As a long-time fan of this game and somebody who has spoken to and interviewed Tomomi Sakai myself, I felt like correcting a few things here. 2:11 That's Takahashi Meijin. Tomomi Sakai has not publicly shown his face 2:36 Gimmick was not received well at release. Most gaming publications gave it middling to negative scores and when Sakai showed off the game at the Tokyo Toy Show, most people would lose interest and walk away when they learned it was a Famicom game. 5:26 The girl is actually unnamed. The name Mary was only included in the PAL release, which Sakai had nothing to do with.
Thanks for the clarification! I heard about the girl's name beforehand (I just went with Mary because I thought would've been better than just calling her 'the girl'), but the other 2 were little mistakes on my part.
YESSSSS Gimmick! Is suuuuuuch a gem!!!!! So glad to see attention be given to it! Did you know that inside the pirate ship, if you plug a second controller, you can play as one of the enemies? You can move and jump freely but can't leave the room, it's such a obscure and charming little feature!
I don’t know if you’ll see this comment, but there’s some fun little things in this game that you probably didn’t notice, courtesy of this game’s biggest adoring fan❤️❤️: •The black blob enemies you see throughout the game actively change up their attacks and even technology, to stop you. They go from running at you, to using magic attack, to flying around, to using hats to take two hits instead of one, to using spears and arrows, and then to using welding masks that flip them on their side letting them take an extra hit, and machines (the cat blobs could be considered the main villains personal baddies) •The flying beetles in stage 3’s underground area are actually not just flying without direction. If you jump on one of them, you can see that they actually fly into the hole of the tree in the beginning of the underground area. •the seagulls noises in stage 2 are put in one of the extra channels used for the games special sound chip (which is why it sounds so incredible), which makes it that it never interrupts the music which is something common in nes games. •the game has one unused song in the sound test (Strange Memories of Death). •the game has the best use of Sunsofts famous bass sample used in games like Journey to Silius (RAF World), Hebereke, and Gremlins 2 NES. •If you really need some more gimmick to play to go with your Kirby fixation, the game has a spiritual sequel for the gameboy called Trip World, that was officially released on Switch and other platforms, that has similar lovely character designs and fun level design and Gimmick esque quirks. •in the first stage, if you jump over the first black blob enemy for a few minutes, he’ll stop and blink at you, then his head will create a propeller and charge at you. •in the snow portion of stage 6, you can actually play fetch with the dog enemy and it’ll wag its tail when you generate a star. •if you push two item potions together when you have a full inventory, you can create an extra life. •there’s an enemy in stage 5 that will try to attack you with missiles and when his attacks fail, he’ll try to jump across the platform and fail, then he’ll look back at you and then desperately jump into the water behind you. •the game has a hidden score multiplier system. If you get 4 or 5 enemies in a row, the points will stack and grant you an extra life very quickly early game. The multiplier also applies to things like blowing up the backup missiles in the lever area of stage 5, with a bomb attack, or blowing up the leftover sword after the stage 2 boss. •if you think about it, the final boss’s weird out of place appearance can honestly be explained by him being a power ranger type action figure. Kinda poetic that the final boss would be a “boys toy” when you spend the game fighting plush dolls. •the game makes great use of advanced programming techniques. Like the multiple scrolling sprites of the fish in the stage 1 underwater transition area. •The final boss will actually kick relative to your size which honestly is a cute and goofy detail because he’ll do all these little magic and sword attacks, and then do these goofy shin kicks to Yumetaro. •If you jump on the Togezo type enemy when you flip it over, its kicking feet will actually move you forward. •There’s a little black bug on the wall of the castle entrance in stage 7 that if the game detects a pirated copy of the game, will crash the game and show a black screen with the words “BLACK HOLE”. •The world map is shaped like a heart❤️ There’s probably more I can add but it’s honestly always a joy to share my love for this game with others and I hope this video helps make more fans of the game and maybe it’s spiritual sequel Trip World❤️
Deadass just found out about this game, and WHOA the anti piracy thing is real!! :o But how does it even work, from a more technical point of view? Wouldn't the console just not detect the 10NES chip in the pirated cartridge and never start?
Yep! I've sent the announcement and everything! I'm pretty surprised seeing Gimmick come back like that after all this time but I'm really excited to see what the sequel will have in store!
this and Kirby's Adventure have some of the best animation on the console

This games looks like it's on Kirby's adventure tier. I'll give it a shot.

True, Gimmick! Is so underrated! Also, I had no idea about that playable enemy secret, guess that's another little reason to love the pirate ship!
Ok this alone is pretty much enough to make this my new favorite NES game
This game deadass feels like a 2009 retro revival XBLA game, it feels like Cave Story, Mega Man 9 and Fez
Gimmick? Awesome. Just like this video!
(Also thank you for the Super Mario 2 appreciation near the end!)
