YOU guys who happen to be HUMOURS AND INFORMATIVE Doctors are GREAT!!!! I finally found a GP with common sense who warned me about everything stated in this video! I am now taking drastic steps to IMPROVE my eating, staying away from SUGAR and when the INFLAMMATION SUBSIDES I'll get more active on my treadmill and recumbent bike. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks, for explaining what "Metabolic Syndrome" is and the 5 factors that contribute to MS. Please continue the great job in educating the masses. Also, I enjoy the humor.
There is a phenomenon known as normal weight metabolic syndrome: a seemingly healthy, fit person suddenly finds herself pre-diabetic and often with trigliceride/cholesterol issues. A friend just found out she is one of these people and is mystified.
Thank you for mentioning Ehlers Danlos syndrome even if just for a brief moment. It doesn’t get nearly enough recognition and is something that I struggle with daily along with other conditions.
Another great one! I went to see the doc almost 10 years ago with a gouty foot. I saw a different doc in the practice than my normal primary care doc. He glanced at the foot, looked at some recent blood work, and spent the rest of the time reaming my keister for presenting with 5 of 5 of the metabolic syndrome symptoms. A year and 50 few pounds later I was doing much better! (Except maybe for triglycerides. Ugh!)
I lowered my triglycerides, made several changes so I’m not sure if one change is responsible or all together: eat mostly WFPB, very little dairy, small amount of fish & eggs, lost weight, eating lots of nuts: almonds, walnuts, pistachios and peanut butter, try to walk after most meals
great information. Makes it tougher when there are no symptoms to go with a syndrome. Also it can make it tougher for some people (like me) to deal with when you don't really feel bad. When there is pain or loss of the use of something, it's right in your face all the time. Self-discipline is good to have.
Very well done video. Thank you. Educational and entertaining at the same time. Quick question: what do you consider an "elevated" fasting glucose ? Typically, it's not flagged as abnormal on labs unless greater than or equal to 100; however, I've heard some say
Oh my Metabolic Syndrome. You guys crack me up. I just about spit my coffee. I had the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, got rid of it by having surgery on both wrists. Taking meds for HBP , that’s under control. Eating well, not out of a well. Exercises to keep that waistline smaller helps me do up my belt without walking backwards or looking in a mirror. All in all I do think I’m on a roll to keeping away from the Metabolic Syndrome chat box. Thanks again you two Docs. You make the world of medicine a lot more fun, educational and I look forward to seeing so much more.
Hi guys! I was just thinking of the Ella Fitzgerald song … “Every time we say goodbye, I die a little.” Except in my case, it’s every time we say hello! You two are killing me off bit by bit! Please, talk about something I haven’t got, before it’s too late! How about “Eternal Youth “ or “A pill to lose weight without dieting” ? Love to listen to the pair of you. Stay well and keep safe …. Yes I have VEDS. Took me 50yrs to get diagnosed! More EDS people appearing youtube comments! Sadly in Ontario only a children's clinic in Toronto for EDS, no one helps us older folks!
Hello docs. Bending you elbow will get you every time. Thats one exercise that never make your arm any bigger just your waist line or ruining your liver.Thank you for the great videos always very informative !!!!!!
The waist measure is supposed to be done around the point above the waist I think. BMI seems like an archaic method while body fat percentage is probably best but hard to measure accurately. Primary care doctors can often just say you need to drop weight if needed. BP and blood sugar often improve with weight loss. My food scale and body scales are key in keeping the weight down. Without accurate, often weigh-in the weight can creep up.
I have a bit of laziness das all....large waistline. Got the small portions down just have to delete the snack!!! All labs are normal except elevated LDL. Sugar a little elevated but less than last appt, 125, white coat syndrome? Funny guys.
Hi Andrew. There is no one specific food. Best eating advice is don’t over eat. Eat mostly plants. Avoided added sugar and processed food. It’s a start. Thanks for watching and subscribing
You guys are so funny, I love your sense of humor. Quick question, there is so much information about high triglycerides based on diet. What about alcohol? I have a martini in the evening and my triglycerides were high and I eat super healthy (no chix wings for me). I asked my doctor could my drink cause an increase in my numbers, He says no, I say yes. Thoughts?
