My number 1 will always be GHUA, partly because it was the album that got me into Slayer, partly because it is by far the heaviest album. You're a bit older than me but it's interesting that you rate the early albums highest (which many fans will) but GHUA comes straight after. Respect 🤘🏻

That sucks you weren’t able to catch them live. I saw Slayer only once at the Big Four at Yankee Stadium. I’ve met Kerry King, Dave Lombardo and Gary Holt. Hey Darcy! Hope all is well! Slayer is one of my all time favorite bands! So I was really excited to see this ranking!!! I will say that for the most part my ranking of these albums would be practically identical. I guess great minds think alike! Lol... A buddy of mine was a diehard Slayer fan and we used to have a blast talking about there albums. Whenever we were on the topic of best album it seemed like it was always between Seasons in the Abyss and Reign in Blood. To me flip a coin your right either way. We always seemed to conclude that Seasons was their best overall despite our absolute love for Reign in Blood. So I would have to say my only difference would be 1. Seasons and 2. Reign in Blood. Killer video Darcy . Slayer was just one of those bands that was one step ahead of the others in terms of heaviness I think . Only have Reign in Blood and Hell Awaits , both damn near perfect albums in my opinion. Next one I’m gonna get is the debut . Cool video 🤘

hey Darcy, great ranking! I really enjoy Reign in Blood, but my top 2 would be definitely be SOH, followed by Seasons. Those two resonate with me more than the others in the catalogue. While not at the top end of the list for me, I find Diabolus to be under-appreciated. There are a handful of great songs on there. Cheers

All 4 of the early albums are great haunting the chapel,live undead,hell awaits but show no mercy is my favorite its like every song on it is perfect.To me though it seems like they changed their style by the time reign in blood came out.
Great video Darcy! Your copy of World Painted Blood, never seen that cover before, I have only ever seen the all red cover. Slayer trivia: God Hates Us All was released September 11, 2001, I remember some of the hype around album title and events of that day. Stay heavy Bro.

I don't mean to rub it in, but I feel really sorry for you not having seen them live. I've seen them 3 times in Paris France, and they were the best metal concerts I've ever seen ( in French I would say it was " Dantesque" ). And I've seen quite a few bands ( Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Overkill, Sepultura, Exodus, Megadeth, Death, Motorhead....and so on). My favorite is Seasons, in which I find the drumming fascinating. Love your vids ; keep it up !

For me the top 3 are the same but different order - South of heaven at 1 , Abyss at 2 and Reign at 3. I could be convinced to switch 2 & 3 in there ranking easily any day of the week, I consider them that close. Been lucky that I have seen Slayer 4 times . 2 times with Jeff & 2 times with Gary. You know for me Divine Intervention is my introduction to Slayer and as you said when showing Repentless, there is such a wide fan base to Slayer that some albums are always going to suprise in a ranking. Nice ranking, as always... I agree with you what you said about Seasons in the Abyss, that it blends South... and Reign. I'd say that Seasons is the quintessence of what Slayer did before, so this is my Number One. (but the rest of the first five albums follow right behind). Skeletons of Society is to me a bit like a forgetten gem, I really love that song. But to be honest: for a ranking of the first five slayer albums you could roll a dice to make up ranking (and you wouldn't even be one short if you include the ep). Best whishes from Germany!

Hi Darcy! My top 5 is exactly the same. When Reign..came out, never heard anything like it (after the initially Master of Puppets experience). Like you said; we were even quite “afraid” of them :) When South..came out I was a little disappointed at first, because it was much slower at times. But over the years I started to love the doomy atmosphere of the album and now its my no 2 also. Seasons also was a grower for me. I saw them at the awesome Clash of the Titans tour here in Holland in 1990 with Suicidal, Testament and Megadeth. A day I will never forget!

I absolutely agree that Seasons was a blend of RiB and SoH. Hell Awaits is the album where they'd found their sound (and probably my favorite one to this day), Seasons is where their sound reached maturity. The slowed down touch of South of Heaven -- I recall someone a few years down the line who called it the album that saved Slayer from Reign in Blood... With RiB they'd created an 'ultimate' album, one that couldn't be topped, so after that they could have either painted themselves into a corner and gone on trying to make "the next Reign in Blood" again and again, _or_ change course and try to create something different. Which they did, and proved themselves capable of.

