I feel sorry for the woman that had to endure this i can't imagine what they felt but i think that it should not been forgotten but i know it's a film but it potrayed the dark side of the prostitutes life. Keep it up Shogo 👍
Idk man, I really hate when people talk about the "dark side" of these kinds of things. It is like saying "the dark side of hell". It wasn't just a dark side, it was darkness itself. I am a man so I can't really imagine it myself, but even if you imagine anyone close to you being in such a situation is horrifying. Living in such a destitute situation where you are treated like a commodity, something can be bought, and having no choice is absolutely terrifying. Even the pride and prestige I feel that is attrubuted to the high ranked ones that Shogo talked about in previous videos, I feel like that is just a mask of what is truly underneath. Nobody should ever live like this.
Considering the anime Demon Slayer is now airing with an arc that's set in Yoshiwara, I'm curious to know how you think they handled it compared to One Piece, Gintama or Samurai Champloo. They even depict an Oiran Dochu in one scene.
@@ssmuccini they're incompatible. So much more to describe yujyo life than just to draw and animate them based on old paintings. "A courtesan with flowered skin" showed irony of red light district within protagonist sadness. Imagine geisha women being in showroom just like mannequins. I highly recommend this movie.
This movie is a gem. Too bad I watched it without English subs. Another movie I would like to recommend is The Life of Oharu. You can see the transition of fallen noble palace lady, and how cruel the society is. Memoirs of Geisha used to be my favourite, but the author manipulated the stories from real Geiko. So the movies/book is out from my list. If you want the real version of it, look for book from Mineko Iwasaki.
Would you be so kind as to provide spoilers for the end of Hanayoi Dochu, please? I wanted to watch it, but it seems no one is streaming it (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc), and I'm not really in a position to pay $100 for 1 DVD. Just out of curiosity, are DVDs always so expensive in Japan? Every Japanese movie I've looked to buy, costs $100+. I think the cheapest I was ever able to get was an old Gackt movie, Moonchild, for $40-something.
Prostitution is a dirty business all around. No place in no historical moment is exception. Prostitution has been correctly defined as human meat market and there's no reason why in Japan, modern or otherwise, this fact was ever different. All stories, orally narrated, cinema or written, that say otherwise, trying to portray prostitution as glamorous, are pure fiction. No exception.
This is why I am in support of legalizing and regulating sex work in the favor of the sex workers. In the past these regulations were geared towards the johns or the pimps as mentioned in this video, but the end goal should be to create safe working conditions for everyone regardless of profession.
I wouldn’t say it doesn’t have a place in history. It is after all considered to be one of the oldest occupations and their presence is noted on every modern culture and past cultures and civilizations. I also listen to this Utau song called “Yoshiwara Lament” by Asa and Kasane Teto were the protagonist sings about what is like being a prostitute in Yoshiwara and hopes someone would buy her as an escape from her living hell. It’s a beautiful song but it’s very sad and depressing.
Sakuran very much depicts Yoshiwara as a gilded cage. A very beautiful gilded cage, but one where women had no freedom though. There's literally an excess of imagery of bars/cages and goldfish bowls in the film. If people cannot see past the style and aesthetics of the film, they're not watching the film right.
I completely agree. Ive seen it many times, as I own the DVD and I have to say that the signs are all there in plain sight. Eventhough they are metaphorical, they are still obvious. I enjoyed the movie, I just thought it was sad that such a shitty time in history was made to look so aspiring. It really was awful for those girls to live this kind of daily life.
Thus I heard, during the filming the actress herself recalls her nightmare similar to her character Asagi. She, too, is "sold" to TV entertainment as Child Actress and, of course, her mom was agent. Reason behind, to please her stepfather.
Spoilers! Fun fact for demon slayers watchers: If you watched the full video you may notice why the creator of Demon slayer changed the Red Light district arc to Entertainment Arc. Because of the censorship of Red Light district they had to find a name that was some how related to the Arc so they chose Entertainment District because it was also mentioned in the video that men went to Yoshiwara for entertainment.
Eh. The movie was based on a book written by a white American male and the writing reeks of "exotic Japonisme." I believe it was based on the experiences of an actual famous geisha and she wasn't happy with the book's portrayal of her.
@@capmidnite it was based on the life of a real geisha who sued the author for breach of contract and for failing to protect her identity when he acknowledge her in his book. She went on eventually to write her own memoir.