My triglycerides were elevated the last time and usually they aren’t but I wasn’t fasting. My Dr told me not to worry about it. I just need to be sure I’m fasting the next time I have it done. It was like 240. I’m taking Berberine and eating healthier so I’ve lost about 10 pounds and my A1C is going down and my HDL is going up. I think I’m on the right track. I’ve just got to start moving more.
Is elevated insulin level (not blood glucose) an early marker for metabolic syndrome? What is the best maker that indicates a person is storing excess energy that is detrimental to health?
Gonna go measure my waist. I think I’m borderline, even though I have a healthy diet. It’s not bad genes - more likely menopause, fitting in exercise to a busy sedentary work schedule, and unfortunately difficulty weaning myself off citalopram after a long (years) period of use. Currently in a hopefully successful taper down process to get off of it then really incorporate fitness. I wish getting on citalopram had been a slower, more thoughtful decision. It’s not for everyone. Interesting to hear that it only takes 3 of these 5 issues to put you in the syndrome.

Eat to live. Don't live to eat. Move your body, often. Drink plenty of water. The butt you save may be your own. Fact Jack ( or Jill .) Thank you Docs. 😊.
Just sneaking here to ask for your views on fish oil supplements. Not the (given)value of omega-3, but the capsules. Mayo and Harvard are lukewarm, some studies suggest that the fish oil without the actual fish is useless, and yet some doctors are pro. Would love your professional view, maybe as a Journal update. I hang on your every word, even when you cheerfully predict my demise by stroke/heart attack/lots of other things
Ha Elizabeth! We will take a look for sure. We have superficially looked and the data does seem to be inconclusive with a lean towards not beneficial. Thanks for watching and subscribing
If one controls blood pressure and triglycerides with medication and without the medication, both those measures are high, do you consider that you have high BP and blood sugar & figure you have Metabolic Syndrome?
What if you are menopausal, weight training four days a week, to cardio three days a week, log all of your food with a heavy emphasis on protein because you are trying for hypertrophy and yet you have all of those signs in no matter what you do your weight does not move?
the main question is can we cure it permanently if i manage to control and weight loss, Recently i am diagnosed with diabetes, high tsh, high cholesterol, very high triglyceride etc.
LOVE you Guys! I am so glad I can get reasonable advice and worthwhile education every morning with a jovial wit. An aside, I do prefer when your scrubs are ironed! :P . I'm particular that way :) Stay healthy!
You forgot antidepressants and antipsychotic medications as a cause. My doctor prescribed those for my anxiety and I just figured out it caused my weight gain and now I’m freaking out trying to understand if it causes a lifelong worsening of lipid and sugar metabolism, are those things the same as the metabolic syndrome, can it be reversed and how.
Can you guys do a reaction to videos from channels like "vigorous steve" who give advice on DIY HRT, sometimes for performance enhancement, sometimes for "optimised" HRT
Hi David. We typically don’t get into it with those kinds of channels as there is simply so many things wrong with what they say. The internet and social media is a dangerous place where you can say whatever you want. We will do an HRT video though. Thanks for watching
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks for the reply! I guess it would be hard to fact check everything given there is so much content. That said, understanding why they are wrong in some specific topics would be very educational as I don't see any medical professionals publically commenting on these DIY HRT or PED protocols. Given the unbelievable uptake of PEDs in young people today and the prevalence of these bootleg endocrinology channels, I feel there is an opportunity for harm reduction.
The problem I have is my doctor wants to treat each individual symptom separately and not look at the whole, which includes genetics. Additionally, treatments for one thing like high blood pressure leads to weight gain which feeds back onto itself creating more diseases. My healthcare is through the VA and all they love to do is prescribe more pills without looking at the cause. For example, my back pain in my kidney's, just take more pain medication. Went to an outside doctor who immediately found I had Kidney Cancer. Why are some doctors adversarial and think the patient doesn't know what they are talking about. I am pre-diabetic based upon my A1C according to the CDC's and ADA's own guidelines, and everyone in my family except me is diabetic, yet I keep getting push back from my doctor, saying the VA uses different guidelines. What the heck, either I am pre-diabetic or not. I tick of all 5 of the metabolic conditions. Sorry, just venting, as going to the doctor for care shouldn't feel like you are in a fight to prove you know your own body, and your own family history.
If you have those signs and symptoms does that mean you automatically have metabolic syndrome? Or is it just a really good kick in the butt to get yourself motivated and do something so it doesn't become full-blown metabolic syndrome?