Awesome ranking Darcy! I’m shocked you haven’t come across the slayer elitists that demand you agree with them, I’ve known so many in my life! Speaking of which, you need to switch your number 1 and number 3 😉. I think my issue with reign in blood is it just blends together for me if I listen to it start to finish. So seasons takes it for me, like you said that perfect blend of reign and south of heaven. Oh and the intro to bitter peace is one of my favorite intros of all the time. That first minute and a half or so is glorious.

I would say my top 3 are seasons, south, then reign. Many people say reign is their favorite but I after the first few listens I would just listen to angel of death and raining blood. I owed the cassette in high school and I remember the entire album was on both sides so I always had to fast forward and flip the cassette to hear those 2 songs. My life got better when I could afford cds. 😂 great ranking video!

Nice album order. First I ever heard about Slayer was Show No Mercy. Bought the album based on the cover art. This was around the time the album had just came out. Show No Mercy has always been my favorite Slayer album. Love that raw, hungry sound. All those songs kick ass. 2) South Of Heaven 3) Hell Awaits 4) Reign In Blood 5) Seasons in the Abyss, ..are where the others fall for me. I can reach for any of those 5 at random and feel that I got my Slayer fix. Those first five can do no wrong in my book. Cool Video :)

I love those ranking videos, Darcy! Slayer was definetly long overdue. Great Job and quite similar to how I would rank them. My top 3 (point five, hehe) would be: 1. Hell Awaits 1.5 Haunting the Chapel 2. South of Heaven 3. Reign in Blood I had the privilege to see Slayer around 20 times. First time was a gig that was not really announced before on the "Decade of Aggression" tour. Only 500 people showed up and it was the best Slayer show I´ve ever seen!!! Oh, btw. : Those poor cassettes in the background sitting on a loudspeaker.... hopefully they remained unharmed! (Magnet, you know...) Another thing: Have you checked out the new Smith / Kotzen stuff? Wow, I´ve heard three songs and all of them were killer. Always loved Adrian´s voice!

I was introduced to Slayer when a buddy of mine had gotten Live Undead and at first I didn’t get into it but it grew on me. Then I would pick up Hell Awaits and I was hooked. I was disappointed with Reign in Blood at first as it was over before I knew it. I hopped off the Slayer boat after Divine Intervention and I never got back on. You mention doing a W.A.S.P. ranking and I am all aboard for that. I have been wanting to do a video of my own for them.
HELL'o, Darcy! Around the time of South Of Heaven I started to like Slayer thanks to my classmates. Seasons In The Abyss was the first Slayer album that I bought when it was a brand new album. I still have that vinyl and it has a very special place in my heart (if I have one). My TOP3 Slayer albums are: 1. Seasons In Abyss, 2. South Of Heaven, 3. Reign In Blood. My fav Slayer song is Dead Skin Mask. Awesome ranking. Slayer are brill, they will live on forever despite retiring early. I was lucky enough to see them on their farewell tour with Obituary, Anthrax and Lamb of God. Was wicked!! 🤘🤘 I must say you got the best one right. For me reign in blood is the most brutal album ever, the definite creator of Death Metal. I think the issue I have with show no mercy and hell awaits is the production is sooo poor, would be better with a reissue

My top 3 is 1. Show No Mercy 2. Hell Awaits 3. Reign in Blood Pretty chronological and convenient 🤣 I'm a huge NWOBHM fan, and SNM just hits a sweet spot for me. Hell Awaits is a continuation of that style, but adds more of that Slayer personality. Those two (along with Haunting and Live Undead) are the ones I reach for the most so it makes sense that they occupy the top two spots. I'm not saying that the next albums are a step down or anything like that, they're far better written, performed and produced than the first two, but I just don't connect with them in the same way I do with SNM and HA. I love the first 5 albums, the rest is mostly good but not essential.

Interesting to hear your thoughts. They're a pretty solid band and I think the only one of the 4 to stay closest to their roots. Only ones I have are seasons, south, world painted blood and reign. I think that's all I really need. Looking forward to the Motorhead and udo ones whenever you get around to it. 🤘

Haha. Well first of all, I rate World Painted Blood higher at #5, followed by God Hates Us All. But really, you're pretty much spot on. Thing is, there's my favorite list: 1. Show No Mercy 2. South Of Heaven 3. Reign In Blood 4. Hell Awaits 5. Seasons In The Abyss But then there's the list of how historically/musically important Slayer's albums are, and I think that list is: 1. Hell Awaits 2. Reign In Blood 3. South Of Heaven 4. Show No Mercy + Seasons tied.
Although the majority would lean to Reign in Blood for #1, I would probably put Seasons in the Abyss in that slot. I really like the first four Metal Blade releases. I have them on recent re-issues, which have a poster of the album cover in each, which has a portion of the Slayer pentagram on the reverse. Put all four together, you have a huge Slayer banner. Funny thing about Diabolus in Musica, Kerry King hated it. He once said "That's our Turbo"! 🤣 Oh, also have those first four on coloured vinyl. SSSSLLLLAAAAAYYYYYEEEERRRR! 🤘

