Update November 2024: My original inspiration to begin this project was the first sub-50 speedrun in any% and the then upcoming release of the Rehydrated remake. The original scope for parts 3 and 4 was to discuss everything from 2017 through the first 49, then briefly mention the first 48 in closing. But beyond our expectations, Battle for Bikini Bottom contunued evolving nonstop over the last 4 years. So many developments and storylines later, we are now at a 41:03, just one minute away from the 40-minute barrier. Unless something absolutely game-breaking such as useful ACE is discovered, 39 will be the final time this game crosses a 10-minute barrier in any% for decades, if not forever. And much like the first sub-50, it will serve as my narrative inspiration for my new vision of the BfBB speedrun documentaries. In the meantime, this is the most exciting time to be following this game's live developments, and it may take around 18 months in my estimation to reach this goal. After which, much like before, even an eventual 38 will not change the scope of my planned recount of this game's timeline. Mark your calendars for 2026, and the wait will be worth it. An entire decade in the making to bring you the Sponge-Tastic Trials. Video format update: th-cam.com/video/BMufLDgxWe8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ezw6P_3vOo1AodXy

I had a great time running this game in 2016, and I feel honored to be featured in this documentary. Time goes by so quickly, a lot of the events noted in this video feel like they happened only a year or two ago. I remember watching some of the featured runs and reaction clips live, and experiencing them again makes me feel a sense of joy and nostalgia. This community has worked tremendously hard, especially after my short involvement in 2016, to optimize their categories and market the game into increased relevancy, and that's something to be very proud of. "In the meantime, we sincerely wish you the best experience with BFBB Rehydrated." I have ABSOLUTELY no explanation for this, but as soon as that line was said, I instantly smiled and cried my eyes out. This game truly defined my childhood. I'm just a casual player as I simply never had the time or motivation to dive into professional speedrunning (though I've been a fan of speedrunning since I watched SHiFT at GDQ. Yes, the one in this very video), but since I was a kid till now, it has always been my favorite game by a landslide. For the past 15 years, I have been consistently 100%'ing it about once or twice a month. I just finished up my freshman year at college, and before we all were sent back home, I would sit in my dorm room with my GameCube playing this game all the damn time. My roommate, friends, girls, etc. would not ~necessarily~ make fun of me, but they would always say to me that they just don't understand the appeal of a SpongeBob video game from 2003 being played by a 19-year-old college dude. I'll tell you, it is hard to come up with an explanation! But I figured by leaving this comment for members of this AMAZING community of active speedrunners, and pure fans to read, I have this to say: BFBB is more than just a video game to me. It is a piece of art in ways that only those who have direct experiences with it can even fathom. It is beautiful, a ton of fun, and NEVER gets boring. When I first heard the news about the HD remake, I decided to commit myself to a VERY VERY VERY challenging task. I decided to make a vow to myself involving a written contract (which, yes, I actually signed) to never look at a single screenshot, video, trailer, article, or anything relating to Rehydrated until I had a controller in my hands, and was playing it myself. I want my first experience with this game to me magical, breathtaking, and extremely emotional. Now that we are LESS THAN TEN days away from that dream becoming a reality, I have been successful in my vow (thanks to a clutch closing of the eyes after that picture was shown at 1:28:56 that says "The Battle Is On") and literally cannot contain my excitement to spend my entire day playing the shit out of this game on the Switch come the 23rd. I would like to close this comment with a message to SHiFT [so if you've read this far into this, don't be shy, and give me a like to he might see this(: ]. Please forgive me, I am not very active on Twitch so I am not a sub of yours, but I am very active on your TH-cam channel and I've been following you for years. UPDATE April 2022: th-cam.com/video/wQM3lXaOZPA/w-d-xo.html Hey all. I figure this would be the best place to post I'm doing a full rewrite on the scripts for parts 3 and 4. I'm pleased with the scope, but not with how the information was presented as it can be made much more entertaining. Makes sense considering how rushed I was to write the full documentary script in the first place (full research and 50,00+ word count in 3 weeks). My original plan was to have all 4 parts done before Rehydrated, but as we know, the game was announced way earlier than expected so that became unrealistic. This encouraged me to focus on perfecting the first 2 parts, since there was no way I'd finish all 4 in time and I wanted to release 3 and 4 together. Simply because they're part of the same story, just split up because of length (this was originally supposed to be a trilogy). But with the increase in quality for the first 2 parts, my standards for the final 2 are way higher. It may take a long time to get them done, but I promise they'll be worth the wait.
I have no doubt whatsoever. Take all the time you need; I'll wait until the end of the year, the end of the decade, or even the release of BotW 2 for you.
When I first heard about this project, I'll admit I was confused why you wouldn't partner with someone like summoningsalt. Now I understand why. This level of pure passion and quality could only have been achieved by those who had poured their heart and soul into this game. Even with all of the hype surrounding this video, especially coming off of the excellent first part, you and everyone else involved still managed to overdeliver on that hype. Part 3 cannot come soon enough.
