Alex this is the best advice that I've came across in my 40 years. When I was younger and I was tired of working by the hour for sh*t jobs that I had no interest in, I got out and told someone who I greatly respected at the time that I was going to do what I enjoy. He told me I was a f child and had to grow up. That hit me hard and I went back to "safe" jobs eventually got myself stuck and miserable with not much in the bank. I knew back then that I wasn't successful at what I do because I didn't give a damn about what i was doing. It was completely my fault for not thinking for myself. I'm starting over and don't give a f what people say anymore, its my life and i can't carry on doing what I hate. I wish I had someone like you in my life, but most of all I should of used my head. Great video mate.

It's obviously not sustainable. There's no avoiding the constant pull of the enjoyable and salacious. You can't throw everything you enjoy into a pool. The sad fact is success is only for those who can manage their mental state over time, and do the difficult choice of doing what's right over what's fun. There's no real shortcuts. No tricks.

    • @fatboyRAY24
      @fatboyRAY24 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@artistryartistry7239 You misunderstand. What Beck mentions is actually the only way to sustain specific behavior overtime without the aid of outside intervention (e. bootcamp, soccer mom, etc.). And it's perfectly fine to throw out the ps4/quit social media/drinking for a week, nobody says it has to be forever, though there are entire religions, philosophies, and other schools of thought that say otherwise---theravada buddhism, stoicism, christian monasteries, Deep Work, etc. And choosing between the "right" choice or the "fun" choice is a false dichotomy. There can be plenty of overlap between the two, especially if you view fun as degrees on a spectrum.

    • @artistryartistry7239
      @artistryartistry7239 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@fatboyRAY24 I don't misunderstand, I just don't agree. There's a difference. Judging by what you've written, you're the one who doesn't understand. Lol, and no it's not the "only way to sustain specific behavior over time." Are you claiming that no human being has ever had different thoughts, realizations, or actions outside of Becker's specific prescriptions here has ever sustained a given behavior? Could you really be claiming something so ridiculous? And were you even listening? He threw his PC into a pool of water -- destroying it. That's not a temporary solution. However if one keeps those temptations around, feeding the "animal side" of the psyche, as Becker calls, one is linking themselves to those things forever, so they're constant temptations and they promote behaviors and associations and temptations Becker defines as harmful and best avoided. This video is not advocating "overlap," but replacement. You clearly didn't pay attention to the video so I'm not sure why you're even arguing.

@@artistryartistry7239 He's basically talking about enjoying the work and putting everything else fun in your life on hold. And if you don't enjoy the work...learn to enjoy it or it will be very difficult to focus on your tasks and you will get distracted by other fun things. But I don't necessarily agree with this as "the only way". I believe there are probably some people that really don't enjoy the work at all, but they just have really really strong self discipline. And their meter never runs out cause they won't let it. But I think for most people what Becker is saying is spot on. That's what I've had to do.

Truly focus on the enjoyment of the things that lead up to hooking up. (your example missed the mark a tad bit)

I see alot of people are asking for precise instructions, therefor i thought i would show an example of something simular that i did to motivate myself
I started running when i was young, because my parents forced me to. therefor i was never motivated to train more than i had to. then one time i figured i wanted to become a really good runner. this translates over to the video, where he talks about social value. Now, training in it self didnt give me that dopamine feeling. so what did i do? i bought myself some really nice running shoes, i bought myself some really nice training clothes, and lastly i bought myself a GPS watch. after that, all i wanted to do is put on my really nice clothes and start running. the training part wasnt what stimulated my brain. It was looking fresh, which again ties down to the primal instincts. the GPS watch logged all my sessions, it gave me data and really showed me my progress, this is crazy motivation! all i wanted was to get as many kilometers on my watch as i could. there was communities tied to this data, where you could compare yourself to other runners.
I know running isnt the same as creating a business, but the concept is the same. you need to find things that trick you into doing it. I am sure there are lots of communities for entreprenours where you can connect with other people and compare yourself to them. In the video, workspace was mentioned, which i think sounds like a good idea. make it a place you rather be than on your couch. dress up, put on some nice clothes that you feel really good about, but only wear them when you are working. it sounds silly but it might work for you aswell. look at your progress, compare it to previous results.
I think focusing a lot on goals is what ruins peoples motivation the most. if you have a goal that is too easy, you will have no motivation to proceed after reaching that goal. if your goal is too far from reality, you wont have the motivation to start. I think have a goal that is not distinct is what really works. not telling yourself you want to achieve this or this, but saying "i want as much as i can of this" or "i want to be as good as possible at this"
    .
Find something you feel good about, and only allow yourself that when it is tied to progress on your goals.

