I like that you two were able to catch so many Easter Eggs throughout this show. They must have really cared to put so much of the source material in this show. As an ABC myself I either don't know all of this mythology or don't remember it since I haven't watched those movies since I was a young child. I also thought of the movie Forbidden Kingdom as that was one of the latest Western interpretations of this story but I take issue with that movie so glad this show is around.

Yes, in America, we have different classes we go to so everything is kept in our lockers and backpacks. We don't stay in one room with our own desk except sometimes as little kids in elementary school. Our class sizes also depend on the area. City public schools may have more students than in the suburbs. But it's usually about 20 kids. The Monkey King and Journey to the West stories are so popular, they're told again and again. I enjoy watching them but I like learning about new stories and myths, which is why I like a lot of the random shows streaming. Like the one about White Snake, even though that show wasn't great. Loved hearing you react!
yes you got it right, in the united states in high school we switch classes and typically use lockers to store our backpacks, textbooks not being used for the current class, jacket(if it is winter), and extra supplies and miscellaneous items as well. i had no idea that people stay in the classrooms and the teachers move around in china, i honestly couldn't imagine🥲

Lockers are mostly a high school thing in North America. In most larger universities in North America, the students would also just carry their books around, whether or not they lived off-campus. Lockers wouldn't be very helpful in many universities, considering classes may be a 10 minute walk away from each other, or occasionally even on a different campus.

Every grade in America has lockers. In America you don't stay in the same classroom all day. The day is sectioned into 7 or 8 classes of 40ish minutes and each subject is in a different room. So instead of having to lug 6-7 books around all day you go to your locker and drop off the book from the finished class and pick up the next one. Also store your jacket, umbrella etc.. so you don't have to carry them around either. You can leave books in your locker overnight that you don't need to take home.

We didn't have lockers yet, because we really didn't have that many classroom switches, but Junior High and High School all had a lot of class switching (pretty much every hour), so we had lockers. My first college had some lockers to but most people didn't really use them unless they had to go really far across campus.

I never read journey to the west but I lived hearing Jessie and Lee explain some of the backstory, and you can totally see where they got the story for the original dragon ball.

I've read a couple of English translations of "Journey to the West" and they always call Monkey's staff "wishing staff" so I didn't even know it had a name. So thank you for that too. Also White Snake/Green Snake was mentioned. I've seen two versions. One with Cheung Man Yuk and a more recent one with Charlene Choi (who I think is the funniest actress alive...perfect comedy timing). I seem to remember that both Donnie Yen and Stephen Chow have played Sun Wu Kong. Yes, please carry on with this show. And thank you again. I forgot to mention. There is a sandstone statue of the Indian Guan Yin in the British Museum. I much prefer the female Chinese iteration and have a number of statuettes of her.
the american channel Overly Sarcastic Production did a series of videos telling the story of Sun Wukong and The Journey to the West in a very entertaining way (his powers and a lot of details are probably not plainly given there though, but if you're a western audience who wants to get a grasp at what it's all about it's a nice way to get a glimpse at chinese folklore, they also do a lot of videos on various folktales, mythologies, legends, storytelling tropes, and history)
There are so many Monkey Kind adaptations that I knew it was a major historical work, but I never knew the details. I was discussing if we had anything like that in America. The best I came up with was Johnny Appleseed and John Henry oh and perhaps Sleepy Hollow.

In the Ji Gong TV series we grew up watching, he drinks all the time and looks drunk but he's actually sober and always helping people around, he has a nickname called "the Living Buddha".
in europe (at least from my belgian experience) we would have desks that open in primary/elementary school because we have one class and the teachers go from class to class. In secondary/middle + high school we have lockers because most teachers (3 grade and up and science teachers) have their own class/lab and the students go from class to class, but you have to bring your own lock and when i was in 2nd grade (13 y-o) every other day a kid would ask for the big wirecutters because they couldn't open their lock (forgot the code or lost the keys). At University we didn't have a locker anymore, we just moved building so much it would have been no use (they might have been available in our Faculty building but there were so many of us and everyone used their laptops anyway (if they showed up at all), i think they were available in art school but i got used to carying all my junk and leaving some projects at my desk that i didn't bother (plus there were like 2 of them for the class so i'd have to share, too cumbersome for not much)
Yeah, I can confirm it’s the same for most American high schools. You have your locker because you change classrooms. Although I know a lot of people who just carried all their books in their backpack rather than go to their locker.

Jessie, do you have a book recommendation for Journey to the West of kids version? I've been thinking of introducing it to my daughter. I remember growing up watching TV shows every summer. It's pretty much everyone in our generation did in summer time.
This series was okay, but I wish they'd called it something else, because it had nothing to do with Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel. It not only lacked the novel's central theme about self-hatred, but also lacks the story structure that made the novel so unique. A thing that was a massive plot twist at the end of the novel is revealed from moment one in the show and changes everything about the story. It felt totally unrelated to the graphic novel and just an excuse for some Chinese-style fantasy action and to capitalise on the popularity of "Shang Chi" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once". Which normally I'd be all for. But the novel wasn't an action story and was about something much deeper and more meaningful. The show felt like it just didn't get what the novel was about. I hope if they end up adapting "Boxers and Saints" that it will be a lot more faithful to Yang's work than this was.

jessie's mandarin is good, but her interpretation of story about theft is wrong. Sun Wukong did steal the pole. And the kid stole the jacket. There is no need to find legal loophole to say that it's not a theft/robbery

Yeah my public school was about 30 per class. My graduating class being 520 kids and almsot 2500 kids in the school. I was just in the suburbs too.