i saw part 1 because i liked BFBB when i was a kid, not knowing anything about speedrunning it, or really much of speed running in general. but i couldnt wait for this part 2 to come out, and holy moly i really like it. great video. thanks for this. also i hope your arm is doing okay.
It's fully healed now, ty! I've made some changes to my editing setup so it doesn't get injured again... And of course, I'll be more careful not to overwork my wrist next time. This deadline was extremely difficult to meet, but Parts 3 and 4 will hopefully be less stressful since Rehydrated will have already been released.
@SHiFT hey man take as much time as you need, dont want to get your wrist hurt, how else are you supposed to be part of THE INTERNATIONAL CIRCLE JERK OF SUPER ACQUAINTANCES
All of this sick shit happened just half a year before i discovered this community. its come a long day and i am amazed. i've seen this run change so much since june of 2017, the new tricks like boat bash, gcc, ballroom, and eventually... SBA. i can't wait for them all to be discussed.
This video is perfect. To sum up all of the records, friendships, events, and emotions that came along with it was amazing in the time frame presented. I wasn't even around for this and it made me feel something. Truly a timeless video. The narration, skits, music, animations, transitions, and editing was such a step up. You and your team exceeded all expectations. Much love
This was a really great documentary man. The build up to the AGDQ part was one of the best things I have seen. It genuinely had me in tears man. This game was my childhood. Thank you for the nostalgia trip. I can tell you worked really hard on this.
I was super worried because I know of the agdq drama with the game at one point but I didn't know the history behind it. I'm glad that the drama was not on this run but instead a later one.
that's high praise, i appreciate it. bfbb has evolved nonstop over the past 4 years (and still is), and i'd like to make sure any future history project will age well. so i plan on detailing the rest, but when i feel the time is right.
I absolutely loved how this video turned out. Many points in this video had me laughing my ass off, and, just like part 1, the production quality was absolutely off the charts; there was never a dull moment to be had. Its still crazy to think that the few early runners of this game started a chain of events that eventually led to BFBB Rehydrated becoming a reality.
At 3:50 the image of the crowd has Timmy's silhouette far right. Seems this could be the "specific kind" of easter egg since 32 was mentioned in reference to Chip Skylark's hit single My Shiny Teeth And Me earlier in the video. Edit: As RipScaper pointed out below, the silhouette is Chip himself.
While I haven't done any speedruns, I'm a watcher of all games and this series is an incredible in-depth look into the game, excellent work and these and looking forward to the next two parts and Rehydrated once it comes out.
This is incredible content, and really shows how much this community cares about it's game, dating as far back as the two og runners. Cannot wait for the next two parts!
Shift I legit have no words for how high quality these videos are. I’ve loved Bfbb since I first discovered it, and have been watching runs since 2016, I’m excited to see what your gonna do with the remaster. Good shit Shift and keep it up!
Idk why but it makes me so happy that cole and hazel were able to see their strategies grow and develop and inevitably bring what they were trying so hard to get :)
lose...LOSE I don't want to make a rage comment but before you get confronted with many of them you should...change your wording a little, just trying to help ya pal
I believe we owe it to Shift and every other runner for bringing attention to the game and showing that many enjoy this game. Without that attention THQ may not have had planned for a remake of the game. Whether you played it way back then or you just discovered the game from the last several years of speed running it, im sure everyone is excited for the remake to come out! This was one of my personal favorite games as a kid and i wanna thank Shift and the rest of the community for helping me relive those days through the videos and now through the remake! Thanks!
I would have never imagined this game that was already amazing to me during my childhood become so big and even more enjoyable with such a great community behind it. Can't wait for the next parts!
hearing that one of the main guys who worked on the game reached out is so good, like when he pushed the project in 2003 he likely had no idea the game would defy its budget to this degree. it's enough to make a grown man cry, and I will
Man I love this community. I'm so glad I found this game though I never played it as a kid. The passion I have seen and felt through watching and playing is unlike anything I've experienced in gaming before. This is easily one of the greatest videos I've watched and one of the greatest experiences I've had on Twitch. Love you all and I especially appreciate you, shift, for bringing everybody together throughout the years and for years to come.
Awwwwe you didn't get to play this when it came out, if you were like 7 when this came out, this was our everything. I'm happy you're in the community ❤️
I know this series will likely never be finished, but man those 2 episodes are high quality and well made! Some of the best speedruning content that's been produced, I'd say on par with Summoning Salt's content. Hope you're doing well SHiFT :)
doing great thanks! back when i started this series we had no idea how much more of the game was left to discover. the follow-up once things settle down will be beautiful once the opportunity arises :)
This was an absolutely beautifully intense and powerful documentary/story. This documentary series has gotten me so invested in a game I didn't even know existed until I found out about speedrunning that I ended up crying at the end of this video. I'm so happy for the time and dedication that went into what was destined to be a forgotten licensed game and to see all that dedication pay off in the most beautiful way. It's rare for the stars to align in such a way to bring people together and see a game once thought to be an nonoptimal speedrunning experience to one of the most iconic speedrunned games of all time. The fact that we're only somehow half way through the history this far into development is insane to me (and who knows what future may hold as well). I don't really know where this goes from here but I can't wait to find out! Though I don't personally speedrun (in fact it normally takes me twice as long as most people to beat games casually) the concept and history of it all has always fascinated me. So thank you to all the speedrunners who have put there time and effort into the game.
