The weapons platform at 4:22 is just a multi-laser... basically it's the Heavy Bolter equivalent of the humble Lasgun. So, super lethal to the basic mortal troops, but still just basically annoying mosquito bites to an armoured Space Marine ;-) Even in the table top Multi-lasers are pretty god awful, having medium strength, but piss poor AP, so most things outside of t-shirt saves get some form of armour save against them. (ie: in earlier editions, they were typically 'S6/ap -' weapons, meaning even 6+ save Ork Boyz got to try a saving throw against them!) The orbs in this story are of unknown Xenos design made up by the creator himself, though rather hilariously, they bear a striking similarity to an extremely obscure race from 1st edition called the Yu'vath. These were a race of highly psychic Xenos who combined their Warp powers with their technology The giant half-finished statue was likely meant to contain one? multiple? of the highly psychic entities contained within the Orbs. In the background, you can even see (likely) hundreds of the mask + spine apparatus as worn by the leaders of the rebel troopers. These mask/spine upgrades are heavily implied to be what gives the two 'leaders' their psychic abilities. (and thus, as they weren't "true" psykers, this is likely why the 5 Marines were able to so quickly & easily destroy them!) The dialog between the Orbs is: Orb 1 (on the rebel ship): "Brother, I have failed." Orb 2 (on the Strike Cruiser): "We have all failed." Orb 1: "The Astartes deny our touch." Orb 2: "You must return. Break your seal." Orb 1: "We will not survive." Orb 2: "You must. Take them." The Inquisitor then tells the Astartes officers, to "Recall them immediately!" However, in the few seconds of issuing his warning, that is enough for the entity within the Orb to break down the Inquisitors mental defenses, and possess him, hence the extreme reaction by his Astartes 'minders'. You don't play around with Warp possession! A single unprotected/corrupted psyker can potentially lead to an entire world, even an entire system becoming corrupted by the various entities that dwell within the Warp! (..and not just the daemonic armies of the Chaos Gods either, but even older & more terrifying gak like the Enslavers!) One very (in)famous story within the 40k background tells of how a Planetary Governor hid his beloved daughter from the Inquisition's Black Ships when they came to his world to collect & take away any & all unregistered psykers. The Governor's daughter was a latent psyker, who should have rightly been handed over to the Inquisition ships for restraint & testing. Instead, she was hidden away within the Governor's palace and secretly kept there. Without the proper training to control & restrain her powers, she was eventually taken by a powerful daemonic entity who used her mortal flesh to force it's way into the material plane. The possessed girl killed her family, including her father, before the powerful Daemon Prince who had possessed her broke free of it's mortal host, tearing open a rift to the Immaterium itself, and allowing the Daemonic armies of the Chaos Gods to invade the world. Before long, the entire world & it's population became the playthings of the Daemon Prince and it's legions, condemned to a nightmare of endless suffering and pain. Lost within the gleeful torment of the mortal populace, the daemonic legions did not notice the tiny shadow of a lone ship silhouetted in the dying world's star... a single torpedo would bring an end to the world's suffering, the killing fires of the Exterminatus a final act of mercy for the few surviving citizens. yeah space marines are x10 more powerful in the books than in the tabletop game. I remember a book where a space marine physically pushed back a tank, and he probably didn't even break a sweat. If a chapter master or Guilliman is in the story you know they can wrestle a titan to the ground. You can call it the book's plot armor or the game's game balance, but I prefer to see it as a drop of the Emperor's divinity channeled through Game Workshop's benevolent hand.
That marine's eye wes red because the outer "lens" was shattered by the psykers when they "squeezed" him. The red bits are the cams/sensors in the helmet's sensor suite.
This is an excellent short film, and nails the feel of 40K perfectly. I actually use it as an example of visual story telling in a communication class I teach. There's always been quite a big disconnect between the space marines (and to be fair all the factions) in the lore to how they work on the tabletop. In the lore, space marines are incredibly rare, only used for the absolute worst situations that no-one else can handle. Each marine is essentially a one man army that is extraordinarily difficult to kill. I remember reading somewhere a saying something along the lines of send one marine to suppress a city, one squad for a continent, and one company for a world. Of course they can't work like that in the game, or you'd never need to buy more than one box of tactical marines lol.
