She's absolutely the root cause of this entire problem. She allowed her husband to treat her son like crap and used him as slave labor, because that's exactly what it is if you're making money and every dollar is going into someone else's pocket.

You make a strong point! It’s tough to let go of the past, especially when the hurt runs deep. How do you think he should balance self-protection with the possibility of forgiveness?

@@RedditFamilyTales forgiveness is only for those deserving of it and for the person who was hurt if they can't change then it's no point for reconciliation.

Unfortunately, parents like this are too common. They choose their new partner over their child because they are being alone is the worst option, ever. OP's mother left him alone in a house with a power tripping control freak who was 1 inch from throwing him out on the street.
OP's mother does not deserve a place in his new life, especially when she did not contribute to helping him build it. The fact that she showed up to the meet with Mark is proof that she's not looking for reconciliation or to ask for forgiveness, she just wants money. If OP can endure slumming it as a teenager, then his mother and Mark, both experienced adults, can do the same. This is a problem that they created and now they have to deal with it.

Do you think there's any situation where helping them might be the right choice, or is it best to protect himself and move on?

If he wanted to help his mom just so she doesn't become homeless,, he could've conditioned his help on a divorce, so that none of his help reaches Mark. It's not enough to act sorry, mom has to choose him over the man who she claims to understand has controlled her.
No divorce? No help. Mark can go do pizza delivery

This is yet another proof that women are more than willing to give up their children for their new love.
