We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S." 🎼🥁🎷🎺🎲
Rocco Prestia was an incredible talent, his death was not unexpected, he'd been ill for some time, but that doesn't make his loss any less shocking. This bass line is a standout.
To be a fly on the wall during the rock and roll heaven Class Of 2020 jam session: Rocco on bass, Neil Peart on drums, Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Chick Corea on keys. 🥺
Being a bass player and having worked on that bass line I can testify that it is no easy feat. You have to have the stamina and precision to play that tightly and exactingly. He was a major talent, RIP, Rocco.
Two of my favorite songs by Tower of Power are "Down to the Nightclub," and "You got to Funkafize," check them out! They have a funky sound that you rarely hear, even back in the 70's! They have a unique sound!
Still going since 1968. The baddest horn section ever! They are even more dynamic live. Drummer David Garibaldi and Rocco tearing up that funk. Rest in peace dear Rocco.
LOL - you started to smile about 4 seconds in - and it never stopped. (I do that everytime I hear that tune!!) The 'Tower of Power' horn section is legendary.
Yes, so glad you did this. Soul Vaccination should be next. So many great tunes and Dave Garibaldi is a drum legend! East Bay California Funk!! Oh, and those horns...the glorious horns!!
Paul Shaffer often featured the Power of Tower horn section on the David Letterman show way back in the day. He was clearly in funk heaven when they performed with his Late Night band.
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I remember seeing a lot of Tower of Power from Oakland - local boys. And one show in particular seeing Tower of Power and Santana along with another band or two playing at Filmore West. Back then you could see these bands for about $3.00 and they would play sometimes until 3 or 4 am in the morning - this would have been late 60s and early 70s. Tower of Power horn section was/is incredible as was the drummer Dave Garibaldi.
If only we would have listened to the wisdom along with the music. Alas, the music was rocking so hard that's all I heard back when this came out... Best horn band ever.
But not TOP "What is hip" is making it happen for 50 years and when some one leaves finding some who fits so the sound and energy is just the same. That is "HIP".
I don't know why, but probably because I feel the same way, but I got mad goosebumps when you said "THAT is the funkiest thing I've heard in a long time!" Soooooo good 🥲
TOP has been around for over 45+ years and has maintained the funk & R B sound. They have had many lead singers but have been able to keep its tight sound. Great horns 🎷 👏 driven by the groups leaders. You need to check out their extensive library. They will blow you away.
I Love this Band and have been listening from North Carolina for decades. And I came to the west coast to see them live. Seriously tight horn section. Funky funky more Funk. From Charlotte NC and recently moved to San Diego.
i like hearing the whole song, with your post review. i watched Tower of Power in the 70's on summer day concerts with Malo. The live show is great. People smoking weed and melo. It was a different time. Great times. Thanks for sharing this.
Now, the funkiest song ever written " Thank You(Falletnme be mice elf agin)" Sly & Family Stone. I know you reacted to Dance to a the Music but this was when bassist Larry Graham literally invented the slap bass. Intersting because both Sly and Tower of Power both from the Bay Area. Both had groundbreaking bassist with very different styles , though Sly came first and heavily influenced Tower.
Incredible song and sound. The "Tower of Power Horn Section" would play in concert with other bands, and you knew it was a 'must-see' concert if they were there. I saw them with Huey Lewis and the News once, and even though they hard horns in their band, these guys kicked the whole sound and concert up two notches. Someday you should check out HL&N, I think you'll enjoy their fun sound. More TofP!! Thanks for this reaction.
Tower of Power was my hope as a kid playing trumpet. I fantasized about trying out for the band and having them all floored at my skills. I didn’t even make it into the Stepstool of Meh.
The Pride of Oakland. Growing up in the east bay a lot of car 8 tracks were blasting these guys going down the street. Industry-wise the ToP horns section is Legendary and made appearances on many other artists recordings.
Was wondering if you would ever get around to Tower of Power....a favorite of mine from Oakland, CA.....Lenny Williams was the lead singer on many of their early hits....."So Very Hard To Go"....."This Time It's Real".....another lead singer, Rick Stevens sang on another classic, "You're Still A Young Man".........Tower of Power was known for their brass section.....their classic instrumental was "Squib Cakes.".....
You have to remember this album came out in early 70's...way ahead of their time ...great stuff and music like this reminds me how great bands and the music was tells me I was lucky to grow up back then and can honestly say the it was the music Era ever heard..BTW seen these guys when they just came out with Back to Oakland album and can say still the tightest band I've ever seen
I was in high school when this song came out. This was their 3rd album. Rick Stevens has just left the band. He was arrested for murdering drug dealers
Ought to be in anyone's discussion of top 10 all time . Combining the highest level of soul/funk/blues - with undeniable mastery . Their legacy continues at this very high level .
I saw them twice. The second time was a tune-up concert before the tour supporting their second album, Bump City. The song Down to the Nightclub was a party anthem in the Bay Area.