shift, you have created such an outstanding video and is even better than the last. I have really enjoyed seeing you progress through this past year and I love to see how successful you turned out to be and this series alone shows how great you are. I love how much passion you put into this game and the community around it and I'm so happy that you are the person to give this community the attention and success it deserves. I love this series and I cannot wait for the last 2 parts. wait for rehydrated is almost over and I cant wait to see your success go further with rehydrated and of course parts 3 and 4.
Man, what a ride. The progression of this game is baffling, so happy to see one of my childhood games gather all this attention and am excited to play the remaster! Loved the telling of how this community and the speedruns have grown and the splendid, yet silly editting. I'll be patiently waiting for Parts 3 and 4, keep up the amazing work!
I really do love and appreciate all the handwork you guys put into bringing BFBB back, it really deserved it, it is such an amazing game that a lot of us have nostalgia for myself included. We still have a video that my parents filmed of me opening this game as a Christmas present back in 2003 when I was only 5 years old. I loved this game from the moment I started playing it and it will always have a special place in my heart as well as many others. I enjoy watching shift and the others streams and content as well as all the youtube videos. Keep up the great work and thank you guys for all that you have done we love you guys and this community!
"We believed this was the final minute barrier in this speedrun" * Looks at timestamp, 30 minutes in an hour and half video "It was not the last minute barrier in this speedrun"
I honestly just got into this community after hearing about rhydraded coming out, and to hear the fascinating tale of how this community rose from the grave because of such a fun to watch speedrun by incredible people to push a sequel is so cool. Congratulations to everyone, and thank you for now letting me remember a childhood memory
Watching this got me weirdly emotional towards the end. Shift getting a 59, and finally getting the game in GDQ. Just seeing where this game and speedrun has gone over time is really heartwarming, and I'm glad you guys are producing this documentary series.
This is a game I grew up with, and the first game that taught me the values of dedication and commitment in overcoming seemingly impossible odds. Truly, that ball room was a nightmare.
This and part 1 have become a couple of my all-time favourite videos! I genuinely love how much passion was put into this, ranging from the editing, narration, and the storytelling! You, SMloader, and everyone who contributed did such an amazing job! 💛 I really look forward to parts 3 and 4! I hope it goes well for you and everyone involved in the process, and stay hydrated as well!
Hey I'm happy to hear you loved these. In the meantime while you're waiting definitely check out my new World Record Explained series. Part 2 is coming this weekend :)
This is incredible, probably the best speed running documentary series out there. the passion is just amazing. When rehydrated drops I’m getting it right away
I never realized how wide of an impact bfbb's speedrunning had in generating new fans of the game. Really giving me a new perspective on how big speedrunning really was for bfbb.
Holy crap, this video is so many things, it's like an tournament arc with all the runners competing. Then the rising action and gradual fall repeating back and forth, and when all hope was lost, out of the shadows one runner was determined to be the top, he revitalized the community. And yet this was only the beginning, my god.
This is one of those games that you wake up in a cold sweat 10 years later and temporarily remember it for a brief second before passing out again as you enter dream hell once more
26:33 oh yes. The International Circle Jerk Of Super Acquaintances. a super hero team thats much better then danger force and whatever those new characters that marvel has revealed for the comics are
Finally got around to watching this While I originally intended to just drop a meme "bruh you're insane" here and move on, I really gotta sing this video's praises. Not only were the jokes and cameos on point, but the emphasis on community togetherness painted a clear picture in my head of what it was like to witness the "golden age" of BFBB firsthand. The tricks were also explained in a way that I feel I could understand even if I didn't have any prior exposure to this game at all, which is no simple task.
So many things in this video register emotionally for me. Namely, the AGDQ hype. That was insane. You can't really hear about a story like this and not feel something inside. Complete respect to you and your community. And massive appreciation for how real and transparent this video series is. I doubt anyone can come away from a video like this without having a newfound respect and deeper appreciation for this community.
It’s actually an actual phenomenon called a brine pool, water with salinity (salt concentration) so high that it can’t mix with the water around it. It’s so dense that it creates a distinct shoreline with the surrounding water. The brine pools are very toxic to marine life, not only due to the high salinity, but also the high concentration of hydrogen sulphide and methane gasses. Honestly everyone at goo lagoon are living like Larry considering the dangers
I still find so fricking funny that shift, the cruise boost master, started just with a quickster profile, and a small stream called "Ruining your childhood", and now, even the developers of the remake know his techniques.

