      Hey Rob, what school and Sifu? I studied under Grandmaster Patrick Chang Law and Master Judd Whitelaw.

    Lee was one of the first to recognise the composite nature of choy li fut. It is a predessor of jeet kun do in that it is a hybrid of southern and northern shaolin systems. An excllent exponent of the system will dynamically interchange both linear and circular attacks and defence. Both pwun and Sow are deadly defensive and offensive manouvres. A truly beaitiful system. I miss it greatly.You guys have done it justice here and have demonstrated some classical training methods. Good work.🤜🤚

      Lee was wing chun. He wrote bad things about CLF. The two style are opposite.

      @@willmurray222 please provide your evidence for this, I have never read Bruce denigrate a particular system with perhaps the exception of his comparison between Karate and Chinese Gung Fu.
      "Choy Li Fut is the most effective system that I've seen for fighting more than one person. [It] is one of the most difficult styles to attack and defend against. Choy Li Fut is the only style [of kung fu] that traveled to Thailand to fight the Thai boxers and hadn't lost." Bruce Lee *1

      Lee 's letters to someone he said some student should quit wing chun and go to CLF school because CLF uses the moves that wing chun throws out.. Just so you know I studyed CLF for 10 years( Wong Ha ).

      @@willmurray222 Well will seeing as we are throwing credentials out there. I studied under Grandmaster Patrick Chang Law from the British Choy Li Fut association from 8 to 18 and I find your view on CLF very surprising. I will start with points of agreement. Without Doubt Lee's foundational system was Wing Chun ( which was astute of Lee, as imho it is without equal as a defensive system). To say they are opposites is a simplification. As you know Choy Lu Fut was a hybrid system from Shaolin, combining both the Long range Northern systems and the Southern shorter systems. Uniquely it fuses both linear and circular attack and defence ( Sow, Pwun, ect) This would explain Lee's higher regard for it. Grandmaster Law was a contemporary of Lee in Hong Kong at the time of his ascendancy. It is well known in folklore surroundings Lee's Life, that an early encounter with a CLF practitioner left an indelible impression on Lee and his thinking. As you also know, the root philosophy of Jeet Kung do is the incorporation of the effective of each style into your own fighting system. It is precisely because Lee did not engage in pointless quarrels about " best system" but utilised the best of all systems, that makes your take surprising. I have found no evidence that Lee had a poor view of Choy Li Fut, quite the opposite. It is arguably the forerunner to JKD.

    Deff a style of KungFu from Both Northern and Southern China I heard about were a block can be used as a strike and a strike used as a block and it’s relies on relaxed power I wasn’t understanding the formes at first they were to me moved u learn by doing the moves over and over I had some Great instructors who worked with me on that this is how this is being used or what this can be used for but the Choy Lay Fut I go to I deff would recommend so looking forward going back

    What do you do to keep from pulling or damaging your shoulders? I get not being fully extended, but these big circular motions that end in impact seem to be very hard on the rotator cuffs.

    • @SifuChrisChilds
      @SifuChrisChilds  9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Damaging your shoulder is a possibility. To avoid it there are a lot of shoulder warm up exercises that should be done before training. Also just like a martial artist must do additional leg and hip stretches to be able to kick well, a choy lay fut practitioner needs to do quite a bit of upper body flexibility training. I also recommend additional weight training to strengthen the shoulders. Finally you have to listen to your body and build power gradually, if it hurts its wrong

    I'm practicing in a Hung Sing academy here in Brazil. But I think it's too low physical training. We just learn to repeat a few movements just like if it was a dance repetition. Everything is too controled and under commands that I cant have freedom to use the kicks and punches by myself. I concluded that Im being fooled because im not learning to be a warrior stronger but just a puppeteer. I'd like to kick and punch as you re doing and to really learn to defend myself
    Am I wrong to say this? In my opinion, the real kung fu is not like my academy shows to be

    All this condition is great and all, but is wasted training for competition since everyone wraps their hands and wears padded gloves. It's not like the old days where people bare knuckle brawl and this type of conditioning is crucial otherwise you just end up breaking your hands.

    • @arthurwatts1680
      @arthurwatts1680 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OK, but are these folks necessarily training for 'competition' ? Surely the ability to blast straight through someone's guard and backfist them in the face has to count for something on the street ? It's all academic, and comes down to the man not the art, but CLF wouldnt have survived this long without building a reputation for effectiveness where it matters. We can kick the can re BJJ / MT / whatever till we run out of keystrokes, but ultimately its just you and someone who wants to seriously hurt you - no referee, medical staff or timekeeper. I dont have a dog in this fight - I've never set foot in a CLF kwoon - but if these guys are serious, conditioning their hands and forearms makes a lot of sense to me. Next time you're in a club, check out the watches / bracelets and rings worn by some of the other male patrons - I dont know why the bouncers let some of them in, but that's what many of these techniques are going to have to smash through on their way to their intended targets, and that means conditioning.

      This is me in a nutshell. I train in Choy Li Fut because I love it, but training for compettion is something I am definitely not interested in. I've visited boxing gyms too, and I know for a fact a lot of them train for health, not getting in the ring in front of an audience.
