The sax player is Lenny Pickett, currently the music director for Saturday Night Live. A great funk R&B sax player known for his amazing playing in the altissimo register.
They used to have the tighest rhythm section in the biz with Francis Rocco Prestia (bass r.i.p.) and David "DG" Garibaldi on drums!! You can never go wrong with these guys!
This is my ALL TIME favorite band. I've seen them in concert about 40 times. They played this song at a gig at my community college. During that funky jam in between the song, the whole brass section left the stage. Only the keyboard, drummer, and guitar player were left playing for about 5 minutes. I kept hearing a bass, but he also left. I then noticed Chester Thompson (keyboard) almost doing a tap dance sitting down! It was HIM playing the bass part! It sounded tight. A funk machine with only a few nstruments. That's how tight they were. They are like a cloth with tightly woven fibers to make one beautiful musical fabric. They sound even BETTER live. Their vocal harmonies are stellar too.
These guys put on a show last month in Greenville, SC. All the hits, including Diggin on James Brown. The anchor of the band is Doc Kupka on baritone sax.
TOP are the GOATS. The tightest band in the land. Too much greatness in one place. David Garibaldi on drums, now that’s someone that you need to cover Chod. Just the best that there ever was. 🎸🎶🎷🥁
Hey man, aloha from Hawaii. Glad you liked my suggestion and I am also the one that sent you Squib Cakes a year ago. Yes, Chester Thompson who wrote Squib Cakes and Ebony Jam, plays bass pedals as soon as his organ solo starts. He is a monster player. Happy you enjoyed David Garibaldi on drums...that rhythm section of him, Chester, Rocco and Bruce Conte were ULTRA TIGHT.
Aloha and thank you, Mitchell. A couple friends were lucky enough to take drum lessons from David and my old girlfriend sang in a band with Bruce (RIP) and Chester… all really good peeps as well as musicians
Wow that's great music! Unfortunately, I only saw Tower Of Power live once when they played an open air here in the "Hamburg Stadtpark" in Germany. It was a real party with funk, jazz and jazz rock numbers that blew me and the entire audience away. One of the best funkiest parties I've seen. Thanks for sharing and all the best @all from hamburg (germany)
Another one of my favorite songs. If you haven't watched their 50 year anniversary concert yet, get you headphones on and enjoy the whole concert on You Tube. By the way, my favorite drummer and bass player combination is David Garabaldi and Rocco Prestia. Unfortunately Rocco passed away last year but was one of the greatest funk bass players of all times but just kind of laid back and grooved with the drummer so he didn't always get the credit he deserved. Now you got me all riled up so I'm going to have to stay up and watch their 50th anniversay concert all over again. I'm not sure how old you are but I think you were born about 30 years too late.
Damnnnn,, This is a straight out JAM Session1 They are going offff. So tight. In the Pocket don't describe how deep they are in your pocket. Yes Sirrrrr.
Chod, thanks to me finding you Tower of Power reaction videos a couple of days ago, I checked their web site and found they are going to be performing live in Denver on Friday. My wife and I now have tickets for the 16th row, dead center stage to see them at the Paramount Theater. I am so excited. My first concert with them was back in the 70's and have seen them multiple times since then. I think I remember you live in CA. What part of CA do you live? Tower of Power originated in Oakland so you should be able to find a concert to check them out live.
Very much in the same style of squib cakes off of back to Oakland, check out walking up hip street from urban renewal January 1975 which was a musical sequel to squib cakes in prequel to ebony jam
They should be in the music hall of fame there getting rob of that funky music best horn section In the world so much funky music listen to the song funk the dumb stuff
Check out a band that is influenced heavily By TOP. They are called ..The Fearless Flyers Nate Smith d Joe Dart b Cory Wong g ....Mark Letteri g....They often combine with ..Delta Force... a 3 horn section. ......Vulfpeck, and Snarkey Puppy are 2 others. Great Funk musicianship is alive, and well.
Chester Thompson always played his spots without the bassist. From "Squib Cakes" to "Walking Up Hip Street" to this one, CT has always been the funkiest, "churchiest" organist ever to funk up a band.
Dave G! the groove minster. Seen TOP 7 times, they BRING it every time. Another ya gotta react to is Brother to Brother by Gino Vannelli with the late great Mark Craney on drums!!!
Elton John used the Tower of Power brass for The Bitch Is Back and also for the lesser known song "Stinker" which is I think a better showcase for the Tower of Power brass. So, I share it for you here. th-cam.com/video/xCgluJnO7DI/w-d-xo.html
Chester Thompson plays organ pedals during his solo. The rest of the song features Francis Rocco Prestia on electric bass guitar.
Chester Thomas is definitely playing the foot bass on his solos .. one of the greatest to do it..

Etta James and tower of power played with the Grateful Dead on NYE 1982. These guys just sit in that pocket 🎶🎵
great selection !
I love your using Buckethead for backing jam tracks, me too!
Damnnnn,, This is a straight out JAM Session1 They are going offff. So tight. In the Pocket don't describe how deep they are in your pocket. Yes Sirrrrr.
I once saw these guys open for Cheech & Chong, Nov., 1973, Detroit.
By far, the strangest 2-act bill I ever witnessed.
