Oh my gosh YES! I’ve had those sticky spots on some of my philodendrons and I could not for the life of me solve why they were occurring! I’ve checked for pests a million times, treated with pesticides, googled possible sources, NOTHING! Now I know that they’re just nectaries! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! 🤣🤣🌱🌱

when i notice some sticky honey like substance on the leaves, there is often scale insect nearby.
happened to my ficus elastica and i had a huge infestation of my umbrella tree.
they prefer the new leaves or even apex cover, so locations easy to spot.

No bugs but crystal mini sticky droplets on stems of my algonema and no red spots where it’s pertruding from so I’ll just double check and give a nice shower and light neem leaf and stem washing to be on the safe side. My algaonema was oddly flowering but that’s it. Gives me some sense of relief with your video thank you one year later 🤗

This is literally the only video or information I can find about the sticky white blob that I just wiped off my monasterily if that hasn't even unfurled at all yet. I really hope though that it doesn't affect it unfurling because I have a lot of leaves coming finally and it took so long to get to this point but I don't want it to stick there

  • @barbll000
    @barbll000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This is great info. That sticky question comes up on FB groups all the time and most people immediately think it's insects. Some of my philodendrons would have a sticky droplet hanging on the end of the leaf which would often rub off onto me when I walked by the plant.
The whole thing about ants actually farming and tending to aphids in order to get their sweet poop is just so fascinating :)

  • @ButterflyLoverGirl

Omg. I just noticed little sticky spots on my Burle Marx the other day and freaked out, because it has TONS of new growth about to open. I thought it was some type of pest, but I am pretty good at wiping down the leaves top and bottom weekly. I don't really always wipe the stems because it's always putting out new leaves, so this made me very nervous. I'm SO GLAD to know that this is a naturally occurring plant substance that it puts out like a flower would. Also makes sense why I've been seeing ants in my room. It just has these little clear sticky beads up and down the stems and nowhere else. So fascinating!

At first, I thought was water from watering the plant, but when i saw closely, there's a bunch of ants sucking into the clear substance looks like a water drops and getting nervous about my plant, but this content pops out and tell that sticky stuff is natural for plants... Thank you Summer for sharing this tips.

I think my bamboo plant on my balcony was sucked to death by aphids. There was white sticky stuff all over it which I guess was the 'honey dew'. Then came the flies and a wasp that harvested it for its paper nest. I really let down my bamboo. I'll do a better job next time. Thank you for another insightful video. Great video! Wish I had known the difference earlier as I think I treated my Prince of Orange Philodendron with Neem Oil to try to get rid of what I concluded was honey dew (from some unseen pest). Ended up killing the plant....Then bought 10” pot Burle Marx Philodendron and noticed the same sticky droplets. Figured out they were just part of plant life (so nectaries (sp?)) Now feel badly about my Prince of Orange, as it was probably nectaries and I was trying to get rid of something that was harmless to the plant. Thank you for this video, so helpful to viewers!!! 👏🏻

A few years ago my huge Ficus Benjamina tree just kept oozing sap from the leaves while it was inside over the winter months. I didn’t see where the sap was coming from but pretty much all the leaves were sticky(sap was NOT visible). It made a huge mess on my floors. I didn’t see any bugs or any pests. It only happened that one year and I’ve had the plant for 20 years. I just assumed the plant was particularly unhappy being inside for so long. I took the plant out in late Spring and the sap went away. No idea.

I usually find the evening of watering day that most of my aroids will gutate, and while the water that comes out isn`t sugary, if i don`t wipe it off, it will dry with a slight crystaline sheen to it. Hoya of course are pretty drippy, and I only realized this year that my lipstick plant actually produces a pretty prodigious amount of nectar which makes sense, the flowers look like they are just dying for a hummingbird to come along. No hummers in my apartment though, I only noticed when I bumped into a vine while closing a curtain, effectively drizzling syrup all over a whole bunch of plants below.

Guttation can also cause a similar form of drop on a leaf. Though these are rarely sticky. My Banana plant dips water like a leaky faucet from every leaf for a few days after watering. It can range from straight water to slightly sticky. It also has deep petioles that can pool a lot of this water. Those pools tend to kill more fungus gnats then my vinegar traps. Most of my aroids do the same.