Just started listening to your reactions! Lovin you, lovin Tower of Power! Their horn section is NOTORIOUS. Just saw your reaction to Little Feat. TOP toured with them for their live shows, and recording. Jazz meets funk - What is Hip - undeniably under-known! Keep 'em comin' -- it's wonderful to hear my generation of music through you. Reminds me how fortunate i am to have had this kind of musical influence in my youth.
T.O.P. dropped out of sight for a long time due to a huge fight with their record label and could not get out of their contract. Then they started playing with a lot of other groups until the contract time ran out and now they are back. And OH, they are still so HIP!
No Doubt!! They put the already amazing Little Feat up to the next level during that series of performances. I saw Feat around that time period, however, thecTower of Power horn section was not with them in St. Louis.
Just looking at your reactions blowing your mind 😂 Legendary Horn Section Legendary 🎶🎶 celebrating their 50th year 2021 they should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 😍
This whole album is awesome (simply titled Tower of Power), 1973. Do the whole album! After this, check "Only so much oil in the ground", from their album Urban Renewal. Then check their album Back to Oakland. Baddest horn section of all time.
In the early '90s I worked as chief cook & bottlewasher at a small bar & grill in Walnut Creek, California, that had live music every night and a lot of big names coming through, often creating impromptu assemblages better than anything on big stages. Sometimes the Tower of Power horn section would pop in and ask to sit in with whatever band was playing, and they were always obliged.
Love TOP! From my old stomping grounds. I went to school with Lenny Pickett, band leader and sax player for SNL who was in TOP from '73 to '81. My favorite album of theirs is "East Bay Grease." Next please do "Sparkling in the Sand" and "You're Still a Young Man." Thanks, Chod!
Funkiest band in the land! I am from Oakland and have followed them from the beginning. Dave Garibaldi was Prince favorite drummer and Morris Day loved him as well
Emilio Castillo drove this hard working band out of the East Bay through a few different iterations. They bopped so hard it was incredible! This is Lenny fronting in the mid 70s with his sweet tenor. Earlier it was Rick Stevens with a growling baritone. Check out another Lenny hit... Soul Vaccination... and check out Rick in Bump City, and You're Still a Young Man. Different... but the same.
Saw T of P mid 70's in Toronto. Omg, if they didn't get you dancing in the aisles, nothing would! Must watch a live video Chod and keep your eye on Lenny Pickett (sax).......he'll get you smiling and Lenny Williams wonderful voice......love it!
I saw Garbaldi say that when they recruited Chester Thompson to join the band, this was his first work with them; he came in after the song was done and overdubbed his B3 track and his solo. He had a cover band and said that he didnt want to quit his band. They said "you cant do both..."
Saw this band in the early 70's at Lamar University, Beaumont Texas. This was back when all the bands would make the college circuit throughout the country. They featured an great horn section with fantastic sax players Lenny Pickett and the Funky Doctor.
Tower of Power is a another legendary group. My favorite lp.s were Back On The Block another funky hit on this lp. was Rock Baby a classic funky song we use to roller skate too & there were other hits from that lp. There other favorite was The Boys Night Out lp. This tidal song on the lp.was funky to + others. I got to see them twice & they never disappointed great group to see live.
I was in high school in the 70's when this song was released. TOP's first album was in 1969 East Bay Grease. Bump City their 2nd album introduced them to the public. The song was You're Still A Young Man with Rick Stevens lead singer. Lenny Williams shoe up on the 3rd album and released What Is Hip. Most do not know that Lenny was a singer for TOP. They only know him for his song Cause I Love You
So glad you experienced TOP. Any of their music is worth a listen. An amazing Horn band that few people know about is (Bill) Chase. You should check out "GET IT ON Live 1971'. 5 screaming trumpets and another amazing funk-fest. You will dig it!
Probably the greatest Horn sections of all time..... You're Still a Young Man So Very Hard to Go Sparkling in the Sand just a few more of their great hits. The best thing to come out of Oakland, CA
Oakland Pride!!! This is one awesome hole to dive into Chod - hope you do some more of them! One great one is from their 40th-anniversary concert, You're Still a Young Man featuring Dave Mathews and Lenny Williams. Living perfection!
Oakland's finest, TOP. I saw them more than any other group. Check out "Only so Much Oil", or You're Still a Young Man. Chester Thompson does an amazing organ solo on Squib Cakes.
YES Chod, you finally got to this band! I first heard them when I was in highschool. I saw them live and at one point in the concert the horn section snaked through the audience, as they played! You think your gonna see that today?!! Have a good time with their catalog. A good change of pace from this song is my favorite, So Very Hard To Go. Another great reaction bradda. 🤙😎
When my friend first introduced me to TOP and I heard this band (Fall 73/Spring74), he said "This band is tighter than a hummingbird's ass stretched over an oil drum." I have to admit he was definitely correct. That goes for then and now. 'Soul with a Capital S' is absolutely one of my favorites. My favorite album of theirs is 'In the Slot'. TOP - You've got to funkifize!!
This band is still touring and sound as good today as they did 50 years ago.
Yes & this is from their 50th anniversary show. There are are 7 members on stage here from the they were most popular 1972-1975 -. They just released the audio and video from the show on March 26th - this is What is Hip 48 uears after the song was released

