does 3" refer to the stroke or bore of the cylinder?

oh it refers to the scale, 1inch to the foot. secondly why is there a bypass valve and an injector?

Harrison Long neither. It’s 3” Scale. 3” to the foot. So it’s 1/4 full size. :)

steam engines need to have two methods of feeding water in to the boiler , in case one fails
