I've been very fortunate to get 3 reservations per year at Rao's for the last 23 years. The food, ambience and the history of the place is superb. You never know who you'll see there. The experience is unforgettable. Sadly, when Frank Pellegrino passed away a few years ago, Rao's lost some of its charm. To listen to Frank sing "My Girl" was simply amazing.

Mr. Frank Pellegino Sr. (RIP) was one of a kind, the warmest host in NYC. I was so sad to hear that he had passed. RIP to Nicky The Vest too. Nothing can replace the “It’s A Wonderful Life” vibe that they brought.
A visit to the former “Marie Chiaro” Bar (now known as “Mulberry Street Bar”) does the trick - especially watching some of the old timers sing on Karaoke 🎤 Saturday’s.

I just hope these old traditions don’t die with guys like Frank. When I used to go out to eat Italian with Dad and Mom back in the day there was no menu. And the staff would sing to you as you ate and drank the night away. I never ate at Rao’s but I can totally relate because my parents took me to places like this in Little Italy when I was a kid.

!st time I called for reservation for a friend, Frankie answered and said "how did you get this number" rather indignantly. I called several influential friends who were able to get the reservation, but only on Thursday Night, as it turned out pretty much as often as I needed. Only in New York, could you get away with that....

Those jarred sauces... the best. No, really, you cant make them as good. I dont care what anybody says 99,99% of those people who claim they can make em better, cant! And the 0,01% that can they only score a tie against bottled sauce. Its that good.

I'm an Indian who has developed a fair palate for Italian cuisine travelling through Europe. This restaurant is truly authentic being outside Italy. Probably, it's the owner's thought of keeping things simple that makes it that way.
I mean just look at the dishes, you'll agree with what I'm sayin.
