I’m 69 years old and I have been a TOP fan since they played my high school dances in 1970 and 71. Yes! David Garibaldi is a phenomenon in this cut. And Chester Thompson on the B3 organ…c’mon! It does not get better. Seriously, Squib Cakes has been my #1 jam ever since I first heard it. It was so fun to see your reaction as a first time listener.

I have EVERY cd they've recorded, even rarities. Seen them in concert over 25-30 times. Never disappoint and always have a blast like hearing them for the first time. I even have many of their blu rays. So yeah, I'm a big fan.
What I would love for them to come out with is a 5.1 discrete surround sound studio recording where each speaker produces a brass instrument. It would be phenomenal! I know the concert blu rays are 5.1 but it's a stage recording. Not the same.
      Crossing my fingers!🤞

This is my favorite band! First time seeing them live was 1974 when this album was released. You talk about the drummer, you must go see them live! The drummer, David Garibaldi, is amazing! When he drums, he is so smooth, he looks like he doesn't even work up a sweat! I am not a drummer, but what he does is work! I love the band for the horns, but all pieces fit perfectly! Do go see them live, or watch them on TH-cam live, you will not be disappointed.

Aloha from Hawaii. WOW, didnt think you would get to this so quickly! Thank you very much. I am a keyboardist here in Hawaii, playing funk...r&b since 1974. I was in a few bands that played Squib Cakes and much of the Tower of Power repertoire...had the Hammond B-3 and Leslie Speaker back in the day...and figured you would appreciate this tune. Incidentally, this song was written by the organist/keyboardist for the band, the great Chester Thompson. He stayed with Tower for more than a decade and then left the group to play keys with Santana for many years. One note on Squib Cakes...at the 4:07 mark when the organ solo begins, the late bassist Rocco Prestia drops out and it is all bass pedals. Remarkable playing by Chester CT Thompson. Anyway, thanks for playing this and keep up the great work...Aloha!

The first time I saw TOP live, after the concert I left exhausted. They literally took my breath away. You HAVE TO see them live in concert. They will blow your mind. After watching Lenny Pickett play his infamous sax solo on the song, "Knock Yourself Out", I knew I wanted to play sax. Talk about inspiration. Even after 50+ years, they are still as good as ever.

Hey Chod. So kool to see you stoked. TOP has the baddest horn section in the land but they had (and still do) have a pretty damn good rhythm too. Saw the boys at Lake Tahoe Feb 11th and they did Squib....David Garibaldi is still with the band ....He is a technician....the wear pattern on his snare is so tight....unbelievable. If you haven't already check out some his his youtube videos where he is teaching about his style. Chester Thompson on the B3 was so great...check out some of videos of Squib on here. his facial expressions while playing are priceless and his feet move so fast on the bass pedals. I have been a TOP fan since 1969 and they still are my favorite band. So glad to see young guys like you discovering how good of a band they were and still are. They have probably not played in Bakersfield too much over the years but dial into their tour schedule and go see them where they are closest to you...Tahoe/Sac or even Yoshi's in Oakland. You will get a "Soul Vaccination"....by the way another one of their songs you might want to check out...Some of the live versions are better than the studio versions.

We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S." 🎼🥁🎷🎺🎲

It's great to hear you expressing the appreciation that you have for Garibaldi's mind blowing syncopation. Here's a good example - 6:04 This is were my drummer mind gets a little blown, because Garibaldi's got 4 beats going at the same time, with the snare and cymbal bell doing a latin type jazz beat, changing it up as it goes along, while his bass drum goes "kaTHUMP, kaTHUMP, kaTHUMP, kaTHUMP... and the hi hat's just snip, snip, snipping away, like he's got 4 brains in synch.