I agree with you. Reign in Blood is my #1. Perfect metal album from start to finish. Non stop intensity. I'm always surprised when I see lists that don't have it at #1. This album is in my top 5 metal albums of all time. It just has to be. The first time I heard it I didn't know how to handle it. It took me several listens to absorb the impact. The most extreme music I had ever heard at that time. I was never the same after this one.

No filler, pure intensity and top notch production. I would put Seasons at #2, but that one has a couple tracks I tend to skip and the production is not as good.

I only got to see Slayer live the one time, it was the farewell tour and I only made the effort because it would be my one and only time, they've never been a favourite band for me but do enjoy a lot of their stuff. I didn't realise Undisputed Attitude was a punk cover album when I bought it, never clicked that one. Seasons and South Of Heaven would be a straight fight out for #1 for me. Repentless would be high for me but I'm not exactly sure where. I've not heard all of them yet so couldn't rank them myself properly. Always enjoy the 6 strings rankings!
Haunting The Chapel was my first Slayer Record. At the time Slayer had Show No Mercy & Hell Awaits had just came out. I picked Haunting cause it was only $4.99 at Licorice Pizza! Such a great time to be a thrash fan!

I'm watching this again lol And yeah, you can't replace Jeff but Gary was totally the best choice as a replacement and I say "replacement" because he wasn't really a fill-in, he had officially become a member of Slayer. I've always liked Exodus too just as much as Slayer so Gary was perfect and although I never got to see Jeff in concert, I did see Gary and the rest of Slayer in Orlando in 2018 and it was awesome.
Great ranking! I know Decade of Aggression was a live album, but did you like it? When it was 1st released on cassette, it didn't have Skeletons of Society on it! When it was re-released, it had it! I don't like it when bands do that, but sometimes it's not their call! Just wanted to know ur opinion on it?

I got to see them only twice. Touring for Divine Intervention and Gary Holt's first ever Slayer show on the World Painted Blood festival appearance in Australia. To me, quintessential Slayer is a mix between some tracks on Reign... and some on Seasons...

My personal favorite from Slayer is Hell Awaits. Just as raw and thrashy as Show No Mercy, only darker and heavier. It's also the band really finding it's own sound and not wearing their influences on their sleeve nearly as much.

There are two bands which I wish they would have retired after their first double live album. Slayer and Maiden. 5.Hell awaits 4.South of heaven 3.Show no mercy 2.Seasons in the abyss 1.Haunting the chapel The weird thing is I exactly know that I bought Haunting the chapel together with Armored Saint- March of the saint and Dokken- Tooth and nail in a record shop called Duttenhofer here in town. Met a friend on the way to the train station who bought Sodom- In the sign of evil and Kreator- Endless pain. That was a wonderfull evening with this albums and beer. Your brain stores such unimportant things from your past. Looking foreward to your 2 hour long Motorhead ranking,haha. Stay safe!

My number 1 will always be GHUA, partly because it was the album that got me into Slayer, partly because it is by far the heaviest album. You're a bit older than me but it's interesting that you rate the early albums highest (which many fans will) but GHUA comes straight after. Respect 🤘🏻

Hey Darcy! Hope all is well! Slayer is one of my all time favorite bands! So I was really excited to see this ranking!!! I will say that for the most part my ranking of these albums would be practically identical. I guess great minds think alike! Lol... A buddy of mine was a diehard Slayer fan and we used to have a blast talking about there albums. Whenever we were on the topic of best album it seemed like it was always between Seasons in the Abyss and Reign in Blood. To me flip a coin your right either way. We always seemed to conclude that Seasons was their best overall despite our absolute love for Reign in Blood. So I would have to say my only difference would be 1. Seasons and 2. Reign in Blood. Once again fantastic job! Hope you and your family are safe and healthy! As always my friend stay heavy!!!!!🤘🤘

hey Darcy, great ranking! I really enjoy Reign in Blood, but my top 2 would be definitely be SOH, followed by Seasons. Those two resonate with me more than the others in the catalogue. While not at the top end of the list for me, I find Diabolus to be under-appreciated. There are a handful of great songs on there. Cheers

I don't mean to rub it in, but I feel really sorry for you not having seen them live. I've seen them 3 times in Paris France, and they were the best metal concerts I've ever seen ( in French I would say it was " Dantesque" ). And I've seen quite a few bands ( Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Overkill, Sepultura, Exodus, Megadeth, Death, Motorhead....and so on).
My favorite is Seasons, in which I find the drumming fascinating.

