We were never taught this in school in Ireland 🇮🇪 surprise, surprise. Thanks for the video. There was a co. Clare man from liscanner who did a lot to development on the submarine, and also wrote papers on flight before flying was a thing. John Phillip Holland 1843 to 1914
As a child from Irish RC family, Rome has been responsible for some terrible atrociites, but yes Britain was a tyrant to Ireland As far as protistant nations go - USA, UK, Germany, Canada .... they have produced more innovations, an Industrial Revolution [UK], more wealth, medications, longer life.... than RC countries...eg, Italy, Spain, South American nations which tend to be more corrupt
There are several more Irish inventions not included e.g. The induction coil invented by Fr. Nicholas Callan at Maynooth. The hypodermic needle invented by Francis Rynd at the Meath Hospital in Dublin. The portable defibrillator by Frank Pantridge at the RVH Belfast. The Coffey still by Aenis Coffey and many many more.
I agree with you. The map at the end is an insult, Ireland is an island, not some dismembered oddity. And I'm from Co Clare. Furthermore, there is orange in the Irish flag, but I can't remember seeing any orange in the clothes of Irish athletes at Paris 2024
Interesting, but you need to do some meditating on the map. It is bizarre. Ireland is an island, not some oddity. Seems like a lot of the viewers are doing homework for you.
There are great ones missing here, such as Thomas and Howard Grubb who between them created many of the telescopes found in observatories around the world. Thomas Grubb helped the Earl of Rosse, William Parsons, build the world's largest telescope of the 19th Century at Birr. His son Howard invented the collimating rifle site and a periscope. Sir Charles Parsons, son of William, invented the steam turbine which revolutionised transport and energy generation. John Philip Holland from Clare created the world's first practical submarine and his designs were adopted by the US and Royal Navies. Then there is John Joly who created an early form of colour photography and also the use of radium to cure cancer. I will also mention George Johnstone Stoney who identified and named the 'electron'. Finally, there is William Rowan Hamilton whose Quaternion Equation is the basis for a lot of the science for defining spaces and is even used in creating video displays today. There are many more, but the shame is that most of these people are not known in their native land. Painters, poets and writers are much better known in Ireland, which may tell us something about the Irish character. In many cases the people I have mentioned are much better known outside of Ireland. As far as I can see Government authorities and institutions do very little to reverse the ignorance about our great inventors and scientists.
Why the use of an Irish tricolour?. 2 of the inventions were pre partition. Harry Ferguson was based in Northern Ireland. 1 was research carried out in a UK university.. So inventions by people from "the Island of Ireland" is more appropriate. You could have included the titanic......
Why include a failure. Brits didn't want any Irish people working in the shipyard. Those brave souls who applied for and received work were abused by Brits. Hammers would ' accidentally ' fall from great heights inflicting horrific injuries. Brits built a turkey!!!
Let's make a bit of correction. Word missile in modern usage means air flying self propelled weapon. Brennan invented nothing like that, he made pretty decent (for his time) steerable torpedo. One can call it missile only in historical meaning of this word, and such usage is misleading nowadays.
@@marcusuadonnghaile1855 Harry Ferguson was from County Down. He invented the hydraulic compressed oil lifting and lowering system, which is the basis of how all earth moving machinery works. His invention has had a massive impact on the world.
Kiely, a farmer from Ballyneill won a rake of gold medals at the Olympics, in the early 1900s, before 1916. Is his rustic upbringing British or the winning of the medals, do you think? Would he be "British" if he only won a silver medal?

The country wasn't divided when he lived. There was no such place as Northern Ireland. I was just called Ireland.
