  • My nerves where high this jump and it really showed in my rushed, frantick and poor performance. It is likley the cause of my instabillaty at deployment.
    At 5,000ft AGL I move back from the instructor and turn 90 degree's ready to deploy. At 1:37 in the video I then lose control for a terrifying 12 seconds before finaley getting my chute out at 3000ft AGL. I managed to return to the DZ with little trouble. My instructor however was forced to land in the middle of the horse track, hence his upset words at the end of the video.

    It's all about relaxing and arch. You did ok but look tense. Breathe... Relax. And at pull time "arch, reach, look, throw, relaaaaaaax"
    Solid work though... Remember you're still better than the 99% of people who never jump out of a plane.

      Sandy Heesom skydiving is only risky in the sense that if you don’t do everything properly you will almost certainly die... that is not the reason the majority of skydivers do it... the bliss feeling of flying through the sky is unmatched to many things and unfortunately the people who are too scared to try it will condemn it as stupidity...

      It took me a lot of jumps to just relax in free fall and bloody hell it helped with stability and turning once I could relax. Sometimes on the plane I just tell myself before I jump "hard arch and accept the fall". Accept basically just being chill out and accept it.

    • @MikeRoam2
      @MikeRoam2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like to remind myself that "relax" in skydive means loose muscles, not chill brain. Of course brain is active, and it can tell muscles to go limp enough for good arch.

    Can I just say that looks like a really scary place for a DZ. Its just trees and water for miles.

    • @flybeep1661
      @flybeep1661 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Doesn't really matter, if the drop is good and you pull at normal height there shouldn't be an issue on this DZ. Still I wonder which I would prefer, landing in trees or landing in a city. My DZ has a very large landing zone but has a city on its western side. Me and two others were once dropped way too far out west and couldn't see the ground due to total cloud cover (it's a Europe DZ). Pilot thought he had only wingsuit flyers with him (was last load, not full load) and typically wingsuit flyers want an exit way further from the DZ than normal. Pilot dropped us way out about 3 miles from the DZ. I had a very strong back wind flying a crossfire 109 but the distance was still a gamble. One of us took an alternate landing zone while I took the gamble and the other followed me. I barely made it to the edge of the DZ flying in deep brakes. This is the vid from th pov of the guy who followed me th-cam.com/video/pKLx7nE2Tfs/w-d-xo.html . Looking at that city below with no options to the side because the wind was so strong it would have just pushed me sideways I think I would prefer landing in trees like the guy in this vid than the option of needing to land in the city. I went to highschool there and knew the city, it was nothing but narrow streets, one small central plaza surrounded by buildings and a church. Very bad landing options.

      It's where I did my course. Fantastic place with amazing instructors.
      I had to do stage 5 four or 5 times too. No fault of instructors - they were great. Body control is hard and you don't get long to practice it!
      Pilot always dropped us off on right place so always landed in the middle. Never even thought about the trees. This jump just looks unlucky

    • @rnzoli
      @rnzoli 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kurtsvensson4362 no, I disagree :) in worst case, a skydiving instructor can save himself alone, because he has his own chute. With an aircraft, if the student crashes it, the instructor will be in the crashing aircraft too....
      From one aspect however, it's true that skydiving has more injuries that flying with an aircraft. The reason is wind, uneven terrain, so strained ankles, smaller bruises are far more common, than in flight instruction :)

    • @kurtsvensson4362
      @kurtsvensson4362 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rnzoli You do realise that the flight instructor has full control of the aircraft in case the student does something stupid right?

    • @rnzoli
      @rnzoli 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kurtsvensson4362 most of the time, yes. And then there are other times, when the students can make suddent (serious) mistakes in a split second and the flight instructors don't have enough time to correct by taking over control. This happens when flying close to the ground, landing or takeoff. You can read such a recent accident here: data.ntsb.gov/carol-repgen/api/Aviation/ReportMain/GenerateNewestReport/102959/pdf
      (should lead to WPR21FA170).
      Another big gotcha for flight instructors is to fly with experienced pilots. I personally know 2 instructors, who sustained life-threatening injuries, because they trusted their student too much, based on their prior history. So by the time they took control was too late to prevent a crash. Interestingly both accidents happened over rising terrain, one leading to a stall and spin, the other was a CFIT because they entered a cloud layer on the side of the mountain.
      So I think there may be a higher student-injury rate per jump in skydiving, but there may be a higher instructor-injury rate per flight in flight instruction. I am not sure though, whether such statistics exist or not.

Instructor having to pull at 3k left him quite low, and it's dangerous since it gave him little time to react if his main had an issue and he had to cutaway. But, he had little choice as he had to ensure the safety of his student first.

      Don't flail, smooth chest and shoulder turns, don't swing the arms to turn. That's just going to make you unstable until you have been comfortable up there for a while. You can see a lot of flailing in the video, the legs or feet are kicking constantly, knees are dropping, arms flailing. AFF4 is the harder one of the two, AFF5 should be pretty straight forward, practice body position and that's all it is.
      Obviously pulling at the right altitude is a pass, everything below is an automatic fail.

      i would, he was flailing and trying to push the air with his hands to try to turn, and had a pretty bad canopy deployment. what he needs to do is RELAX and arch as much as he can so that he maintains stability and make small adjustments to maintain heading and turning.

    Is it really that hard to judge altitude when you're up there? I knew exactly how high i was when i went skydiving. I could see objects, buildings, cars, and what looked like ants now turning into people. Then I knew it was time to pull the chute. It's not that hard. You can see the ground. Is it not natural for people to have 4th dimensional perception while skydiving because we were not meant to fly? Is it because we're in a forbidden zone and we were never intended to fall from that high? Why is it I seem to have excellent ground/depth perception while almost everyone I talk to doesn't?

    • @rubberbandman200
      @rubberbandman200 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, when I did my first aff jump I knew my altitude the entire way down, even though I forgot all of the hand signals lol, sensory over load lol, and now I'm waiting for the cold weather to go away to start jumping again

      Perris? I'm going to be AFFing too. I'm waiting for winter too lol. Yeah i forgot to check my altimeter when I tandem jumped, but I always was altitude aware. I know how high up we were the whole time. Have you seen that video of two skydivers who forgot to pull their chute and their AAD fired at 100 feet up?

    • @rubberbandman200
      @rubberbandman200 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Green no, I live in michigan, and yes I did see that video. Crazy how if the aad didn't fire they would have gone splat

    • @jordans92169
      @jordans92169 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only been one time but when I jumped I was so entranced by the free fall I completely forgot to pull until my instructor told me. I think I would have eventually but it probably would have been at an altitude where if something went wrong I wouldn't have had time to fix it. Also I have very poor depth perception so some one like me needs an altimeter I don't think everyone does though.

    A lot of comments on here telling the guy (girl?) to just relax, and I absolutely agree. Something that always worked for me was popping a couple of xanax about an hour before takeoff, then smoking half a joint immediately before I climb into the plane.

    • @Reaperdeathpunch
      @Reaperdeathpunch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just saying, it's actually against regulations to be on any kind of drug when skydiving, so if they are watching you smoke a joint, they are supposed to stop you from making the jump.

      Some people react like they are in a swimming pool. If you think about it, after 5 jumps you have only had 5 minutes of freefall experience. I wouldn't call it a total fail, but safety wise he needs to calm down a bit.
