RedGum's original has been one of my all time favourite songs ever since I read the lyrics in one of my high school poetry books. The Herd's version has a very different feel, but I love it too. Their rap adds a sense of attitude, rhythm and lyricism that achieves, to me, the same things that are important in RedGum's version: no-one knew what they were getting themselves into and that war made their life hell well after they came home.

I loved this. As an Aussie digger myself I believe that a tribute like this should be complemented. The younger generation needs to understand what was given by men for others. And people need to stop ragging on the ADF cause we offer something to this country that most people couldn't even think off. Thanks to all the men we've lost recently and a deep sorrow for their families!

    • @theuglywolf2536
      @theuglywolf2536 ปีที่แล้ว

Question for you then: I'm tangentially involved with the ADF from a government level. Won't go into detail what with the whole APS code of conduct and all, but as a digger, what do you think is causing the decreased retention and low recruitment numbers for the ADF? What changes would you make to bolster numbers?

Ah, the risks you run by re-making such a sacred iconic song... I'm old enough (just!) to remember the release of the original, and it will ever hold a special place in my collection. That these boys would want to pay homage to it in their way, f'kn good on 'em for having the balls. It shows that this song means something to them. As it should to all of us, really.

I think a lot of people commenting here are either to young or to old to understand how well the cover hit home for its time. 2007 and the years leading up to it were kind of a golden era in australian hip hop. Having a real message behind it really helped a lot of us get our minds around the war we were seeing every day on tv. Remember this was only like 5 years after 9/11 and for a lot of us that was a big deal. I personally enjoy both versions and if you enjoy this i recommend listening to the meters gained also by the herd.

I think as someone that is young (19) and has respect for older music as I grew up listening to it and still do, this cover is a way of the youth of our fine nation paying our respects to those that had fought for it to be so great. I love the Herd and their music, have seen them live many times, they're cover and portayal of this song is a blessing as it reminds us young folk that there are men and women that fought and are still fighting to have the freedom we have.
I really hope that everyone can see past the differences in the COVER and the original song and just appreciate its purpose.

I still remember hearing this song on triple J like a version over 17yrs ago around the same time my youngest daughter was born, I was driving trucks at the time and i had to pull over to the side off the road to wipe the tears from my eyes. It hit me as hard as redgums original song did and reminded me of why i listened to my ww2 vet grandfather n he told me not to join the armed forces, my grandfather passed away not long ago at 102yrs old and the promise i made him as a kid was not to fight in another mans war unless your country is being invaded.

Originally covered by The Herd for a JJJ 'like a version' music segment, response from their (18-25 youth demographic) audience was unprecedented. There were a huge number of requests for it after it aired.
The re-recording of the song for a record, and this film clip, all happened because of that response.
I heard that Like A Version when it aired on the J's, and I had to stop the car and listen. It was powerful - the original has always been a major song for me, just like everyone else.

just listening to John Schumann doing an interview on the radio. He was the lead singer of Redgum and wrote this song. For those of you who think this cover has ruined the song, he loves it, he says there have been a lot of covers of this song and this one is brilliant. He also loves the fact real vetrans were used in the filmclip. Yes its very different, but if the writer can enjoy it, that is saying a lot. Its not crap, its different and difference is a good thing people!

There was an engaging focus on how the Australian vs US approach to the Vietnam War, as well as how war affects the soldiers who fought in them. This video clip played as part of it to sum it all up. My Grand Father, served under the AATTV(Australian Army Training Team Vietnam). He told me a story in reflection of a scene in the movie Saving Private Ryan. He spoke of the moment that Tom Hanks dragged a soul up the beach only to realise that he had dragged half a person. My Grand Father expressed that at first it is shocking to look back and realise that you were dragging half of your friend to safety but after awhile you became used to it. No human soul should become comfortable with that.

Do you protest other wars? What makes this one different to you then others? Are you down protesting Afghanistan or any of the current ones?
War is war, it's terrible, but if you're the good side as we are, then we are there fighting to save the good people there. The good Vietnamese people begged for help to save their freedom, to save their lives. Unfortunately their war was lost and now those who survived are lost in a communism they never wanted, one that was forced on them. Don't ever think it was a wasted war. That it shouldn't have happened. You ask any southern Vietnamese who wanted freedom away from communism and they're grateful for every effort to stop its advancements, even if it ultimately failed.
We are supposed to be helping the less fortunate, that's what we do as a nation, helping those in need. And we helped in Vietnam.

Although the sentiments of those, that were made to go to war, are real, there're many of us who willingly stepped into our roles. We fought because it was the right thing to do, to us. I suffer the same heartaches that these guys do.....but I accept those things, as I did it off my own bat. No one has any time for us...the ones who did this, as we wanted to.

My dad was a Major in the 6th battalion D Company. He fought the battle of Long Tan but died at the age of 60 from cancer related to agent orange. This song makes me cry but feel proud at the same time. Dad would wake up under the bed screaming saying he was covered in blood and I would hug him say it ok dad. It was sad to see the effects of war on a man.

"I was only 19" came out in 1983 and it was not an anti Vietnam song. It came about from the memories of a Vietnam vet, and is a tribute to all who served in Vietnam

this version is excellent, its a remake and it doesn't matter who wrote it as long as they respect its message and its context, which it appears they do.