Yes, I did on my orchids leaves. Is that normal? Or is that insect poop? I saw a scale on one of them.... not 100% sure.

Still wondering about the sticky droplets on the underside of my Xanadu leaves. I also have little green bugs smaller than droplets and brown bugs slightly larger than the droplets. Multiple times
    I've tried spraying with coffee,
I've tried spraying with neem oil,
I've tried spraying with 1 part hydrogen peroxide 3 parts water.
6 months later still can't get rid of them. But plants still thriving.

Happy new year Summer. I had to finish work so I finish watching. I have often notice some sticky deposits on some of my hoyas new stems. Like a native Mcgilivroy. Which the ants love. Thank you I learned something new about nectar ies. I have always thought the insect vectors were the root cause.
    Cheers

Do you know if phalaenopsis have nectaries on the underside edge of their leaves?

I love all your videos. So informative and fun. I don’t even have plants that have sticky stuff but curious anyway. So I guess I learned something. Hehe. Happy New Year!!! 🌱🌿🌵

here cause my mango is sticky. it's still in a little jar of water, has 6 beautiful leaves, and all have tiny dots of sticky on both sides of leaves. so, as you said "extrafloral nectaries" I was like I have to look this up, and I stopped the video. but thanks to my untreated and recently diagnosed ADHD (we don't have drugs for it here, so I only got useless drugs for GAD - anxiety) anywho, by the time I opened a new tab to look it up, I forgot what I was supposed to look for and figured "I need to rewind the video" and then I saw you wrote it on screen

Greetings from Singapore, Summer! So glad I watched this episode. Now I know it’s the nectaries on my Florida Ghost that makes its petioles sticky! Subscribed a couple of months ago & am busy devouring all your entertaining & informative videos😻

So glad I found this! I have a yard in the city (NYC) and at the back there is an area with ivy and some ferns i planted (okay, one fern that lived and doesn't do anything!) and some tree leaves on the ground and I noticed a bunch of bees hanging out there. I read up on ground bees and figured it must be that, but there's a bunch of them crawling around there and I figured there has to be another reason they are there. I noticed a lot of the leaves on the ivy are shiny- they look like they are wet. My googling led me here. I guess the bees are feasting on what I now assume is honeydew?! That ivy has been growing around and up the tree right there for as long as I've lived there, which is 20 years, and I've never seen anything on it before. I have an actual garden further away so I'm a little concerned about what is causing this and if it could spread to my "proper" garden (which isn't all that, but I try!) I already am constantly battling blackspot on two rosebushes I have so I worry....any pearls of wisdom? Thank you! I just subscribed, I really liked the video!

Hello, thanks very much for this video explaining some sticky substances on plants. I have a slightly different issue. I have only started getting this problem, in the past two years. I have had a large cheese plant, basil, mint, ginger, and cactus, for instance, and i have never had this issue. But, now i have added some other plants like peppers and i noticed the problem starting after this. The original plants, noted above, are not afflicted by what i am going to describe, in a moment. But all my pepper leaves are laden with a sticky liquid covered by white substance. The white substance is dust-like. I bought a Neem Oil Spray, which doesn't work. Are you familiar with this?

I’ve noticed sticky spots on the leaf backs my Philodendron Micans. I have not seen any pests even after scrutinizing the entire plant with a magnifying glass 🔎 I’ve done some research and it seems other people have noticed the same thing, but no one seems to know what it is 🤷🏼‍♀️ She has continued to thrive and has not lost any leaves 🍃 I am completely stumped 🤔

    Happy new year Summer Rayne😄😄
Ants sometimes damage plants especially if the plant is healthy and receiving so much of fertilizer or adequate light and care. Ants deliver bacteria or molds too and damage structures if not taken action. Thanks for the info. New subsriber here😂

I don’t know if my philodendron has nectarines or a pest on its stems. The little black oblong spots are raised and come off under my fingernail. Some leaves are drooping, so something is affecting them. We’re pretty careful with watering and we did have ants a couple months ago. And we have one large leaf that is very sticky, almost oozing, and curling in. Should I continue removing the black spots? Other actions to take? Thanks!!