    1. *Burning bridges* (survival) and *proving yourslef* to community. (higher social value)
    2. Giving little treats (*starting with easy*) but not tricking it as the big treat.
    - Keep the dopamine trail going
    - Measure progress and see how much u get better everyday. Not the huge boost.
    3. *Don’t declare victory* over small things (ie 100 or 1000 dollars a day , first client etc)
    - Separate Yourrslef from large gratification
    4. Everything u do in business, make it give a little dopamine release. (ie *clean work place*, organized computer, Todo lists)

If you're an athlete, entrepreneur, twitch thot, entertainer, programmer, game developer, actor... Every field has different little steps along the way to the bigger goals that you can define as pleasurable if only you remove more intense sources of dopamine from your life first.
      I'm a game developer.
For me every little feature that I finish implementing into the game engine and every little scene or storyline subplot that I finish writing is that kind of little crumb along the way. Can't psyche myself out over any of these little steps, but have to acknowledge how awesome it is that this feature works and all the bugs have been squashed. Dopamine release.

@@ronnickyjroy3 the key part is to understand most of the things you do that feel good even a tiny bit, are dopamine spikes (some other hormones too but basically dopamine).
Except if you're overstimulated, then you barely even feel that shit.
Meditating every day for 15 minutes and quitting some of the most stimulating habits (addictions) that aren't necessary for survival will yield great results very quickly, because it will make you appreciate those little dopamine spikes more.
Now, practical advice would be to indeed, take a moment to pat yourself on the back, take a victory lap basically, but never overdo it. I find it a bad idea to chain your minor victories to something like a candy or other external rewards.
It's best to just take 1min to appreciate what you just did, self admiration and positive affirmation, then move on.

This video is so true! Great video! I remember back in my 20's me and a friend were gonna start a business. We got our plan together and got so excited we starting telling people what we were gonna do. Well...we felt so great and excited talking shit, and it felt so good like"we were on our way", that when it came down to actually starting the business, we never did anything because talking shit to everyone gave us the sense that we were already successful, although we never even started the business yet, and never did! We ran after that "high" that seemed good enough. Know, I don't talk shit, I don't have a partner, and I own over 1 million in real-estate. Be careful of the fake "sense of success". It will not get you anywhere.

Best example I can think of when it comes to the release of dopamine was back when I used to smoke weed. I can remember noticing this for many years... I always noticed that the "ritual" (breaking up buds, queuing up a movie, getting snacks for later ready now, prepping myself to be comfortable on the couch) leading up to the smoke session was always as gratifying (if not more) than the actual smoke session itself. The key is to know what you really want. Get a taste of what you want.
When it's over, the lack of what you want will feel painful. Now you become motivated to get what you want. Not pursuing your desire becomes so painful that the path of least resistance is now doing the thing that will make your life better.
The pain of not having what you want is a much stronger motivator than self-discipline.

What a great practical video, Alex. Really love the latest direction of content on the channel. I've been keeping up with your videos since I joined source wave a handful of years back and watching you evolve as an entrepreneur is really inspiring. Thanks for everything.

This is very similar to a book called thinking fast and slow, it talks about the relationship between our system 1 of thinking and its pursuit for cognitive ease and our logical system 2 which only acts up when it feels it needs to

this is so weird at first i thought it was just another video with a clickbait title which would just promote some course, but after watching this video i got to say this is the most practical self improvement advice i've received. he just explained a really complex concept in 40 mins.

You coded your own game last week. I've watched a couple dozen of your videos. On dopamine especially, I've had business plans in 2012 and thought 5 years out and before I knew it 2020 was among me and no progress was made. I've slowly tried to adapt some of the detox concepts 50% with success but after watching this one again after realizing you did code something, really is a put your money where your mouth is situation. Going to delete everything and go full minimalist after Christmas. 2021 is the year

I 100% agree with all that was said in this video, but I must add, that you missed the fact that we CAN appreciate achievements after the dopamine hit by practicing gratitude. Being grateful in retrospect for what we have, what we’ve accomplished and the luck we’ve had along the way or the people who have helped us out. That’s how to get the dopamine hit after the fact.

    1) Don't give yourself all the cookies at once. Make everything a small goal that eventually gives a dopamine hit.
    2) Join communities of like minded people
    3) Destroy overstimulating dopamine releases(get rid of fatty foods, video games etc.)

"If you focus on progress and mastery to increase your perceived value, how do you effectively do this while not talking about your success within a community?"
I understand there's a subtle difference, but I'm not exactly seeing it yet.

It's all about "will I win the next game? What's my rating right now?" lol. But if I sit down and say , "Hey I need to learn C# for my next job about 4 hours and I'm done".