Take as long as you need, you’re doing god’s work with these videos. Take care man.
Thank you for taking me back to my childhood , you’re a walking 🐐
I have no doubt whatsoever. Take all the time you need; I'll wait until the end of the year, the end of the decade, or even the release of BotW 2 for you.
Take your time bro. Appreciate the update!
Thank you for keeping us updated! Take all the time you need, but I'm very happy to know this series is still being worked on :)
This is the most impressive video i’ve ever watched
And there will be 2 more with similar quality ;D

I'm over here thinking _why does a speedrun have lore? and why is it like a world war sponge?_
It truly is 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 of Bikini Bottom
Okay. But I kinda dig calling WR history/speedrun historys lore.
Speedrunning Lore sounds cool to me.
im so glad there's people like you who still play this masterpiece. also this was so interesting and enjoyable.
I can’t wait for the other parts

Playing it on a hacked wii
This video is perfect. To sum up all of the records, friendships, events, and emotions that came along with it was amazing in the time frame presented. I wasn't even around for this and it made me feel something. Truly a timeless video. The narration, skits, music, animations, transitions, and editing was such a step up. You and your team exceeded all expectations. Much love
It’s so weird hearing Shift’s name in 3rd person
IN HD
well for what it's worth, he wasn't the one saying it xd
This was a really great documentary man. The build up to the AGDQ part was one of the best things I have seen. It genuinely had me in tears man. This game was my childhood. Thank you for the nostalgia trip. I can tell you worked really hard on this.
I was super worried because I know of the agdq drama with the game at one point but I didn't know the history behind it. I'm glad that the drama was not on this run but instead a later one.
I hope we get part 3 soon because this is probably the best story about speed running
that's high praise, i appreciate it. bfbb has evolved nonstop over the past 4 years (and still is), and i'd like to make sure any future history project will age well. so i plan on detailing the rest, but when i feel the time is right.
WOW! You got Uncle Al for The Super Acquaintances bit! I love that this is a celebration of SpongeBob as a whole, as well as the speedrun!

"Wanna see me do it again" I can't explain with words how perfect that fits. The humor was also on point, a huge improvement from part 1.

Sounds like the exact same voiceactor as in the game... is it though?

