially Fiennes performance. I can see Fiennes winning, but not the movie. I like the intent of being inclusive, but the ending no spoilers went a little far. I also like that it admitted that popes have been flawed people in the past. I would not root for this to win, but I enjoyed it more than Dune 2 and Sing Sing.

I was an adult Altar Server in one of thje largest Cathedrals in Australia. I assisted at many of the masses both your every day (low) mass and solemn masses previously called a High Mass with both bishops and/or cardinals celebrating. The Rochet (the white garment worn under the elbow length Mozzetta) by the bishops and cardinals in this movie is not the correct length. This garment is sometimes embroidered or has lace at the bottom, the length is usually to mid calf or to the knee. Maybe you should watch Brian's other videos. He always gives his reasons why he likes or does not like a film. And he never seems biased, even though he may mention some personal reason why a film spoke to him more strongly than another.
@@waynedexterno he is saying that the gay review found something wrong and maybe he is gay so that means that it may not be as good. Kind of the opposite of homophobia.
Can someone please explain why Ralph is pronounced ray? What is the grammar logic for it? I also add that he deserved a nomination for bigger splash, there was definitely room for him in the supporting category in 2015
This was a solid film and I think it will pick up a few Oscar noms. My only complaint is that the ridiculous, out-of-nowhere ending hurt the film. I think it’ll hurt it enough that it will get a few nominations but few if any wins at all.
where is the diversity? Why aren't these rolls played by lesbian black women? Another problem: it focuses too much on the Catholic Church. It should also portray Muslims and Islam and African religions as well. Whoever wrote the script alienated movie goers.
They wouldn't dare to produce a movie that is anti-islamic, even less one that mentions the name of Mohammed. The studios would be burnt down. Catholics are an easy target because we are forgiving.
All Quiet On The Western Front was the most horrific, grisly anti war movie ever made. Technically brilliant but nauseatingly shocking images you won't ever forget!!
I DISAGREE 100%. Ralph Finnes was... good, but very one note. I thought his sobbing scene was totally overdone and made no sense. People don't sob that loudly when they think they might be overheard. As for Stanley Tucci... to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, he runs the gamut of emotions from A to B. I kept waiting for him to say "Gird your loins". As for the Art Direction and Cinematography: IT SUCKED. Every single scene was an arrangement of Black, White, and Red... EVERY SINGLE ONE. And what was with that fucking Blue Filter on the entire film? I kept hoping it was a metaphor for the cloud they were under and that AT SOME POINT, we'd get full spectrum color saturation. No such luck. As for composition and beauty: The locations were beautiful (or set recreations of the Vatican). Meaning the artists and architects of THE VATICAN get the credit. Not the guy who aimed the camera at what they created. Shots like the "UMBRELLAS SHOT" were clumsily inserted in a very self-conscious way. There's nothing at all original about that shot. I've seen it a dozen times before, and i liked it better in Toni Braxton's video. As for Isabella Rosalini, I've always found her to be a tepid actress. She was actually BETTER in this film thanks to her lack of dialog. When she finally gets her "big scene" i cringed at the inevitable woke / DEI / Feminist messaging. BUT THEN, THERE'S THE BIG PLOT TWIST... which i saw coming a mile away. Ever since Norman Lear's ALL IN THE FAMILY, we get the archetype ( Archie-type) of the racist, bigoted, loudmouth, old White dude, made ridiculous by the the quite wisdom of the Oracle Minority. Revealing the Mexican Pope as Hermaphrodite was something i actually anticipated, having heard or seen nothing about this film before going to the theater. When Lawrence asks what name the new Pope has chosen, i was waiting for "him" to give two snaps and sau "GUUUURL. CALL ME SASHA FIERCE", before catwalking to the throne. Why must EVERY FUCKING MOVIE be an infomercial for woke, anti-racist, trans propaganda?!?!?! I'm so happy Hollywood is dying and no one pays attention to tgeir nonsense anymore. God is real... and he won't be mocked by Pedowood elites, preaching to the unwashed masses.

Can someone please explain why Ralph is pronounced ray? What is the grammar logic for it? I also add that he deserved a nomination for bigger splash, there was definitely room for him in the supporting category in 2015
It’s more like Rafe. And is the old English pronunciation of Ralph.
I love sarcism.. but I think you are too subtle.. lolol.. woke folks won't get it.
They wouldn't dare to produce a movie that is anti-islamic, even less one that mentions the name of Mohammed.
The studios would be burnt down. Catholics are an easy target because we are forgiving.
You are the best.
Of course, it's an Oscar picture. It's leftist blasphemy
Are you okay?
@Ujemaima bite me
the main pedophile is the Catholic Church. the main defender of pedophiles was John Paul ii. don't spoil the movies, you pos. and god doesn't exist. 😈
That guy is ranting and too much bla bla bla for nothing
I'll probably see it but it doesn't seem like an original topic: Pope dies and the drama around picking a new Pope. Yawn.
There is a great deal of intrigue in the book and I think it will be more interesting than a lot of people think
It’s anti-Catholic propaganda so if you hate the Church you might like it.
Agreed with the lack of dynamic. The second hour is when it started to pick up. The end sucked lol