52 years now right?
Correction 55 years now 🤭
Yes saw them last fall , still powerful too .
I believe Tower of Power was the most under-rated bands of all time. And they should be in the rock and roll hall of fame
We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. RIP ROCCO
I saw TOP twice, and Rocco was out for both concerts, been a fan for 30 + years.
Also lost guitarist Bruce Conte August 2021. RIP to Bruce and Rocco
Rocco Prestia banging out 16th notes for 8 minutes straight. :)
Being a bass player and having worked on that bass line I can testify that it is no easy feat. You have to have the stamina and precision to play that tightly and exactingly. He was a major talent, RIP, Rocco.

Yes!.: re Rocco!!
Listen to “So Very Hard to Go”. Was one of my very favorite songs from back in the 70’s!

East Bay Grease! Best Horns in the Biz!
"Soul Vaccination" is my all-time favorite from T.O.P. Simply incredible.
Now we are talkin'. Straight F'n Fire
Paul Shaffer often featured the Power of Tower horn section on the David Letterman show way back in the day. He was clearly in funk heaven when they performed with his Late Night band.
Now you know why this was so heavily requested. Pure funk right there. Trust me you will play that 100 times in the next year.
Yah Chod! Down this rabbit hole is Funkadelic, the Meters, Neville Brothers, George Clinton, Brothers Johnson, Sly, Curtis Mayfield and many others.
I love watching all you youngins discovering these SOLID GOLD NUGGETS that I’ve been listening to for 30 years.

Arguably the most important Verse in Rock History, "There's one thing you should know
What's hip today
Might become passe"
That doesn't apply on these guys they will always be hip 😉
@@danielolson5378 Of course not.

Drove from Eugene, Oregon to Palo Alto, CA to see them at a small club about 50 years ago. Worth the 600 mile drive.
Now, the funkiest song ever written
" Thank You(Falletnme be mice elf agin)" Sly & Family Stone. I know you reacted to Dance to a the Music but this was when bassist Larry Graham literally invented the slap bass.

Ha, Ha, I can so relate! I too was a trumpet player that had that same dream!
Gotta love that Hammond B3 organ. And T.O.P. always had a smoken horn section.

Okay. I got to see TOP as the opening act for...Tina Turner in Lake Tahoe. Now that was a very hip & funky night!
saw them live,,,,, TWICE in the 70s did not stop movin' and groovin' the whole time!!!! Hell of a show!!!
It's what you call movin' with the groovin'. The Ides of March also come to mind, with their hit, 'Vehicle'.
Saw them at Tipitina’s in New Orleans in the early 80’s. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to!
I've heard they put on an incredible show - pure performers!
Yes! I was blessed to hear them first when I was a kid. They got me interested in playing the trombone in school.
TOP got me playing the trombone as well.
Ought to be in anyone's discussion of top 10 all time .

Gov't Mule does a great guitar based cover of this song. Warren Haynes knocks it out of the park live.
Warren is amazing
Get the fuck out I need to hear this
Check out Warren and Marcus King cover this....cookin!!