I actually started tearing up during the end. The whole GDQ segment was perfect!! What you have achieved is amazing
The pacing of this video feels like an anime especially the mid season finally at the end
The fact that this featured Banjo-Kazooie music gets an automatic 10/10 from me

Anyone found any Easter eggs?
The old man going across the screen like in the 24 hour episode
At 3:50 the image of the crowd has Timmy's silhouette far right. Seems this could be the "specific kind" of easter egg since 32 was mentioned in reference to Chip Skylark's hit single My Shiny Teeth And Me earlier in the video.
Edit: As RipScaper pointed out below, the silhouette is Chip himself.
Wow good one
@@seetanam nice find!
Yeah, this "SHiFT" guy the video keeps reffering about seems to have sone coinnection to the author of the video...
While I haven't done any speedruns, I'm a watcher of all games and this series is an incredible in-depth look into the game, excellent work and these and looking forward to the next two parts and Rehydrated once it comes out.
God I've been waiting for part 2 for so long, I rewatched part 1 like 3 times while waiting. Glad you took your time to make it the best it can be
cannot wait for part 3
I didn’t know Marx was a BFBB fan. Impossible for that man to disappoint.
This was emotional.
the art of all of the runner's icons together being friends hit me hard and i only just now learned about them, gg
Last time I was this early, the Krusty Krab hadn’t even turned eleventy-seven yet!!
The last time I was this early, the Krusty Krab was still selling pizza.
This is incredible content, and really shows how much this community cares about it's game, dating as far back as the two og runners. Cannot wait for the next two parts!
This video was so well made it hurts. It's just so insanely well edited, written, and narrated.
I love that you got Uncle Al to be the announcer for the League of Super Acquaintances bit
See I was gonna spend my afternoon being productive and now I’m about to lose an hour and a half of my life. Great
Don’t see anything wrong with that lol
It's not a waits of time if you learn something from the video.

I don't want to make a rage comment but before you get confronted with many of them you should...change your wording a little, just trying to help ya pal

Thanks!
No words can describe how legendary this game, it's community and this video is. Thank you.
Thx to everyone who worked on the video, the premiere was awesome.
I would have never imagined this game that was already amazing to me during my childhood become so big and even more enjoyable with such a great community behind it. Can't wait for the next parts!
The bizzare fate of Shift using The Quickster as his icon, and doing two :59 WRs in a row.
"You wanna see me do it again?" was almost too perfect.
This is enough to bring tears to a grown man's eyes. Beautifully produced! 😢❤
Agreed
hearing that one of the main guys who worked on the game reached out is so good, like when he pushed the project in 2003 he likely had no idea the game would defy its budget to this degree. it's enough to make a grown man cry, and I will
The memes, the history, the HYPE, this is such a fantastic video. Thank you so much for your hard work and GL on part three and four
Legit this came out when I needed it the most, lit.
Incredible video. To this day I still check every so often for when the Third one drops…
So thank you to all the speedrunners who have put there time and effort into the game.
yes i completely agree
Thank you shift, if it wasn’t for You, Coel and Hazel this game would be left in the dirt
Never thought I’d be so invested in a docu-series about a game I never new existed until this
shift, you have created such an outstanding video and is even better than the last.

I never realized how wide of an impact bfbb's speedrunning had in generating new fans of the game.
Really giving me a new perspective on how big speedrunning really was for bfbb.
Still is! ;)
I also never realized how much you cared about making bfbb more widely known as a good game.
Thanks for bringing attention to this amazing game.
thank you for doing this, I've been having a rough time and watching your streams and videos on yt has made it a lot better so thank you.
Holy crap, this video is so many things, it's like an tournament arc with all the runners competing. Then the rising action and gradual fall repeating back and forth, and when all hope was lost, out of the shadows one runner was determined to be the top, he revitalized the community. And yet this was only the beginning, my god.

I think we need a timestamp for Uncle Al and his feature in the International Circle Jerk of Super Acquaintances *tm*
i thought i was the only one that died right there lmaoooo

26:33 oh yes. The International Circle Jerk Of Super Acquaintances. a super hero team thats much better then danger force and whatever those new characters that marvel has revealed for the comics are
I’m glad it only took me 2 hours of this series to realize he was referring to himself in the third person
Finally got around to watching this
While I originally intended to just drop a meme "bruh you're insane" here and move on, I really gotta sing this video's praises.
The golden age has only just begun
So many things in this video register emotionally for me. Namely, the AGDQ hype. That was insane. You can't really hear about a story like this and not feel something inside. Complete respect to you and your community. And massive appreciation for how real and transparent this video series is. I doubt anyone can come away from a video like this without having a newfound respect and deeper appreciation for this community.
Me: Oh, cool. A beach.
Also me: *How is there water under water?*
its goo
It’s actually an actual phenomenon called a brine pool, water with salinity (salt concentration) so high that it can’t mix with the water around it. It’s so dense that it creates a distinct shoreline with the surrounding water.
The brine pools are very toxic to marine life, not only due to the high salinity, but also the high concentration of hydrogen sulphide and methane gasses.
