It's not because it looks pretty (mainly) but because it maintains a good edge over normal steel.

@@jackpd34 the thing is that, as pointed out in this vid. Its risky because a lot more can go wrong in the process, and you might not catch it or have time to fix it.

To be fair, Alex' sword is actually first thing I've seen on this show, that actually looked good. Good enough to be sold. Everything else I've seen I'd barely take for free.

Did barbarians really use these, or are they trying to say this is some sort of Viking longsword? Because it looks more like an oversized Roman Gladius. Either way, the winning sword was visually and functionally amazing.
Don't pay too much attention to this show for historical accuracy. The Spatha was used by the Romans themselves during the imperial era and replaced the shorter gladius swords by the 2nd century. The spatha had its origins in Germanic swords, Celtic swords, or longer Roman cavalry swords, or were hybrids of these designs. The Vikings may have based their swords on the spatha. Whereas the gladius was a short sword with a total length of ~2-2.5 feet long depending on the variant, the Spatha was something like ~2.5-3.4 feet long.

@@Intranetusa my friend it was the other way around. As the empire grew the longer Spatha replaced the shorter gladius. Reason being the empires rival became armoured and more organized. The goths and other migratory tribes did use this sword as well in the later days of the western empire.
@@jakedominie3654 That's what I said. I said the longer Spatha replaced the shorter gladius. Also, IIRC, the gladius interestingly got shorter a few times as the original models adopted from the Iberians was longer than late Republican era models.

Without that ridge it isn't a spatha anymore, it's a migration era sword, just put a brazilian nut pommell on it a d you have a viking sword.
Probably lucky they didn't double heat treated and still with a warp that sword was gonna bend or break no question. The real sad part is his opponent crushed it and would have beaten him regardless
They should've at least swung Kevin's sword once on the dummy even if he didn't qualify, that was really sad to see all that effort going to waste...

Alex is like the first guy to ever have a Damascus sword not just shatter instantly
To be fair they never made it to the strength test.
To also be fair, none of these are really Damascus in the proper sense, just pattern welded, which has a risk of de-laminating if it isn’t done properly, while proper Damascus is a type of crucible steel, though they both have that swirly pattern to them, since they are both made of multiple type

The blood and viscera just helps to bring out the pattern ...it just adds a certain "pop" to the weapon.

He probably has a shower in his dressing room's bathroom plus a change of clothes. Plus that fake blood is too watery to really stick and stain like real blood would, so I would think it'd be easy to tell it's not real even if he didn't wash up. Real blood is a LOT thicker and more opaque, this almost looks like cherry kool-aid once it's outside of the dummy.

I'm going to be very honest, when I saw Alex's damascus with the ridge and lines I actually left like I saw a masterpiece and it felt really good just looking at the weapon before the keel test. Sorry but I have to admit that was the greatest sword I've ever seen.

Yeah he’s an amazing blade smith. Carter cutlery sell his knives for 400+ usd and his mentor Carter is beyond good. This guy fully deserved a win. Plus he had the heart to give the winnings to his parents, this is a good man.

Honestly probably the most brutal and lethal looking kill test in the whole series, i wanna watch Doug do that with every weapon they make

I think that Will does a very nice thing here: he praises the work of the winning piece as the reason for becoming champ rather than focus on how he won due to the other guy getting disqualified. That way the winner gets acknowledged by his or her own right

I'd really love to see the contestants forging it in old fashioned way, anvil and hammer and just what the people at the time had available to make their weapons . would be much more interesting as ive seen some videos where one guy had plasma cutters and sheets of steel and the other had a anvil and his arm to compete.