Great reaction and as a total classic jazz and soul fanatic, agree wholeheartedly. Totally my kind of thing too. Completely agree it hits in all points - the transitions and musicians are stunning. I wonder how much was rehearsed and how much was just improvised? Incredible. Certainly don’t see this kind of thing today. Amazing tune that I’m not sure I had heard before despite being a fan - and now, dang it - I need to go spend money on some more Tower of Power! Homage to Mimi and all the talented dudes that have ever been with the Tower of Power. I love Tower of Power. One of my fav bands. I've seen em four or five times. Dave Garibaldi on drums, Bruce Conti on guitar, Rocco Prestia on bass, Chester Thompson on organ, man, that rhythm section ruled, they ruled. They all felt the groove so much in the same way, it was uncanny. I got to meet Rocco when they played the county fair up at Marine World Africa USA in Cali. He was super nice and I got a photo with him. They have so many good tunes. I have all but maybe one of their albums, they're great. I've been listening to these guys since I was in High School, that would be 70's. I could list 30 tracks for ya right now that I think are must listen to tracks. Next up should be Only So Much Oil In The Ground, What Is Hip, Soul Vaccination, Maybe It'll Rub Off, It's Not The Crime, Give Me The Proof....the list goes on and on and on.

I think the origin of the name "Squib Cakes" came from keyboardist/writer Chester Thompson. Chester and another band member at the time were discussing how a lady with a nice booty looked as she was walking down the street. He called the motion of it Squib Cakes. Cracks me up! (Pun intended) I think this is mentioned in the liner notes of their greatest hits cd. Still one of my all-time favorites by them after all these years.

So that is the origin of Squib Cakes huh? I knew Chester Thompsons wrote the piece and I never thought it would have someone to do with a woman's boots. But it makes sense now. Nonetheless it still ranks as one of TOP's best works.

I'm a retired high school music teacher and as you might remember every time a kid walks it the band room it's like a magnet to the drums ... And they sit down and play their one boom - boom - chick 12:02 beat and think they're wonderful....
I said .... Everybody OFF THE DRUMS ! .... And handed out then first opening 8 measures of drums from Squib Cakes .... Followed by : When you can play this CLEAN ... YOU MIGHT BE CHOSEN AS A JAZZ BAND DRUMMER ....!!
Well you kind of know .... Most didn't come back ..... they didn't like playing accents on the "and" and not right on the beat ....lol...
But a few did and went on to really chew down more and more quality drumming.
Drumming that complimented the arrangement not themselves.....
They still Thank me to this day . 😊

One of TOPs jazzier tracks and a great choice!! Take a look at their latest album...Soul Side of Town. There is great video of them playing the title track on Jules Holland!! BTW, the drummer's name is David Garabaldi. There are drummers who might be better at gut bucket rawer funk. But no one can touch him at the more sophisticated jazz funl. No one. The man can actually play 2 grooves at once.

This is only my favorite studio jam of ALL TIME!!! I first heard it back in the day with NO introduction on a Jazz radio station (WRVR)
The whole thing was killing me; The Drummer, the horns; but that ORGAN… the baddest most exciting organ solo I had ever heard! When the DJ came back on he said, “Well it looks like R&B is getting closer to Jazz every day!
That was ‘Squib Cakes’ by Tower Of Power!”
I asked out loud, talking to the radio, “The ‘What Is Hip’
Tower Of Power?!” And honest to goodness, the DJ said, “Yes, The ‘What Is Hip’ Tower Of Power!!!”
I went out and bought the

Living Legend, Chester Thompson, burning that Hammond B3. The band walks off stage except for drums (DG), guitar (Bruce C.). Chester playing bass pedals together with David and Bruce is just incredible! Oh, these guys were young, in their 20's at the time. The only other artist out there at the time, as tight as TOP was James Brown!

Please again, I would love for you to react to the track “Boys of the bay” really intense, lots of horns, Serious drumming, and all they are know for, you will not be disappointed, no one has done this reaction yet, think it is a gem! Richard Elliott who leads on the saxs and Greg Adams on the trumpet are former members. Richard is a beast on the saxs, he has his own solo career and is well up there, you will see what I mean!! All of them are amazing!
Anyone please support me in this suggestion!