He interviewed her, and used her story as elements in his, she asked him to keep her contribution private and he put her in the credits of his book. But the book is not supposed to be her story at all, it's not even in the same period. She wrote her own autobiography, and there is an adaptation of it in manga too (not sure if it's translated in English). I rather liked the book, it's certainly not the most authentic but not the worst either by a far cry. I saw a few extracts from the movie, and I'm not tempted to see more.
I just finished watching the movie , such a sad ending. I loved the textiles, the patterns and colours. I was in love with them. I loved how they expressed the Japanese culture with such beautiful references of nature and human kindness. I give it a 5 out of 5 because its my first time watching a Japanese film. The scenes were not that extremely bad because they were quick but the last love scene was a little too much but it did break my heart to see what the yujyo went through, it was a sad tale. Maybe it was my eyes but the main character did not look that young she was prefect that role.

In an interview, the film maker STEVEN SPIELBERG ("Saving Private Ryan" and one of the Producers of "Memoirs of a Geisha", et.al) said that when making a Historical/Period film, if historical accuracy conflicts with the drama- Drama ALWAYS wins. It is what it is...a movie.....

So my assumption that the depiction of yukaku on "Samurai Champloo" was rather accurate wasn't wrong! Another reason why it's one of my favourite anime of all time then! ;)
I would love to watch this film but at the same time I think I'd cry all the way through it because of the suffering these poor woman physically and mentally went through 😢😭 even just thinking about it makes my heart hurt
oh my. although this is not my prefer type of movie, yes i'm a cry baby so life is already difficult, why suffer more BUT i love the historical plot, especially how things worked in the past. I've seen the movie "the royal tailor" and I CANT TELL how much i cried. i think i'll watch this one movie too, thanks for the suggestion Shogo! Months ago i was watching "princess atsuhime" a big historical series, because i'm in love with their kimonos and aesthecthics overall, but i sttoped, need to rewatch again, it is amazing. I generally love the movies from Japanese directors, but I don't know how much accurate they want/can be. One of my favorite director is Takeshi Kitano, I really enjoy his stile. One movie that I expecially liked from Yojiro Takita is Departures (the English translation of Okuribito)
Domo arigato gozaimashita, Shogo San. Thank you for this very informative review. As a westerner, I can't help but see a few similarities to Memoirs of a Geisha. I wonder if 'Memoirs' drew a lot of inspiration from this very real and tragic story.
My very first exposure to this part of history was when I watched a translated playthrough of Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan. I was expecting something dark considering series-favorite Kiryu was playing the role of Miyamoto Musashi in the Sengoku period, what I wasn't expecting was the yujyo part of the story and how prominent of a role it was given over the narrative. It's been a while but I've decided to look into it more starting with this video and it's a lot to take in but at least it's mostly making sense. So, thanks for the video.

Did each tea house have a Orian as the top earner and a trainee or 2 like orphans who help with cleanup or washing ? I was very interested in dolls when I lived in Japan as a young girl. I went to a doll museum & actually took some classes for 2 years learning to make them by hand. My teacher was a wonderful lady, she didn’t speak English & I only knew a few words but she thought me to sew & later to paint. She had a very large Orian doll , I wanted to make one and kept asking but she kept saying no. So finally she said #1 I was too young. 12.5 years #2 the fabric was far too expensive , if I made a mistake . The last doll I made under my teachers masterful eyes was my Kabuki doll he is huge & has been the center piece of my home for entire adult life. My husband said it took him a few years to get use to the Kabuki’s scary face paint.
Just listening to the story and the tragic scenes described in it is making me feel sick. I honestly don't think I could watch something so tragic like that.
I cannot, for the life of me, find a version of English subtitles aren't absolute garble and call them "geisha". This movie is my favorite and I share it with all my friends who have historical interests like myself and I would LOVE to find subs that don't need to be decoded.
The Japanese master piece "Street of Shame" comes to mind. I recommend this movie, if you haven't seen it. Some of the topics told here is portraited in the movie. No nude scenes, though.

I swear every time i hear “Yoshiwara” the only image that gets in my head is always Koinatsu from demon slayer. Bonus, Orian reminds me of Koinatsu too.

Exactly I am really curious if the pleasure District from memories of a Geisha is talking about Oiran I’d be really interested in hearing about that since the movie only touches upon the Geisha and not about the main characters older sister who was put in the area
it would've just been in an ordinary pleasure district. oiran would've only been in a special district like shimabara, or yoshiwara in tokyo, which was the most popular.
When you pointed out that the Yujyo only got two days off a year and had to work 15 hour days the socialist in me started chanting "Strike, strike, strike!" Sex workers should not be exposed to those inhumane conditions.
I liked this film. It manages to be beautiful and tragic without romanticising her struggle... I would agree the actress seems a little too young and innocent considering the life she has been forced to endure..

