  • I made this video when I was fifteen. It shows the rides at Playland in 1960. They include the Alpine Racer, Crazy Dazy, Tilt a Whirl, Roto Jet, Flying Coaster, Rock o Plane, Dodger Bumper cars, Merry Go Round, Laffing Sal at the Fun House, Octopus, Dark Mystery, Hey Dey, and the Diving Bell. Then leads to my second video of the Cliff House Sutro Sky Tram. Ron Biagini

thanks Ron, I grew up at 48th and taraval in 1953, and spent many years at playland and rode every ride in that film. had two of those same bumper cars also. what a great time growing up in san Francisco, when it truly was still san Francisco.

I would love to hear what you mean about how San Francisco was different back then compared to now. I wonder what it was like before the mid-1970s was it just all working class people? I’d love to hear

Very nice video. I was much younger, 4 and 5, when we'd go there in 1956 and 57. I loved the Fun House.

This was such a great place. It is to bad that it was not saved. So much fun and some of the best food served.

@@djmixnmagic I grew up in the inner sunset in the mid 50’s and went to Playland at the Beach many times. The last time was in 1970 just 2 years before it was demolished. Some of my best memories was when TV personality Bob March’s ride blew over and crashed in high winds. Also the great food out at Playland. The Mexican resturant “The Hot House” served the best tamales and enchiladas bar none. And although many don’t remember, the historic Charles I. D. Looff Carousel that had 68 animals and 4 working band organs ran at a speed of 18 mph, one of the fastest carousels ever built. It was one of the few things that survived the demolition in 1972 and thankfully now operates at Yerba Buena Park at 4th & Howard Street in San Francisco. Many more memories to write here. All the old amusement park rides, the roller plane, the Twister ride right next to the Diving Bell, and the scary dark ride “Limbo” just down from the Fun House. Lots of memories. So sad the City did nothing to save it in 1972. Just like letting the historic Fox Theatre on Market Street get demolished in 1963. Very sad. Thankfully I have many pictures of Playland from the late 40’s thru the demolition days from family and friends thru the years.

For me it was all the great rides and the many good food places to eat. I was born in the mid 50's and my first visit to Playland was probably around 1960. By then it was already past it's hey days in the 40's, but there was a lot of fun rides out there. Unfortunately they tore down the Giant dipper roller coaster in 1955, but they had a small steel coaster called the Wild Mouse (later name was changed to Alpine Racer) a beautiful Charles Looff merry go round with 68 animals 2 chariots and 4 working band organs operating on it. Great food places like the Pie Shop, The Chicken Range, Bull Pup enchiladas, The Hot House (great enchiladas and tamales) also a good kabab and burger joint by the merry go round building. San Francisco should have saved it from destruction in 1972.

I went to Playland the last day it was open. I was eight years old. It was shabby but I loved it and had a great time. The Fun House was awesome. i wish they could have saved it from the wrecking ball. It was a great place and I miss it.

Wow thanks for the video brings back a lot of memories. My name is John Bulawsky andI worked at Playland in 1967 1968. I actually met my wife there in 1968 her name is Judy Craig at the time. I operated just about every ride at at Playland and yes I was oneof the the guys who is in the Funhouse operating the air machine for a period of time. The last eight or ten months I spent working there was working at the diving Bell. One night we closed the fun house and there was an older man their name Potter who told us that all Mann-Whitney used to get drunk and go down the Funhouse light standing up. So there was three of us Pete Canaan the second guy I don't remember his name and then myself and so of course we try to go down the slide standing up. I think Pete was the first guy to go down he ended up over the rail near the barrel and the second got to go down he ended up on the rail at the end of the slide I was a third want to go down and modified my position a little bit so I didn't get quite as airborne is the first two guys. Anyway great memories thanks for posting the video.

Hey did u also run the ride next to the diving bell called Twister? I also remember when West Coast Shows took over the amusement park they brought in new rides like the skywheel and the Meteor and the Calypso. I lived in the inner Sunset district and visited Playland from 1960 to 1971

This is really great. My mother, sister and I would go to the Hot House, which was at Playland, for some Mexican food and then play games. Sometimes, before dinner, we would go on the rides. My dad was working the night shift in the composing room at Sorg Printing Company, so he missed out on the fun.

I grew up in West Portal and Sunset. I would go to Playland on most of the rides. The Arcades had plenty games and unique machines to engage with. Food was fun to eat and being at the "Beach" was awesome. One time, the Rollercoaster car I was in, slowed down and got stuck right before the big dip. The operator came up, walked on the tracks and gave me a push...down I went. He also offered a free ride again ! Brave soul he was...happy days. San Francisco needs another Amuesment Park Center.

I used to drive our cook (MING) to the Playland every time we worked on the same shift...I always enjoyed the 20 mile drive. I would drop him off at the bus stop since he lived in Chinatown (worked in Linda Mar--Pacifica) I would pick up an Its It and go back home.

Wow! That really brings back some memories. In 62 through 67 my brother and I would bust butt during the summer making some money so dad would drop us off and come pick us up about 4 hours later. Sometimes we'd go as a family at night which was more fun. Anyone remember "Laughing Sally" going into the fun house? Tge bumper cars were cool. The submersible diving bell you got into was not my favorite. The water was dirty. Loved the roller-coaster.
Hope there's a few folks out there that remember that special place.
    Be safe everyone

What a great video. Hey Marvin, I was a friend of Dave Warren, I met you at Yerba Buena where I think you were running the Playland carousel. I remember the carousel had 4 band organs when it was running at Playland. I know the Artizian band organ is in a private collection in the Bay Area, and the Wurlitzer 165 is up in Santa Cruz. Do you know what ever became of the 2 Wurlitzer 153's that also ran on the Playland carousel?

Since the portable video recording camera wasn't generally available until the late 1980s, what is wrong with just calling this a "film" or "home movie?" Those are perfectly good words! ;-)
    Nice film, by the way...

I worked at Playland 1968 thru the end and now I volunteer at Playland-NOT-at-the-Beach in El Cerrito every Saturday. It would be great to have a copy of this on a flash drive to show people that come into our Museum of Fun. We are a 501 C 3 non-profit community based organization. May I use this? Is there a way for me to show it without having an internet connection?