For me the top 3 are the same but different order - South of heaven at 1 , Abyss at 2 and Reign at 3. I could be convinced to switch 2 & 3 in there ranking easily any day of the week, I consider them that close. Been lucky that I have seen Slayer 4 times . 2 times with Jeff & 2 times with Gary.

Nice ranking, as always... I agree with you what you said about Seasons in the Abyss, that it blends South... and Reign. I'd say that Seasons is the quintessence of what Slayer did before, so this is my Number One. (but the rest of the first five albums follow right behind). Skeletons of Society is to me a bit like a forgetten gem, I really love that song.
But to be honest: for a ranking of the first five slayer albums you could roll a dice to make up ranking (and you wouldn't even be one short if you include the ep).

I saw them live in 2005,in Warsaw. Small club ,roughly 1000 people but the band gave 100% quality performance.They were GREAT.

Hi Darcy! My top 5 is exactly the same. When Reign..came out, never heard anything like it (after the initially Master of Puppets experience). Like you said; we were even quite “afraid” of them :)
When South..came out I was a little disappointed at first, because it was much slower at times. But over the years I started to love the doomy atmosphere of the album and now its my no 2 also. Seasons also was a grower for me.
I saw them at the awesome Clash of the Titans tour here in Holland in 1990 with Suicidal, Testament and Megadeth. A day I will never forget!

I absolutely agree that Seasons was a blend of RiB and SoH. Hell Awaits is the album where they'd found their sound (and probably my favorite one to this day), Seasons is where their sound reached maturity.
The slowed down touch of South of Heaven -- I recall someone a few years down the line who called it the album that saved Slayer from Reign in Blood... With RiB they'd created an 'ultimate' album, one that couldn't be topped, so after that they could have either painted themselves into a corner and gone on trying to make "the next Reign in Blood" again and again, _or_ change course and try to create something different. Which they did, and proved themselves capable of.

Awesome ranking Darcy! I’m shocked you haven’t come across the slayer elitists that demand you agree with them, I’ve known so many in my life! Speaking of which, you need to switch your number 1 and number 3 😉. I think my issue with reign in blood is it just blends together for me if I listen to it start to finish. So seasons takes it for me, like you said that perfect blend of reign and south of heaven. Oh and the intro to bitter peace is one of my favorite intros of all the time. That first minute and a half or so is glorious.

I would say my top 3 are seasons, south, then reign. Many people say reign is their favorite but I after the first few listens I would just listen to angel of death and raining blood. I owed the cassette in high school and I remember the entire album was on both sides so I always had to fast forward and flip the cassette to hear those 2 songs. My life got better when I could afford cds. 😂 great ranking video!

Great ranking! Slayer is such an epic band that is very difficult to rank, specially the first albums. Agree with you on picking Reign in Blood as your #1 pick... although I’ve always had this debate between Seasons in the abyss and Reign as my #1 one favorite. Hard to choose. Salud amigo🤘🏻

Nice album order. First I ever heard about Slayer was Show No Mercy. Bought the album based on the cover art. This was around the time the album had just came out. Show No Mercy has always been my favorite Slayer album. Love that raw, hungry sound. All those songs kick ass. 2) South Of Heaven 3) Hell Awaits 4) Reign In Blood 5) Seasons in the Abyss, ..are where the others fall for me. I can reach for any of those 5 at random and feel that I got my Slayer fix. Those first five can do no wrong in my book. Cool Video :)

I had the privilege to see Slayer around 20 times. First time was a gig that was not really announced before on the "Decade of Aggression" tour. Only 500 people showed up and it was the best Slayer show I´ve ever seen!!!
Oh, btw. : Those poor cassettes in the background sitting on a loudspeaker.... hopefully they remained unharmed! (Magnet, you know...)
Another thing: Have you checked out the new Smith / Kotzen stuff? Wow, I´ve heard three songs and all of them were killer. Always loved Adrian´s voice!

