    I think that the final plot twist is making the point that it IS a non issue, yet the RC church is obsessed with it.

    Loved the mystery element to this movie. The twist I thought worked because as much as they wanted someone without a shaded past, they didn't get it. Just degrees of shade. I enjoyed it.

      @@crobeastnesswhy? I thought it was weird and jarring, but I didn't even understand what the issue was. The character didn't even know this about himself until, I guess, fairly recently and it changed nothing about him. *spoilers:
      It's not like he was trans. I honestly didn't understand the problem.

    • @crobeastness
      @crobeastness 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @freegadflyathome I'm not even talking about the ending. Stanley Ricci and Ralph Fiennes' characters aren't even Catholic. Why would they want to completely change the Church teaching of their own church? The traditional cardinals are made to be caricatures especially the Italian one.
      In terms of the twist ending, I dont doubt that some priests in the past may have had the same anatomy, but not knowingly. The priesthood is intended for those that are fully men. Also the implication the movie makes with that ending is that anyone should be accepted into the priesthood and this is the first step to that.

    I personally found the ending to be great! It plays into Conclave's other major theme of individuals the Catholic church has excluded for their entire existence. This is represented throughout the movie in more subtle ways, but it is extremely relevant and meant to criticize the church's practices, while also taking a firm stance on positive change. That's how I read it, at least. I'm being as vague as possible for those who haven't seen it. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this movie from start to finish.

    • @WJHDetroit
      @WJHDetroit 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I took it a little differently.
      I viewed it from the conversation about how the church should be dealing with the challenges when they arrive not focusing on maintaining the past. Which is why Ralph Finnes doesn’t act when he confronts the issue (the ending). If the dilemma comes to light, the church will face it head on as an institution.
      The movie was awesome and I got a good laugh hearing people’s audible reactions when the ending was revealed lol.

    • @filmpositive6601
      @filmpositive6601 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @WJHDetroit That makes perfect sense to me, too, considering Ralph's character spent the whole movie facing these challenges head on and trying to keep the institution moving toward mutual progress. Great point!

      "The twist has scandalized a significant portion of conservative Catholic audiences. As the Catholic website Angelus News argues, “It turns out that God is playing jokes at their expense as well: the savior of the church of men is in fact a biological woman.” Conversely, some LGBTQ+ audiences have also called the twist a cheap trope that uses the character’s sexuality as a plot twist. As Slate argues, “It’s provocative without quite being coherent.” It’s mostly just a patronizing snub at the patriarchal leanings of the film’s villain, the racist Italian traditionalist Cardinal Tedesco. It’s driving the wedge in on a complicated social issue, but in secret. (END SPOILER)" -- Tyler Hummel, Geeks Under Grace

    I don't know, i think i liked it a bit better than you did actually :) IT wasn't that i was shocked at the ending and what happens, what i was shocked by was a movie i actually found surprisingly full of faith and it moved me. The evilness of human ambition is where I thought it was going, it sort of had something different to say- multiple things to say. The cast is great, but mainly because no one overdoes it every thing is measured...restrained. Thinking about how big Tucci, Fiennes, and Lithgow can get I was pretty amazed. 9 / 10.

    The audience is supposed to be surprised and also think for themselves rather than be spoon fed. I saw it in a cinema in the UK where the audience was surprised but not confused and there was a satisfaction along with the surprise and also I think it's not 'nothing' as it raises so many questions about the position of the catholic church on various issues. As Lawrence looking out of the window at the end conveys, it changes everything in a way.

    • @crobeastness

      The Church can't change her position on most of those matters. If she does, it will become a different religion. If you marry yourself to the times, you will find yourself divorced in the next.

    Great movie until the plot twist. You are right about the twist, it was not executed right. The surprise was too brief and the subject was quickly discarded from the storyline (the twist was cool, but it was too late in the movie and the subjected needed more exploration). The movie could have ended with the election of the new Pope.

      I would've liked to see more of a struggle for the main character to accept the ending twist. Given that at the end, it was shown that he does actually have a bit of ambition. Instead he was just like: dead pope was ok with this? Ok, I guess I'm ok with it too.
      I'd like to see him overcome his ambition after acknowledging it, and I'd like to see some flaws in "Innocente" as well. But show that despite "Innocente"'s flaws, he is in fact still the best person for the job.

    I saw it, it’s not a thriller! It’s a mystery: who wins the vote to be the next pope. Yes, it’s great at all the cinematic stuff. But the ending - not possible. Not for the obvious reason, but because these cardinals are cliquish, they’re not gonna vote outside that. My audience broke out in laughter at the big reveal, and it’s a very liberal community.

