Johnny Cash. He's one of our favorite artists of all time. He played acoustic guitar in front of the Tennessee Two or the Tennessee Three, and he had a really cool style that was pretty bad ass. He would play the acoustic guitar with a flat pick. And he'd often have it down low like this. Sometimes he'd be strumming way up here and then he'd move back here and then he'd move back up here. So that's what you'd see him to live a lot and it's really cool showmanship and it gets the job done in terms of putting the song across.
The Sun Studio sessions that were so groundbreaking with the Tennessee Two had something a little different going on. He would take a card and weave it into the strings like this, okay like that, and then he would kind of use it as a percussion instrument because they didn't have a drummer. They had doghouse bass slapping away. Luther Perkins picking on the Telecaster.
There was an echo machine, an extra tape machine in the studio that was used for echo, and it was often producing its own sort of rhythmic back beat. So with Johnny hitting on his guitar like that, this kind of acted like the snares that would be hitting against the underside of a snare drum. Some people would call this style of guitar playing sock guitar. You can do the same thing without a card, or you can make some chords, but the focus is on the texture of the pick going across the strings but having that card in there gives it an extra sizzle.
So check it out, play along with your favorite Johnny Cash recordings and see if you don't get a little extra rhythm.

I used to play my dad's old 6 string exactly like this as background when him and his friends got together to jam some old folky stuff. i had no idea what i was doing but they said I was doing it right, and they were happy, my dad was happy, and that's all I cared about :)

Cash was a very average guitarist, played the cowboy chords. His signature sound was definitely due to Luther Perkins. Johnny’s forte was his songwriting. And contrary to current belief Johnny was never incarcerated in a penitentiary-he spent a few nights in small jail. Merle Haggard is the country singer with a bona fide address in the penitentiary

Interesting! I've played guitar for much of my life - and not very well - and think I know a lot about the likes of Cash and Duane Eddy, but I did not know about this little card trick. Thanks for the lesson!
It wasn't just about showmanship, the tone difference is very apparent when switching between the different positions on the neck.

Certainly a good player, but I never thought of Cash as any kind of guitar god or groundbreaker.
Johnny was a little bit of everything, Which is why he was so damn good.
He wasn't even close.
He knew a couple of chords and could sing at middle c on a good day.
Technique and perfection is nothing compared to feeling and expressing emotions. He will be remembered forever, no one even knows who you are.

Carlos Uribe He never played a Telecaster. His favourite model was the Fender Esquire, but he also played Jaguars and Jazzmasters, because Fender gave him free prototypes. The Jazzmaster he played in the late fifties was a prototype. He had several Esquires, Jazzmasters and Jaguars, but never a Telecaster. I have no idea whether he played a Jazzmaster on one of Cash's albums or not, but on Tennessee Flat-Top Box you hear him playing a Jaguar and most of the early ones and the Folsom concert feature him playing an Esquire. If you watch the Town Hall Party concert from late fifties(?), you can see him playing a Jazzmaster.
But yeah, he never played a Telecaster. At least there's no footage or pictures of him playing one of those.

Can also make a snare by crossing both bass strings over at 7th or 12th fret, then use plectrum.

according to what i was told when i went to sun records on a tour cash used a dollar bill in the strings ...it might have just been in studio recordings ,,,he might have used the "mute" live...same sound

Try the card by the bridge instead of the nut, then you can do what Mr. Cash did, but with chords too.
It was actually just a normal piece of paper that he used. He shows it a lot on some of the live versions of I walk the line. You can see him do it on this in a few vids.

I met Johnny cash in Tennessee before he died...yes actually he did alot like this. And alot of times he would use a dollar bill for the snare sound. So yes, he did do it like this. Questions the man HIMSELF answered for me.

He actually most of the time weaved a dollar bill in the strings towards the middle of the neck. from there he would gently place his fingers directly over the dollar bill to touch, but not to press down on the strings to give it a maraca sound. he did do that card snare trick some of the time, but if you want the classic Cash acoustic sound, the trick I just mentioned is the way to go.

John Frusciante does that like muting technique in "By the way". The same technique Johnny Cashe, uses, he mutes the guitar with the palm of his hand and adds some reverb and delay I guess
He actually used a dollar bill mostly. But he used multiple items through time for the same effect. He even once used a parking ticket.
