At 6:56, the young woman who was almost killed in a plane crash 5 years earlier, Betty Robinson running in white in lane 3 for the U.S. Helen Stephens, the world record holder running the anchor leg, was a bit hesitant to start moving as Robinson approached her. Stephens was fast, but she wouldn't have caught the Germans if they hadn't dropped the baton.
It's not the nazi salute, it's the olympic salute the way it was implemented in 1896 by Coubertin and Vikelas. France and Grece, the two founding members of the modern olympics has been performing it in each olympiad from 1896 to 1936. After WWII the salute was dismissed, due to evident reasons...
@@MoreAwsomeMetal I recently watched, on TH-cam, some East German television coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the 1972 Olympics in Munich, timing it to exactly fifty years after the event, just out of curiosity to see what the East German commentator made of the entrances of the various countries and in the process noticed that the Bolivian competitors gave what appeared to be the Nazi salute to the crowd. I note that, the preceding year, a Far-Right military dictatorship under Hugo Banzer had seized power in a coup d'état, appointing none other than Klaus Barbie as 'Special Advisor', so I was wondering if they may have been implying that Adolf Hitler was still 'der Führer' of Germany to them. Could they have got away with saying that it was really the Olympic salute they were giving? Thinking of Jesse Owens it was also notable that the commentator made reference to the oppression of the Blacks in America in contrast with how much was owed to them by their country in respect of athletic achievement. Yes, East Germany was a quite odious dictatorship itself, but at least there was a sort of recognition that racism was wrong. The entrance of the Israeli competitors was greeted with a stony silence, however, which was probably very different from how the greeting from a West German commentator might have been, the West Germans being acutely aware of making up for past errors. But at that time, of course, East Germany would have been on the side of the Palestinians' 'revolutionary struggle' against U.S.-backed Israel. It was still at a time when insurgencies in the Middle East and Western Asia were more about Marxist-Leninism than Jihadism, which was rather less friendly towards the former Soviet Bloc, as illustrated by Afghanistan.
"The girls proved they were genuine women by bursting into tears on the field."
Ah, the 30s.
Ahh thats not how i interpreted it. More like they were genuine athletes (who wanted to win so bad). I think it could work for men aswell :D
What a wonderful traditional time. Now we live in the Madness of Modernity.
Our people son kee-chung won the game but he couldn't raise his flag 🇰🇷🇰🇷

When Germany and soviet union were friends and decided to start a war together
Jesse Owens won 4 of the 9 gold medals for America.
You're speaking of just track and field, right?
@Achim Wurst Considering this was hosted by Nazi Germany in their homeland, it isn't surprising.
I’ve been looking for film of weightlifting great great grandpa was weightlifting for Germany
Our sportsmen/women now take the knee instead of the Nazi salute