Do you know any other thing that would also show this kind of story, I mean showing the scary side of yuukaku, about oiran but maybe also about geisha but without scary scenes or at least really short? I think I wouldn't be able to watch this one because of scary scenes but the story of the sadness and pride of yujyo seems to be interesting. I'm sorry for causing troubles.

except... geisha are not oiran or yuujo. and memoirs of a geisha is very westernized...as it is, the original author of the book was a white man who betrayed the geisha he interviewed by naming her when she asked him not to, and he definitely tweaked parts of her story to fit his own narrative.

Since then I am curious that the difference between Oiran & Geisha!!! For me , different in obi & Oiran is too brighter than Geisha by appearance. Based on your very informative presentation I am very satisfied to know about them.
geisha were dancers and singers and they played instruments. they came around after oiran and yuujo. they weren't allowed to take customers, mostly because they were afraid that the geisha would take them away from oiran and yuujo. they did work alongside yuujo, though, and would be present as entertainment while a customer met with an oiran. their outfits and customs and hairstyles are also quite different. oiran wear their obi tied in front, while maiko and geisha do not. oiran also wear kimono that are more flashy and expensive with wild colors. oiran, when doing their walk to meet a client, would wear koma geta, which are shoes that geisha and maiko would not wear. oiran also go barefoot, while maiko and geisha always wear tabi.
I just watched and it was beautiful! To bad the English translation were sooo bad. But still I managed to “understand “ it. Didn’t get very well the ritual al the high heels clogs though. Can you explain it for me please? Tyvm!
Many episodes of Zatoichi, both film and TV, deal with these issues. Often the old game is shown as extremely wretched. A recent film, in English titled, Sword of Serenity, has an interesting take on this subject.
geisha and maiko are entertainers. they dance, sing, and play instruments. yuujo were prostitutes, the oiran being one of the highest rank. geisha and maiko are not prostitutes. oiran were ranked higher than geisha.
Yup her Oiran Dochu near the end of story is also bad and inaccurate ( no assistance when performing ) . I can understand real Oiran trained this walk like 3 years to be perfect and it will be ridiculous for this actress to completely master this walk . Still it’s immersion breaking to see that the highest ranking Oiran in this movie ( she may even be Tayuu ) performing Oiran Dochu like that . But overall it’s good movie . 3.5/5 for me .
I have a question, what's the difference between Yukaku and Harimise? Is Harimise a part of the Yukaku? Also, if Yujyo can't freely go out, what about an Oiran?
I'm not knowledgeble enough but outside of the two days off shogo mentioned, there are oiran walks where they can go out but it's not actually for themselves so not sure if that counts
the yukaku itself is the pleasure district. a harimise is an area in each brothel, separated from the street by a lattice, where the yuujo would be on display.

in the manga they do show women (so to speak) being sold off to pay debts and i think how they lower ranks were treated, but im not sure ab the anime

Adachi Yumi is now 40 years old and she made this movie when she was 34-35 years old. She still can pass as a 20-something to this day.

I just finished watching the movie , such a sad ending. I loved the textiles, the patterns and colours. I was in love with them. I loved how they expressed the Japanese culture with such beautiful references of nature and human kindness. I give it a 5 out of 5 because its my first time watching a Japanese film. The scenes were not that extremely bad because they were quick but the last love scene was a little too much but it did break my heart to see what the yujyo went through, it was a sad tale. Maybe it was my eyes but the main character did not look that young she was prefect that role.

In an interview, the film maker STEVEN SPIELBERG ("Saving Private Ryan" and one of the Producers of "Memoirs of a Geisha", et.al) said that when making a Historical/Period film, if historical accuracy conflicts with the drama- Drama ALWAYS wins. It is what it is...a movie.....
I'm a huge fan of the anime Samurai Champloo. The yujyo depictions in this anime is very detailed and saddening.

So my assumption that the depiction of yukaku on "Samurai Champloo" was rather accurate wasn't wrong! Another reason why it's one of my favourite anime of all time then! ;)

I would love to watch this film but at the same time I think I'd cry all the way through it because of the suffering these poor woman physically and mentally went through 😢😭 even just thinking about it makes my heart hurt
oh my. although this is not my prefer type of movie, yes i'm a cry baby so life is already difficult, why suffer more BUT i love the historical plot, especially how things worked in the past. I've seen the movie "the royal tailor" and I CANT TELL how much i cried. i think i'll watch this one movie too, thanks for the suggestion Shogo! Months ago i was watching "princess atsuhime" a big historical series, because i'm in love with their kimonos and aesthecthics overall, but i sttoped, need to rewatch again, it is amazing. I'm sure i'll cry a lot in Asagiri's story, but it'll worth it 😢

My very first exposure to this part of history was when I watched a translated playthrough of Ryu Ga Gotoku: Kenzan. I was expecting something dark considering series-favorite Kiryu was playing the role of Miyamoto Musashi in the Sengoku period, what I wasn't expecting was the yujyo part of the story and how prominent of a role it was given over the narrative. It's been a while but I've decided to look into it more starting with this video and it's a lot to take in but at least it's mostly making sense. So, thanks for the video.

