    Commentary here by Harold Abrahams, himself an Olympic champion in 1924 (100 metres) as depicted in the film 'Chariots of Fire'.

    God defend New Zealand. Great country. Great in Rugby. Great in cricket. World contenders in spite of a small population. Good shearers, too. I’m Irish BTW.

    Perfect tactical race from Lovelock, and one of the great pieces of sports commentary from Abrahams.

    • @peterdelmonte9832
      @peterdelmonte9832 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the commentary is terrible! Check the position he says Lovelock is in…fifth when he’s ninth, fifth when he’s third! Given the colour of his kiwi kit, it shouldn’t have been that difficult. And he might as well have shouted, “Come on Jack, don’t let any of those foreigners beat you”.
      It is of its’ time though and a valuable piece of history. Plus it shows what a glorious runner lovelock was: seemingly effortless and so brave to break so early in an Olympic final.

      @@peterdelmonte9832Nah, Abrahams commentary is sublime. If there’s any discrepancies between the vocal and the footage it will be because of the technology of the time not because he couldn’t see what was going on.
      As for the obvious bias, you have to remember that it’s Berlin 1936 & Harold Abrahams is Jewish and he and Lovelock were friends. Abrahams had been involved in discussions about whether the ‘36 Games should be boycotted, he argued it would do more harm than good. He reportedly sat close to Hitler at one point & later commented ‘I wish I’d shot him’. He and his wife fostered Jewish children from Germany & Austria who’d escaped the Nazis. Given the circumstances it’s hardly surprising he was excited for his friend to win.

    Many years since I last watched this video and my goodness how beautiful did LOVELOCK run his race, BLACK MAGIC in a ARIAN run competition where I imagine Hitler would not of been very happy nor his country men. Off course Hitler had to sit & actually watch a Famous Black man, Herb Elliott win a Olympic Gold -The Commentator is just wonderful too so colourful is his description of this famous Runner / race. I love these old videos' beautiful memories.

      You're pathetic. I suppose when your football team is such a failure you have to cast about for someone else's glory to steal. Jack was born and bred in NZ. It seems to have escaped your notice, but his parents chose to leave England. Smart people.