      @@ImpressionBlend Enjoyed it overall. I thought it was fairly serious in tone, but I understand the moments of humor that are causing some to rate it closer to a comedy. The acting was excellent of course, and I at least was in the ballpark regarding guessing the big twist. I was particularly fascinated by Isabella Rossellini's work. She made her presence felt in each of her brief moments onscreen, building beautifully to her big scene, which was surprisingly short dialogue-wise, but powerfully conveyed, to the point the small audience of about a dozen I was in did indeed applaud at the end of her outburst, just as I'd heard they've been doing at major showings of the film; this audible type of reaction is a rare occurrence at any screening. I wondered about her character's background and wanted to see much more of her. It will be interesting to see if she registers strongly enough with other viewers to get a nomination, but she'd be on my short list, no doubt.

    I’m Roman Catholic so all of the pageantry and horse trading is something I’ve grown up with. Brilliant film, but what REALLY got to me was the misogyny. How the nuns are nothing more than servant girls…and peasant servant girls at that. It is jarring how the three Abrahamic religions are so freaking misogynistic. The women don’t really register as human beings. They exist solely to wait on the men, to be seen and not heard. It’s so frustrating! Men benefitting from women’s free labor. They might as well be married to human men, as opposed to being “brides of Christ”.

    Emilia Perez was crap and The Brutalist was seriously over hyped and underwhelming.
    Conclave is the moving I was hoping the Oscars would reward but seeing it miss in the Cinematography and Director categories, AND seeing them nominate a train wreck like Emilia Perez so much, tells me the Oscars is not interested in merit anymore and something ugly is going on in the back rooms of the Academy.

    I don't understand the enthusiasm for this movie. Great cast. Pretty good script. Well acted.
    I have an interest in classical history and through that a bit of an interest in the Roman Catholic Church's history.
    Kind of boring with a series of twists that don't really hang together.
    I'm not sure if the simple fact that there was an awful lot of politicking going on to pick the new pope was supposed to be surprising.
    Despite the good acting and the attempt to frame the shots interestingly this was one of the dullest, least entertaining movies I have seen in a long time. It's not terrible, I'd give it a C , like a 60 out of 100.
    Really liked Ray Fiennes character constantly finding his eyes drawn to one of the damned in the Painting The Last Trump, suddenly realizing his chance for mercy is over as he is dragged into hell. Liked Fiennes moment of Pride being rewarded with an unrelated terrorist explosion from outside the Vatican.
    A lot of the rest was predictable and humdrum. Liked Isabella Rossilini with her women are people too moment.
    People seem to have loved this movie. Glad they enjoyed it so much.

    The ending was not completely out of the blue but seemed to be a hamfisted attempt to retell the perhaps apocryphal story of Pope Joan. Not clear if I was supposed be shocked or not. I wasn't. Kind of boring with no actual exploration of the issue in any way.

      @ImpressionBlend but without suspense or danger. The risk is all political, and centered on loss of power.

    Conclave needs to alert people about this movie. The end is so stupid. All priests after to undergo a full physical prior to confirmation and also in some instances, a blood test. The movie was very good until the totally stupid wok ending.

    Hard pass. Taking shots at the Catholic Church is shooting fish in a barrel. This lapse catholic will wait 10 years to see all the movies made about genocide in Gaza and how the world looked the other way. Mariana: did you hear how Trump blamed Zelenskyy for Russia invading them ? Sorry...I hate everything right now. Gonna scream.

      @ImpressionBlend I feel he is referring more to the movie than your review. You do after all criticise the movie for not digging deeper into questioning the institution. As an atheist, its always a relevant criticism but this movie is more a CHARACTER driven thriller rather than an INSTITUTIONAL criticism.

      Ukraine's Asov battalion did shell ethnic Russians in the Donbas for two years before the invasion from Russia. It is more complicated than Russia bad , Ukraine good. Learn the history -- the real history --- before you freak out.

      I just wish transgenderism wasn’t centered around Catholicism in a movie, I get that it’s just a movie but this is why there’s so much clash when it comes to transgenderism, just make a movie separate from this that doesn’t involve religion stop trying to force transgender down peoples throats with this type of stuff. It’s almost like making a movie about a butcher who works at a meat shop but just happens to be vegan

    I'll be skipping the **** outta this flick. I've heard about the "twist" and yeah, I can't wait for the outcry over this one. Hopefully it will be the tipping point for this insane woke BS to end once and for all.

    Great job by cast... Ending seemed forced and unnecessary. Till the end I would have recommended the movie... Now seems a political propaganda piece.