I was introduced to Slayer when a buddy of mine had gotten Live Undead and at first I didn’t get into it but it grew on me. Then I would pick up Hell Awaits and I was hooked. I was disappointed with Reign in Blood at first as it was over before I knew it. I hopped off the Slayer boat after Divine Intervention and I never got back on.
You mention doing a W.A.S.P. ranking and I am all aboard for that. I have been wanting to do a video of my own for them.

Around the time of South Of Heaven I started to like Slayer thanks to my classmates. Seasons In The Abyss was the first Slayer album that I bought when it was a brand new album. I still have that vinyl and it has a very special place in my heart (if I have one).

I must say you got the best one right. For me reign in blood is the most brutal album ever, the definite creator of Death Metal. I think the issue I have with show no mercy and hell awaits is the production is sooo poor, would be better with a reissue

I'm a huge NWOBHM fan, and SNM just hits a sweet spot for me. Hell Awaits is a continuation of that style, but adds more of that Slayer personality. Those two (along with Haunting and Live Undead) are the ones I reach for the most so it makes sense that they occupy the top two spots. I'm not saying that the next albums are a step down or anything like that, they're far better written, performed and produced than the first two, but I just don't connect with them in the same way I do with SNM and HA. I love the first 5 albums, the rest is mostly good but not essential.

Although the majority would lean to Reign in Blood for #1, I would probably put Seasons in the Abyss in that slot. I really like the first four Metal Blade releases. I have them on recent re-issues, which have a poster of the album cover in each, which has a portion of the Slayer pentagram on the reverse. Put all four together, you have a huge Slayer banner. Funny thing about Diabolus in Musica, Kerry King hated it. He once said "That's our Turbo"! 🤣 Oh, also have those first four on coloured vinyl. SSSSLLLLAAAAAYYYYYEEEERRRR! 🤘

I agree with you. Reign in Blood is my #1. Perfect metal album from start to finish. Non stop intensity. I'm always surprised when I see lists that don't have it at #1. This album is in my top 5 metal albums of all time. It just has to be. The first time I heard it I didn't know how to handle it. It took me several listens to absorb the impact. The most extreme music I had ever heard at that time. I was never the same after this one.

No filler, pure intensity and top notch production. I would put Seasons at #2, but that one has a couple tracks I tend to skip and the production is not as good.

I only got to see Slayer live the one time, it was the farewell tour and I only made the effort because it would be my one and only time, they've never been a favourite band for me but do enjoy a lot of their stuff. I didn't realise Undisputed Attitude was a punk cover album when I bought it, never clicked that one. Seasons and South Of Heaven would be a straight fight out for #1 for me. Repentless would be high for me but I'm not exactly sure where. I've not heard all of them yet so couldn't rank them myself properly. Always enjoy the 6 strings rankings!

Haunting The Chapel was my first Slayer Record. At the time Slayer had Show No Mercy & Hell Awaits had just came out. I picked Haunting cause it was only $4.99 at Licorice Pizza! Such a great time to be a thrash fan!

I'm watching this again lol And yeah, you can't replace Jeff but Gary was totally the best choice as a replacement and I say "replacement" because he wasn't really a fill-in, he had officially become a member of Slayer. I've always liked Exodus too just as much as Slayer so Gary was perfect and although I never got to see Jeff in concert, I did see Gary and the rest of Slayer in Orlando in 2018 and it was awesome.
Great ranking! I know Decade of Aggression was a live album, but did you like it? When it was 1st released on cassette, it didn't have Skeletons of Society on it! When it was re-released, it had it! I don't like it when bands do that, but sometimes it's not their call! Just wanted to know ur opinion on it?

My personal favorite from Slayer is Hell Awaits. Just as raw and thrashy as Show No Mercy, only darker and heavier. It's also the band really finding it's own sound and not wearing their influences on their sleeve nearly as much.

The weird thing is I exactly know that I bought Haunting the chapel together with Armored Saint- March of the saint and Dokken- Tooth and nail in a record shop called Duttenhofer here in town. Met a friend on the way to the train station who bought Sodom- In the sign of evil and Kreator- Endless pain. That was a wonderfull evening with this albums and beer. Your brain stores such unimportant things from your past. Looking foreward to your 2 hour long Motorhead ranking,haha. Stay safe!

Slayer is my 2nd favorite band, after Black Sabbath. 1988, 1988, 1991, 1995, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 was the years I saw them live. My Top 5 album list is: Reign in Blood, Hell Awaits, Show No Mercy, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss. I own 15 Slayer shirts, and two tour programs 1991, 1995. Have numerous patches. 🤘🎸💀😈
