    ●Why did Oiran walk parades?
    th-cam.com/video/w_O77dWhyAM/w-d-xo.html
    If you’ve ever seen an 花魁 Oiran prostitute in Japanese anime or movies, you might have noticed that they tie their obi belts in the front.
    Usually the ties come to the back, so why did Oiran do it this way?
    Oiran were the top rank Yujyo prostitutes within the government approved red light districts called 遊郭 Yukaku. From a very young age, they are trained to acquire various skills such as music, art, tea ceremony, literature, board games, etc., to become the ideal woman.
    These women of beauty and culture were the authority and pride of the Yukaku district and it would cost millions of yen worth of money to meet them just once. An Oiran could even reject men she didn’t like.
    The jobs of Oiran were to be as beautiful and gorgeous as possible, so this is why they wore flamboyant kimono, super tall shoes, and decorative hair ornaments, and tied their obi in the front to make it look more stunning.
    Only women like Oiran who had multiple servants who would do everything for her will be able to wear such fashion, because having an obi tie in the front means you can not do anything such as house chores.

    Fun fact: The trend of wearing the obi tied in the front started with the noblewomen, who tied theirs in the front to show that they didn't need to work. The Oiran and Tayū quickly adopted this, and given their fame, the noblewomen got offended and started wearing their obi in the back in order to NOT have their looks compared to those of courtesans.

    It’s amazing that prostitutes were held in such high honor and esteem for once! They’re people too! We are so used to seeing prostitutes living on the fringes of society, standing on street corners, jumping into strangers cars out of desperation for money for drugs. Also, seeing them get very badly beaten or killed by some random sadist who is not in prison yet… Thank you for sharing a refreshing change to that stereotype! I respect the honor Japanese people seem to give one another!

    • @luisfuentes3846
      @luisfuentes3846 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t get it twisted, poorer prostitutes getting used like trash happened/happens in both feudal and modern Japan. The culture of Oiran, which was State approved by the Shogunate, was something of the highest of luxuries and thus required that Oiran be at the pinnacle of femininity to please their consorts and compete with other Oiran. They were courtesans, not common whores, entreating them wasn’t just for pleasure but for status and in feudal Japan status was everything, just expressed differently than in the West (ie Europe and US).

  • @CharlieApples
    @CharlieApples ปีที่แล้ว

    It was not just to look stunning, but because elaborate obi knots usually require a second person to help you get dressed by tying it in the back where you can’t reach. Japanese prostitutes had to be able to get redressed on their own, and not take an hour to do so, so they would tie their obi in the front.
    This directly contrasted with maiko and geisha, who were not prostitutes, and who always tied their obi in the back with the help of an assistant. This is the high class formal way to tie an obi.

The point is that I don' t believe that since everyone has the right to rest and I want to get that doubt out of my head.

      @@enniruth The knot is still a bit complicated to make regardless of it being on the fromt so that may not be the case.
      As for memoirs of a geisha, I'd recommend reading "geisha, a life" by mineko iwasaki (whom the author of memoirs interviewed for his book) if you are interested in the subject and would like to get a more honest and less...exotic depiction of geishas.
