My dad bought one of these new in 97. Came with the black monitor with speakers too. I remember for a long time the only DVD we had was the promo DVD that came with this computer. I remember it had an Eric Clapton song from a concert on it. Was awesome for its time. Thank you for showing this one off I'm so nostalgic over these Compaq spaceship PCs now
Thank you so much for the reply I am so glad it can bring some good memories for you! A DVD player in my compaq was the first way I ever watched DVD movies to, I can still remember watching "The Cell" with Jennifer Lopez on the FX700 monitor and admiring how advanced this was to do!
I am amped to hear that! I also lived and loved Compaqs I was shocked when my 25 year old friend came over and was like "Whats a compaq!?" he now knows way to much lol! Thank you for the comment!
I n 1997 I was a teenager in an East European country, so I could only see those machines in magazines and dream about them. I was happy to have an Amiga 500 in those days.
Ahhhh thats crazy I know they where not sold every where also and where incredibly expensive, we had a lower end IBM aptiva which is why Im so happy after all these years I could get this even if its 20 years old now! Thank you for the comment!
I actually have a video coming out today about the 4824 the white one! I played flight simulator 2000 on it and remember being so amped to play it! Thank you for the comment!
bought the 4550 in 1997 working in the software industry as online dial up was just coming in for the consumer. late to the game in my mid 30,s it was my first PC purchase for home to complement my slow 385 work PC. Unit came in a box with monitor and two passive speakers and a startup disk at about 1800.00. The company discount cut my price in half. Running windows 95 in those days everything was plug and play. Compaq and Dell the to major server companies where moving into the home PC market at the time while HP was still making flatbed scanners. when something went wrong or there was a fatal crash you just popped the OS startup disk in and start from scratch. Not a bad unit for its time
That must have been so different to use one for work, and then to be able to enjoy it having drivers and not popping a cd in for anything and everything that you got extra for a system. Dell and Compaq had many servers and I was surprised how much business stuff they made. It was for sure a thing if you had a scanner it was a flat bed and an HP and more then likely an HP deskjet printer in witch you'd put the paper in the wrong way because it sucked it in and printed stuff upside down!
One of the very few black Compaqs of the time. I have a Compaq Presario 2200, which is also black, but in a desktop format instead of a tower. Definitely much more eye-catching than the typical beige boxes of the time.
I 1000% percent agree! I have had my eye on a 2200 for the longest time! I need to pull the trigger when one comes on ebay clean but not asking some crazy amount (like $2000) I agree they are very different even designed different the even the beige compaq desktops then also, the 2200 was a true unicorn! Do you have the matching monitor? Do you use it for vintage games or anything?
First PC I ever had. I remember that Eric Clapton video/song that was mentioned by the other guy too. Ours also came with a PC game called "Virtual On: Cyber Troopers". Blew my mind as a kid as my exposure to computers at the time was the older IBMs at the school computer lab running Word and Number Munchers.
I remember word and number munchers fondly. I have been waiting to find a restore PC or a similar compaq unit with an original hard drive so I can actually see what was on it, I will have to see if I can find that Cyber Troopers game to load onto the PC! Thank you for watching!
Hey Im over hear learning something new every day! I love that riser tbh even thought it wasn't "atx" I didn't know there was a NLX standard! Im looking it up now to learn more! Thank you for that!
They where absolutely a monster back in the day! I am lovingly keeping this one original and going to sleeper PC one I have with a bad main board! Stay tuned!
My next video will infact be of the unit running with the vintage software that came on it! It will be in 2 weeks! Today I am doing my 4824 which I will have starting but not booting into the OS as It didnt have a drive.
HELLO!! Curious if it's possible to add a new graphics card with VGA where the slots are? If so, what graphics/video card? I am not getting any visual on my monitor. THANK YOU! I have the 4860 by the way. You're the only video ive found with in depth information i'm looking for.
I have added one to a past unit! I will say it’s picky about it but the one I used was a nvdia card I will have to look back and see what it was I have pictures of it stashed some where but it’s totally do able, it also requires you enable pci vga snoop in the bios!
I also love this model. I had the 4880 in 97 but it was lost. Now I have the 4862. Here is the problem though. The power supply is dead now and I am now desperate in finding a new proprietary power supply. Some are listed online but so far no one actually has one to sell. Please, where are you getting power supplies for the 4800 series models?
The power supply I robbed out of my other unit, luckily there are a few online that get you the same power supply. The 4700 series uses the same one as well (with the right cable lengths) Ill try to find you some ebay links to units that work
@@nickdoestechstuffMan I absolutely love you have been keeping these machines going. They are so unique and getting to the extremely rare levels it seems sadly. I appreciate any help you may have on a new PSU as I said on my other comment as well. Thank you for the tips as well on searching.
Oh course I want people to be able to love these things and keep them alive as long as possible some people are just now getting to that age where these where a happy memory and I am all for making sure people keep that memory alive!
I blame it a lot on Dell becoming big in the business game and many people I think used to dells at work ended up with dells at home, plus their huge marketing push. We all knew Steve “dude you gotta get a Dell” and hello I’m a Mac, HP had the printers locked down, Compaq started becoming the small player they never advertised to the public imo. That and their corp structure went all to hell with some buy outs. I wanna do a video about Compaqs history actually
Yeah it was so Odd I am pretty sure atleast at the time short of apples with an optional card on the 6400 and 5500 these where the only PCs to natively have RCA back in 97/98 when they came out, Id love to try to play a playstation on it if I can find the right software.

These compaqs defined my childhood and I can’t even explain lol
I am amped to hear that! I also lived and loved Compaqs I was shocked when my 25 year old friend came over and was like "Whats a compaq!?" he now knows way to much lol! Thank you for the comment!

Looks like the Net Yaroze of Presarios. Stunning.
Yes very much so like a dev kit but is a real thing! Thank you so much for the comment and watching!
My friend had that white one, with all the buttons on top.. I was 12 and remember playing flightsim on it. 😁

the compaq evolution continues!!
It cant stop and wont stop bro! Thank you for being such a fire editor!

so many quirks and features!
Thank you! Yes they are oddly well equipped for such a an old machine!
The motherboard and riser in this Compaq will probably conform to the NLX standard (PII/PIII era) the older Compaq's used the LPX standard.
Hey Im over hear learning something new every day! I love that riser tbh even thought it wasn't "atx" I didn't know there was a NLX standard! Im looking it up now to learn more! Thank you for that!
Holy crap... I had one of those beasts.

love to have one with windows me installed
That’s an interesting idea, more stable than 98 but still works with all the stuff! That may be an ideal OS!

@nickdoestechstuff Heck yeah and thank you for doing what you are doing. Nice to know I am not the only one who loves these models.
my quantum bigfoot tx 5.25 hhd is 2.998 gb
The stock one in these was from 4gb to 12gb or 16gb I have to find one of mine still had it, nothing makes noises like they do
I really dont know what happen with Compaq, for in end of 90's and begin of 2000's dominated the world, and in the end of 2000's we dont see any...

RCA!? NO WAY!