Did each tea house have a Orian as the top earner and a trainee or 2 like orphans who help with cleanup or washing ? I was very interested in dolls when I lived in Japan as a young girl. I went to a doll museum & actually took some classes for 2 years learning to make them by hand. My teacher was a wonderful lady, she didn’t speak English & I only knew a few words but she thought me to sew & later to paint. She had a very large Orian doll , I wanted to make one and kept asking but she kept saying no. So finally she said #1 I was too young. 12.5 years #2 the fabric was far too expensive , if I made a mistake . The last doll I made under my teachers masterful eyes was my Kabuki doll he is huge & has been the center piece of my home for entire adult life. My husband said it took him a few years to get use to the Kabuki’s scary face paint.

I cannot, for the life of me, find a version of English subtitles aren't absolute garble and call them "geisha". This movie is my favorite and I share it with all my friends who have historical interests like myself and I would LOVE to find subs that don't need to be decoded.

it would've just been in an ordinary pleasure district. oiran would've only been in a special district like shimabara, or yoshiwara in tokyo, which was the most popular.

I liked this film. It manages to be beautiful and tragic without romanticising her struggle... I would agree the actress seems a little too young and innocent considering the life she has been forced to endure..

I was curious about one thing though.. what was up with the face/body makeup in this movie?? The ladies underchins and necks and declotages were powdered white, but their faces left unpowdered? It looked a little "left off" to me but I guese theres a explanation or historical reason for it? Please let me know if you have any input. Thanks!!

Do you know any other thing that would also show this kind of story, I mean showing the scary side of yuukaku, about oiran but maybe also about geisha but without scary scenes or at least really short? I think I wouldn't be able to watch this one because of scary scenes but the story of the sadness and pride of yujyo seems to be interesting. I'm sorry for causing troubles.

As a sidenote, I think Samurai Shamploo had a nice example of the "darkness" surrounding a Yukaku.
Eh. The movie was based on a book written by a white American male and the writing reeks of "exotic Japonisme." I believe it was based on the experiences of an actual famous geisha and she wasn't happy with the book's portrayal of her.

Short answer: Not much.
except... geisha are not oiran or yuujo. and memoirs of a geisha is very westernized...as it is, the original author of the book was a white man who betrayed the geisha he interviewed by naming her when she asked him not to, and he definitely tweaked parts of her story to fit his own narrative.

Thank you so much for this. Though I knew about Maiko & Geisha. I just saw Oiran costume 6 years ago at Kyoto while I tried to wear as Geisha. Since then I am curious that the difference between Oiran & Geisha!!! For me , different in obi & Oiran is too brighter than Geisha by appearance. Based on your very informative presentation I am very satisfied to know about them.
geisha were dancers and singers and they played instruments. they came around after oiran and yuujo. they weren't allowed to take customers, mostly because they were afraid that the geisha would take them away from oiran and yuujo. they did work alongside yuujo, though, and would be present as entertainment while a customer met with an oiran. their outfits and customs and hairstyles are also quite different. oiran wear their obi tied in front, while maiko and geisha do not. oiran also wear kimono that are more flashy and expensive with wild colors. oiran, when doing their walk to meet a client, would wear koma geta, which are shoes that geisha and maiko would not wear. oiran also go barefoot, while maiko and geisha always wear tabi.

Many episodes of Zatoichi, both film and TV, deal with these issues. Often the old game is shown as extremely wretched. A recent film, in English titled, Sword of Serenity, has an interesting take on this subject.

geisha and maiko are entertainers. they dance, sing, and play instruments. yuujo were prostitutes, the oiran being one of the highest rank. geisha and maiko are not prostitutes. oiran were ranked higher than geisha.

I can understand real Oiran trained this walk like 3 years to be perfect and it will be ridiculous for this actress to completely master this walk . Still it’s immersion breaking to see that the highest ranking Oiran in this movie ( she may even be Tayuu ) performing Oiran Dochu like that . But overall it’s good movie . 3.5/5 for me .

I'm not knowledgeble enough but outside of the two days off shogo mentioned, there are oiran walks where they can go out but it's not actually for themselves so not sure if that counts
the yukaku itself is the pleasure district. a harimise is an area in each brothel, separated from the street by a lattice, where the yuujo would be on display.
